Somebody on another thread mentioned millennium Eve and it got me wondering what everybody was doing on Millennium Eve? And also what fun outfits were you wearing you would cringe at now?

I was only 13, my family doesn't celebrate new years eve as we had a very sad loss and it brings back memories so we were home doing not much really I was messing around on the internet I really wanted to turn the computer off but Kyle from the year above was talking at me on MSN!

I was 27 and allegedly on call for Y2K issues (triple time wages!) but my team and I had spent like a year sorting any potential issues. So to celebrate we all went clubbing together in London and got super drunk. Just as well we’d done a good job or it would have been awkward 😂😂

It was the first new year after I met my now DH. We had a row because he wanted to spend it with his mum and dad (should have known- he was 30 at the time)! We went to a party at my cousins house in the end and my DH had to keep his laptop on all night and couldn't drink as he was on call in case the millenium bug made systems crash!

troppibambini6 · 21/04/2023 12:02

I was at a house party with my ex. He battered me sensless when we got home because I had spoke to a group of his friends.

BooperKisses · 21/04/2023 12:08

Danced with DH in the street along with the neighbours… DS slept through it all - he was 14 and slept through most things if I’m honest!😁

gogohmm · 21/04/2023 12:09

Not a lot, young baby. The main city celebrations we were going to had been cancelled due to a terrorism plot being uncovered days before.

BooperKisses · 21/04/2023 12:10

@troppibambini6

Thats awful, I’m so sorry and hope your life improved over the years💐

We spent it at Magic Kingdom at Disney World in florida. We only decided to go 2 weeks before when I saw how low the prices were for fly drive. £89 each Inc car hire. Got a private villa for £600 for the 2 weeks so cost us less than 1k for 4 of us.
It was magic

I was living in London but was home visiting my family in Dublin. We'd had a terrible year, (infertility) I was optimistic about 2000 as we were about to start IVF and I really wanted the year to be over.
Nothing was going on in Dublin because all hospitatilty staff wanted to be paid too much for working so in the end nowhere opened. There was a fireworks display so we went to the seafront and watched the fireworks.
I literally felt a weight lifted as 1999 ended. LOL Little did I know that things were about to get a lot worse.

I had just turned 14. I went to the city center with my family and one of my friends. My parents let us have one cup of sparkling wine. My parent‘s creepy older friend gave us more in exchange for kisses on the lips.

It wasa surprisingly long time before I realised how bad that was!!

reluctantbrit · 21/04/2023 12:57

Last NYE in Germany so we had friends over for food and drinks as we were moving a couple of weeks later.

DH and I decided that we are getting married, no big proposal, just a mutual agreement :-) because it was practical with us living in a different country later.

I also worked for a retail bank and was one of the few living local and was "chosen" to come in at 11am and see if our computers still work as everyone was terrified of the Y2K bug.
Yes, all worked and my boss brought several bottles of sparkling wine to make up getting us all in early.

Objectionhearsayspeculation · 21/04/2023 12:58

I was just shy of 18 and we were all in our last year of school and doing our A levels. We (my 3 closest friends and I) went to my best friends family's bar and got very drunk on Bacardi breezers played the best music on the dukebox and had the best night. I got off with a slightly older guy I had liked for ages and wish I had ended up with instead of the arsehole I ended up going out with down the line. It was one of those nights I'll always remember fondly

TheReverendBeeb · 21/04/2023 13:06

Another one here who went into the West End to watch the fireworks.

Couldn't get remotely close to the river and my abiding memory of midnight is watching men pissing up the walls at Charing cross station.

Then had to walk miles for a tube station that was open and finally got home (Balham) around 4 am. Still had our bottle of Champagne in DH's rucksack.

Couldn't be arsed to drink it and went to bed.

Absolutely crap night for the reasons above- but can still remember it to this day 🤣

Slimjimtobe · 21/04/2023 13:09

I remember it well. I was in the middle of my PGCE and home from university. I was a a party at a hotel at the time with a friend from university and was wearing a black skirt and black vest top as I was permanently skint and wore some combination of black for years 🤭

Gazelda · 21/04/2023 13:10

I was 32 and single. Didn't get invited to any parties, didn't have anyone to spend the evening with.

I stayed at home on the sofa. I've never felt so lonely or unlovable.

troppibambini6 · 21/04/2023 13:22

@BooperKisses thank you x
And yes life is much better now thank you although it took me 5 more years to pluck up the courage to run!.....

ImAvingOops · 21/04/2023 13:32

I was pregnant with DS2, so stayed home. Had friends over for a bit, who were on their way out. Then just watched fireworks on the garden with DH and DS1.

Falifornia · 21/04/2023 13:36

It was our turn to host NY with our usual crowd of mates. I was 6 months pregnant, stone cold sober and the only one compos mentis enough to celebrate that the world hadn't imploded at midnight. At the time, I worked for a blue chip company with safety critical operations; I dread to think how much was spent on Y2K planning/mitigations . . . . . .

Kyse · 21/04/2023 13:51

I was 16 and babysitting - made a lot of money!

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 21/04/2023 13:59

There was a family funeral that morning. DH went, I stayed home with the children and I felt really down. In the evening there were fireworks and a big civic service in town. DH went with my parents and the three older children and DS who was 11 at the time was playing in the band at the church. I stayed home with youngest DC.

After the fireworks all the family came home to our house, parents, cousins, a couple of friends, and we had a buffet and finally went to bed around 5.00 a.m. It was a really strange day/evening.

BringMeTea · 21/04/2023 14:00

In a ski lodge in Maine USA. It was utter shit for various reasons. The stars at night were the best bit.

x2boys · 21/04/2023 14:05

At my sister's house ,party she had just started living with her now ex,dh,as I recall local.pubs and clubs were wanting to charge ridiculous entry fee,s so a,lot of people kicked back and had their own parties instead ,I think most local.pubs were forced,to.close at around 8pm, it was all but if a let down really ,it was over hyped.

SootysCaravan · 21/04/2023 14:22

12 and at a house part of my parents friends. Double denim with a suede spaghetti top, suede lace ups down either trouser leg and a pair of cork wedges.
Reckoned I was the business with my hair glitter and a solitary Bacardi Breezer in hand 🥲

Musicaltheatremum · 21/04/2023 14:25

My husband was admitted with a grand mal seizure and diagnosed with a brain tumour that day. Died 12 years later. I had a 4&6 year old at the time. The only great thing was the hospital carpark was easy to park in for those 5 days holiday.

Sunseeker100 · 21/04/2023 14:31

I was 20 and working in a city centre bar all day and night! My nighttime outfit was silver and tight and had shorts I think. Was also pretty drunk as the night wore on 🤣

I'm definitely a very long way from wearing outfits like that and my idea of a perfect night now is eating a takeaway in pjs!

AdoraBell · 21/04/2023 14:34

We went to London for the fireworks so I wore warm clothes. We ended up on the roof of a low building by the bank of the Thames and had a perfect view.
