Can you smell heat/cold?

I don't really have a sense of smell at all, but my dc just came in and said "it smells warm in here", I questioned further and apparently hot and cold have distinctive smells?

Is this a thing? Can people smell temperature, or is my dc weird?

I've got a impaired sense of smell due to a neurological disorder.

I can't smell of the tea is burning (I have very sensitive dc and a well used alarm on my phone) but I can smell hot and cold. No idea how!!

I can smell some of these on here but not all. For instance, the radiators being on...yes, I can definitely smell that.
And I know when it's going to rain, I can smell that too.
Hot and cold not so much; I mean, a hot room often smells "stuffy" but I think that's different.
But I can certainly smell if someone's getting a cold, I can smell illness. Weird.

Toddlerteaplease · 29/04/2023 07:13

@Lemondrizzlerain yes it does taste different!

sashh · 29/04/2023 07:19

Hot and cold water sound different too.

MyLavenderSuperpowers · 29/04/2023 07:53

cherrypied · 29/04/2023 07:55

I a smell all these smells! Hot cold spring summer autumn winter high humidity low humidity air and water

CaptainSeven · 29/04/2023 11:36

Yes I can. I can hear electricity too and taste when hot water has either been boiled too often or kept hot in an urn for too long.

I hate the taste.

TheSnowyOwl · 29/04/2023 11:37

Yes, I can. I always assumed it was a sensory trait but maybe it’s fairly normal.

I think with most things I have an average sense of smell, but I can smell heat and distinguish between different types - smell of heat when disembark from a plane in a hot country is different to smell of heat coming from a hot tap, ironing, smell before a tropical thunderstorm.

I can smell all sorts of odd things, like wasps. I can also smell hot and cold.
I can smell illness too
There is a link between super smellers and morning sickness apparently, I first heard about it on here

That's interesting. I'm a smeller of cold/hot and love the smell of outside. Morning sickness for both mine lasted over 20 weeks to start with and then came back at about 28 weeks and continued more or less until the end.

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 29/04/2023 12:27

I'd never thought about this but you're right! I assume it's because my sinuses react to different temperatures and open up more in the warm. The cold actually hurts them.

I can smell when it's going to rain...

AxolotlOnions · 29/04/2023 13:04

I can smell a cold snap. And as an aside, when a pineapple is ripe it smells like static electricity.
