Thread 7 - TalkLair: “In fact it’s an oblate spheroid”

Kucinghitam · 20/04/2023 20:05

Continuation of previous threads (thread 6).
The new lair of JTT escapees is all cosy and homey; we have truly settled here. Outside, the garden is blooming with spring flowers. Inside, the hearth is glowing, pictures are up on the walls, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

In other news, the bathroom saga rumbles on. It's basically been all finished and been in use for a week, apart from waiting for the electricians to change the light, fit the extractor fan, and wire up the radiator heating element.

Well, today the electricians turned up. And they've spent the past 2 hours crawling amongst the loft insulation struggling with the wiring. Apparently previous owner Artistic Lydia was as cavalier with electricity as she had been with plumbing/heating/maintenance.

Nightmarish as the whole saga must have been (indeed must still be), finding out that some of the wiring is dodgy is a blessing in disguise. Artistic Lydia has been prevented from burning you all in your beds.

I love the bluebell wood - it's perishing cold here and Spring is at least two weeks behind usual schedule, but the good thing about that is that all the flowers are having a longer season. I must go and pick a little bunch of primroses to go in my primrose-yellow Czechoslovakian china coffee cup, (bought in a charity shop specifically for primroses, some years it only gets used once, this will be bunch four for 2023).

Medee · 24/04/2023 11:13

A charity shop specifically for primroses? Niche!

MavisMcMinty · 24/04/2023 11:16

I’ve only seen one bluebell flower so far because we’re a good month behind everywhere else here in this frost pocket, but there’s so much bluebell leaf all through the woods, hope it’ll be as spectacular as it promises!

Not quite though that would indeed be glorious, bought specifically for primroses. Just the right shade of yellow, very thin china, perfect size. Cost two whole euro, but worth every cent.

SinnerBoy · 24/04/2023 12:53

That's lovely, Kuc.

SinnerBoy · 24/04/2023 12:56

Pear tree, no partridge.

SinnerBoy · 24/04/2023 13:03

Finally!

Next door’s pear tree has blossom. The pears mostly get eaten by squirrels though.

There are bluebells out in my garden so it seems to be bluebell time round here.

MmePoppySeedDefage · 24/04/2023 13:43

Thanks for the link Squeaky

Britinme · 24/04/2023 14:17

I miss bluebells! We're just starting to stagger into spring here - daffodils here and there. When I visited my son in New Jersey over Easter they were about a month ahead of us. You guys in England don't know how lucky you are to have the Gulf Stream!

Tricyrtis2022 · 24/04/2023 14:20

Spanish bluebells are out here, but the English ones aren't flowering yet as they always bloom a couple of weeks later. I love English bluebells, they're so dainty.

SinnerBoy · 24/04/2023 14:26

I think I've killed our snowdrops, by putting ash from the wood stove on our planter. The tulips have bloomed and the daffs are in bud.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 24/04/2023 14:27

Comments upthread tempted me to back and to read the most recent few hundred posts on THAT thread (hadn't been there since shortly after the great handover).

So offensive - 'cis' flung around like snuff at a wake and a presumption that everyone has a gender identity. The only slightly less dark spot was a pillock being called a pillock - not a very high bar. Shocking to see women so dismissive of women, and so indifferent to the harms being done to young people.

There's obviously a lot of that 'my friend/family member is trans and I love them' that was the starting point for many of us, but a general sticking with 'therefore I must do nothing to criticise genderism' rather than 'and why is this person I care about now more distressed than ever, and falling apart physically, who let that happen?'.

They increasingly seem a pack of narrow-minded dimwits living very sheltered lives. I'm glad we have Mumsnet.

SinnerBoy · 24/04/2023 14:32

It doesn't appear that I'm missing out on much, thanks for taking the time, Elderberry. Apart from clicking on links from these threads, I haven't been back since the first week I registered on MN.

I miss some of the politics and daft threads, but not as much as I'd thought I would.

Tricyrtis2022 · 24/04/2023 14:33

@SinnerBoy, if you have killed them, I'm constantly thinning out snowdrops and am happy to send you a bundle of them in-the-green.

I keep seeing you around on all sorts of threads, you've clearly made yourself completely at home here!

My garden has loads of Spanish bluebells. When I first moved in, I made some attempts to eliminate them (having read that they're really bad for hybridising with native bluebells). But they're so persistent that I've given up now and I just embrace the free flowers.

That's very kind, but they're easy to find at the garden centre.

Yes, I was a bit anxious at first, but there are plenty of things which interest me, for one reason or another. The atmosphere here's more pleasant (AIBU can get a bit lively...)

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 24/04/2023 15:33

My Spanish bluebells have gone mad too, they seem to cope well with the slightly weird weather - the respose of bulbs to last years' heat has been variable. Like Kuci I've tried to discourage them in the past (I have 'proper' bluebells in the meadow, that were there since it was part of a big field) but have almost given up. It did mean I was able to pick two big bunches of them yesterday, pink as well as blue - they look very pretty in their own lumpy way, with cow parsley and tellima.

Tricyrtis2022 · 24/04/2023 15:36

Sinner, I was a bit previous in offering them, tbh, but I give people plants so often it's a habit.

MavisMcMinty · 24/04/2023 16:22

It’s a great habit, @Tricyrtis2022 ! Patients were always giving me plants/cuttings/seeds from their gardens, and whenever I saw that plant I’d think “oh there’s Beryl’s penstemon”, etc - it’s a great way to be remembered.

Tricyrtis2022 · 24/04/2023 16:57

That sounds lovely, @MavisMcMinty! I have a garden full of plants that remind me of the people they came from and, in summer, not many visitors leave here without a plant being given to them. If I've got spares I give them away.

Ginmonkeyagain · 24/04/2023 16:57

I've managed to get myself unsubscribed from the site on my phone and can't seem to get the password resent to me.

Anyway hello all.

I know we like a bit of property boggling here - this one definitely has a back story.

Check out this 3 bedroom detached house for sale on Rightmove

Tricyrtis2022 · 24/04/2023 17:00

The first thing that came to mind with that property was 'offices' and the second was 'flooding'. I wonder what happened to the previous occupants?
