Can you smell heat/cold?

I don't really have a sense of smell at all, but my dc just came in and said "it smells warm in here", I questioned further and apparently hot and cold have distinctive smells?

Is this a thing? Can people smell temperature, or is my dc weird?

Yes, I can. I've also woken up and told OH I can smell snow and yes, it's either snowed or about to.

Hoppinggreen · 28/04/2023 16:54

I can smell all sorts of odd things, like wasps. I can also smell hot and cold.
I can smell illness too
There is a link between super smellers and morning sickness apparently, I first heard about it on here

GreyCarpet · 28/04/2023 13:09

Yes. I can smell when it's going to snow and I can smell when the seasons have changed too. I go by that rather than dates tbh.

I do too. And I can smell when it's going to rain, and I feel a bit sick just before a thunderstorm.

What do wasps smell like?

Is it like a waft of perfume, but instead of thinking "oh someone's wearing Alien" you think "there's a wasp nearby".

I'm struggling to get my head around everyone smelling stuff all the time, I live in a largely unscented world, I only smell really strong smells.

Everything smells and has a taste. I'm neurodivergent and have a very very very very very sensitive snoot. There's food shops I won't buy deli items from being I can taste the cleaning products used on surfaces, on the food. Heat and cold have smells.

Mistymoonsinastarrysky · 28/04/2023 19:27

Yes, heat, cold, rain, snow - I can ‘taste’ snow before it falls, metallic tang in the air.
I can smell thunderstorms too.

givemecoffeenow · 28/04/2023 19:27

Yes

Spendonsend · 28/04/2023 19:40

Yes. I can smell hot, cold, that its about to rain, snow and wasps.

Can often hear electricty as well.

IDontWantToBeAPie · 28/04/2023 19:42

Well I can smell central heating or warm paper/warm people and I can smell coldness (snow, rain, air con).

But they're the cause/effect not the actual thing.

Wasps smell a bit acidic , ants do too but slightly different
Its not always nice being able to smell so much though

noodlezoodle · 28/04/2023 22:22

Yep. I can smell water too, if there's a pond or a lake ahead.

LeefPeeper · 28/04/2023 22:32

Yes, and I can also smell wet metal but not dry metal

jmh740 · 28/04/2023 22:44

I can smell when the heating is on and yes hot a d cold smell different to me too

DeadbeatYoda · 28/04/2023 22:51

Hot is a round smell, cold smells spiky.

DaenerysD · 28/04/2023 22:57

Good to know I'm not alone being able to smell stuff like this

Treasureboxkey · 28/04/2023 22:57

Yes. There's almost a change in gow thickness in the air too.
Cold is thin and metallic.
Hot has more body to it.

Treasureboxkey · 28/04/2023 22:57

The

DramaAlpaca · 28/04/2023 23:01

Yes I can

33goingon64 · 28/04/2023 23:01

I wonder if we're smelling things that are warm/cold rather than hot/cold per se. Like a room heated by a radiator probably smells of warm dust or warm carpet. And anything icy probably smells of water, I.e. minerals and ions in the atmosphere or something (probably not using the right term).

Linnet · 28/04/2023 23:04

I can smell cold weather, if someone comes in from outside in winter you can smell the cold on them. I once said this to my old boss and he didn't believe me.

I can also smell when it's hot. I think that might be the humidity. When it starts getting warmer I can smell the change in seasons and the same when it starts getting cooler.

I agree with the poster further up who mentioned it smelling autumnal the other day, I notice days like that too.

And if the heating is on I can smell that too.

JewelTheft · 28/04/2023 23:05

My dh runs, and when he gets home after a run in cold weather there is a definite fresh smell around him, and it's not a smell of him, it's the smell of the cold weather on him, from him having been outside for a long time in the cold, iyswim? Not sure that makes sense now I've written it down 😂

MrsSkylerWhite · 28/04/2023 23:07

Yes, absolutely . Hot and cold water sound different too.

Prettybubblesintheair · 28/04/2023 23:07

Yes! I’m so glad I’ve read this as every time I say to anyone it smells hot/chilly they look at me like I’m mad. I can smell hot and cold air and water and I can smell when it’s going to rain. I can smell central heating before I can feel it working.

TellerTuesday · 28/04/2023 23:19

I've always been able to smell the cold but I can't smell when it's hot. That probably makes me even weirder

Treasureboxkey · 28/04/2023 23:25

Yes. I thought that I'd boiled the kettle earlier but realised that I'd not actually put it on as soon as it hit the cup.
Just from the sound.
