Thread 7 - TalkLair: “In fact it’s an oblate spheroid”

1000 replies

Kucinghitam · 20/04/2023 20:05

Continuation of previous threads (thread 6).
The new lair of JTT escapees is all cosy and homey; we have truly settled here. Outside, the garden is blooming with spring flowers. Inside, the hearth is glowing, pictures are up on the walls, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

You would need a “walled garden” to keep the floodwater out. I know a doctor who had an indoor swimming pool, then boarded it over to make a really excellent party room/teenagers’ retreat. The paving would be where I’d start, along with that poor neglected garden. And you’d think they’d’ve swept the leaves off that balcony/terrace before photographing it.

I like it!

I've managed to get myself unsubscribed from the site on my phone and can't seem to get the password resent to me.

Anyway hello all.

I know we like a bit of property boggling here - this one definitely has a back story.

Goodness, that is quite a house! The staircase has an art deco feel about it, which doesn't match the exterior.

When I was in uni, we used to take the train from Egham to Staines for a slightly-less-shitty-but-still-definitely-crap shopping experience.

And where are the bedrooms?

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 24/04/2023 17:14

OK, I looked. And will make only 1 comment.

Racehorses are horses. Carthorses are horses. Shetland ponies are horses. Seahorses are not horses.

Now to look at the house....

Ginmonkeyagain · 24/04/2023 17:17

@Kucinghitam we rented a huge but slughtly elderly Victorian house along the Thames the year after university - our basement kitchen was somewhat damp.

Ginmonkeyagain · 24/04/2023 17:19

@BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn indeed. My experimental foray is over being branded as I have "unsafe".

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 24/04/2023 17:19

That is deeply bizarre.

Why are there carpet tiles over the pool? And how are there carpet tiles over the pool? It's not a pull-across cover, because the top of the step handrails go through it.

I know right? I can't work out the how.

That is where the bodies of the former owners are ...... obviously.

Ginmonkeyagain · 24/04/2023 17:23

Looking at the price history it looks to have never been on the market before - so I assume it was built for the owners who are now selling it (or their beneficiaries are).

I can't help thinking with the swimkign pool and bar it was, in its time, a party house for sex people.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 24/04/2023 17:28

That makes sense Gin. I'd briefly wondered 'brothel?' but there's no obvious security set-up. Kitchen, office, bar, two reception rooms and swimming pool - yes, party house sounds about right.

Ginmonkeyagain · 24/04/2023 17:52

Like Kuc I know the area well - it is nice and secluded along that way and there would probably be moorings for boats.

There was some pretty serious flooding round there in 2014 when the Thames burst its banks - I wonder if that preciptated the decline of the property.

angelico53 · 24/04/2023 17:57

You made excellent contributions to That Thread, @Ginmonkeyagain. I hadn't quite realised, even now, how (a) utterly self-absorbed and uncurious about women we men are, and (b) how deep into the rabbit hole of post-modernism and its sad children some women have tunneled.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 24/04/2023 18:12

you did, Gin, but honestly, save your sanity and back out. At the moment they're beyond reasoning with. If any of them are genuinely interested they can always do what we did and move here.

Ginmonkeyagain · 24/04/2023 18:20

I thought I would try in genuine good faith.

artant · 24/04/2023 21:17

That house is odd!

And Staines-upon-Thames sounds very grand for, well, Staines.

MouseMinge · 24/04/2023 21:38

I was deeply into post-modern theory in the late 90s but even then I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have fallen down the rabbit hole of genderism. Thankfully, despite still finding a lot of post-modernist theory really interesting and quite helpful as a way of thinking, I see the link to queer theory and genderism risible.

I'm off to the Peaks tomorrow so I should get a little bit of light packing done. Layers!

artant · 24/04/2023 22:14

I have just read the last day or so of the thread over there. I read a lot more than I post but on the whole I think I prefer it here.

In art terms, postmodern theory can be very useful as a way of understanding culture. Doesn’t mean you have to buy in to all aspects though.

MavisMcMinty · 24/04/2023 22:54

I went to bed very late, gone 5am, and almost the moment my head hit the pillow, the dawn chorus began. There was a blackbird or thrush singing its head off, either very very close to the bedroom window or just very very loud, and some of its song was completely new to me, it was pulling out every vocal trick. Some notes sounded experimental, almost uncertain, and it made me giggle so much, which woke macman up and then he couldn’t get back to sleep because of the racket.

duc748 · 25/04/2023 09:41

I'm awaiting some guys who are coming to take my beloved Alfa away, they've been in touch and are on their way. meanwhile, I settle down to breakfast, and one bite of that rye sourdough toast, and there's a crack, and my upper denture breaks in half. So I can't eat, and I can't talk properly. Great! 😡just rang the dentist, best I got out of them was, ring back tomorrow morning. Not the best start to the day.

Kucinghitam · 25/04/2023 09:48

Oh no @duc748! That's definitely not a good way to start the morning, I hope things improve for the rest of the day.

Gonners · 25/04/2023 10:00

Argh @duc748 This happened to MrG recently and although the dentist took them in for repair the same day, they sent them to a technician in Cornwall or Devon, the equivalent of sending something from London to Newcastle, and then the postmen went on strike. It may be worth Googling "denture repair technicians" to see if there's one locally.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 25/04/2023 10:09

I was going to suggest the same thing - my father found a repair chap who did a next-day service.

duc748 · 25/04/2023 10:32

Yes, I'm going to do that as soon as these guys have been and gone...

OK, that's all done; the Alfa has gone. Now off to Google...

angelico53 · 25/04/2023 11:01

Good luck @duc748 .

All three of us at angelico towers need lots of dental work and I can't even get through to my dentist. We are going for a consultation with a place in Liverpool that's highly recommended by friends, and I reckon we'll be looking at more £000s than I have. I'm going to sell a good guitar, should get £5K with luck.

Our boy has been researching Turkey teeth, and they're miles cheaper but also miles away if they go wrong.
