Thread 7 - TalkLair: “In fact it’s an oblate spheroid”

Continuation of previous threads (thread 6).
The new lair of JTT escapees is all cosy and homey; we have truly settled here. Outside, the garden is blooming with spring flowers. Inside, the hearth is glowing, pictures are up on the walls, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

Happy Birthday, Kasper, have a splendid day and I hope you're being spoiled rotten!

SinnerBoy · 23/04/2023 16:05

Kaspar is a bonny puss, it must be said.

Kucinghitam · 23/04/2023 16:23

Happy birthday Kasper!

Did everyone get their emergency alerts?

We were in a restaurant in town. My phone went off 1 minute early with the ungodly shrieking, which caused some weird looks from others. Then everyone else's started. It was quite cool looking out the window and seeing people stopping suddenly and staring at their phones.

Except DH - he still hasn't had the alert. I wonder if it's network by network. If there's ever a real emergency, I imagine part of the population running around screaming whilst others are just sitting there looking puzzled.

I've seen that a lot of people didn't get the alert. Wonder what happened there?

SinnerBoy · 23/04/2023 16:40

Neither me or my daughter got them. I don't know about my wife, she hasn't mentioned it. She was home, whilst I took our girl out to spend her birthday money.

Gonners · 23/04/2023 16:45

I got mine bang on the dot of 3. MrG didn't get one, but that's not surprising as his phone is ancient and 3G.

At least they warned us this time. About 18 months back, I got a test alert when they were checking a new mast. I was standing in the queue for 'flu jabs at the GP's surgery and mine was the only phone that shrieked. There was much tutting.

Kucinghitam · 23/04/2023 17:01

I see from the threads on here that people on Three didn't get it. Which would explain why DH and DDs will be the zombie fodder in the apocalypse.

I think ours are too. They're Nokia dumb phones so we didn't expect an alert.

Tricyrtis2022 · 23/04/2023 17:14

OH informs me that our phones are actually 2G 😅

MmePoppySeedDefage · 23/04/2023 17:21

Squeaky would you mind posting a link to the Vermeer hi-res files please as I didn't get the link? I can send to my son and his friend who are coming with us.

My phone shrieked twice, once at 14:59, then again at 15:00. It must have been funny being in a big place, seeing other people reacting.

SqueakyDinosaur · 23/04/2023 18:07

And @artant , I don't understand really why they didn't just ban photography - the lighting was low because the pictures are fragile, and of course you get the occasional moron who's using flash...

StrawberrySquash · 23/04/2023 18:46

I can't actually get in and see the textures of the fabrics etc in those photos

artant · 23/04/2023 19:42

I got the alert at 14:59. Good to have a head start.

My brother has an antiquated phone (as does my mum but her phones tend to die of neglect anyway) so will be zombie fodder.

weaseleyes · 23/04/2023 19:53

Happy birthday, Kasper!

CyanCrystalViolet · 23/04/2023 20:18

Kasper is snoozing next to me after chasing a rabbit on a string, bunnykicking a catnip cigar and dining on a special birthday meal.

I also received my alert at 14:59, it gave me quite a fright and I almost dropped my phone.

Gonners · 23/04/2023 20:54

Poor Kasper - it must be so exhausting being a cat.

MavisMcMinty · 23/04/2023 21:31

Got this link from JTT, and it’s wonderful, with a couple of Vermeer paintings in the (hundreds of) replies too.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 23/04/2023 23:46

Sounds an ideal birthday for Kasper.

I got the alert at exactly the same time the shredder I was using jammed. Took me a while to work out it wasn't just a 'sort out the stuck thing' noise.

MouseMinge · 24/04/2023 00:22

Thanks for the link, @SqueakyDinosaur ! Thanks for the Twitter link, @MavisMcMinty ! And happy birthday, Kasper, you absolute darling!

MouseMinge · 24/04/2023 00:24

I had a shit night's sleep so kept having naps. My alert may or may not have happened but I imagine that if it had gone off I'd at least have been startled out of my nap. So, yeah, if we'd gone into full on nuclear shit today there's a chance I'd have just gone on and died in my sleep.

SinnerBoy · 24/04/2023 08:33

My pear tree has blossomed this year, I noticed last night! I'm happy, it didn't trouble itself last year.

angelico53 · 24/04/2023 10:06

I note some quite convoluted thinking at the old place today, but in general I'd have to say the discussions are .. ok-ish. That is to say, they are fairly polite and perhaps less constrained than before, though going over a lot of old ground with newer posters.

Have things changed? Maybe a little in that very small group - but I'd like to see a thread on Queer Theory welcomed, and an honest recognition that "trans" is not a homogenous category and some discussion of what that means.

bignosebignose · 24/04/2023 10:27

Mrs BN and I both got the alarm yesterday - both on EE. The kids didn't - both on Sky.

Hmm. That is interesting. Perhaps a teeny bit of recognition that The Happening wasn't the prettiest sight to see?

Still, however much I wish them well, I'm done with them.

Here, we have pictures!

Our local bluebell woods just starting to bloom. If the weather warms back up to a proper temperature, I'm expecting they will be looking spectacular by next weekend.
