Continuation of previous threads (thread 5).

Gather here all ye refugees from the JTT Flat Earth Society, welcome to the reassuringly oblate spheroid of MN! Ye all already know the answers to the questions "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

So really we're all here just to chat randomly.

Hello new thread.

It’s been trying to snow here (north London) but not really succeeding and I think
it’s stopped now. Cold though.

I love snow but I’m ready for it to be spring now. There are daffodils and blossom and there is planting to be done. Enough with the winteriness.

Snow. FFS. I hate it, snow should be in December.

I want to be planting. Specifically I want to be planting forget-me-nots, which have vanished from the borders and the wood but are all over what should be the vegetable patch. It should be asy enough to transplant them now (though there are weedy wild f-m-n s hiding among them and I may slip up). Too cold for that today though. There are foxgloves and Hesperis (mainly in the paths) due for a similar fate.

Every late spring, I look at forget-me-nots in other people's gardens and think "Oh, they'd look lovely amongst my tulips, I must sow some seeds." Every early-mid spring, I realise I forgot the forget-me-not seeds 🤦🏻‍♀️

But! Today I have productively indoor sown some SE Asian blue pea flowers (aka butterfly pea flowers or in Malay bunga telang).

The name is genuinely a reference to the form of the flowers Blush

I collected and dried several pods when I was back home last summer, and have been waiting until now to sow them. I don't know if they'll germinate. They are a beautiful climber and we collect and dry the flowers to make "tea" and also natural colouring for several Malaysian recipes.

I also want to be potting up errant f-me-nots for a friend, so I can rationalise the foxgloves there.

You're not in Surrey are you, kuc?

We had a huge funeral for my mum last April, and I had jamjars full of f-me-nots and Spanish bluebells from my garden on all the tables in the marquee.

It's a rare day when my efforts at stylish decor pay off, but it really was lovely.

Nice blue Clits Kuc!

Forget-me-not plants should be available now, and half a dozen would probably keep you in self-seeded descendants for years (despite my having lost lots of them in last years extremely dry Spring).

@MrsBertBibby Ah no, I'm in The North.

@DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry Aythangyew! Grin Perhaps this weekend I'll try to herd the family to our local garden centre in search of forget-me-nots. It's a very tiny one though, the selection is usually very limited. One of the few times I miss having a car is for garden centres; the big ones are usually in really out-of-the-way locations.

In the olden days local shops would sometimes have flat boxes of biennials ready for planting out - no idea whether that still happens.

Blackthorn blossom is so lovely. Shame about the thorns and pollen, but you can't have everything...

Is the pollen very allergy-provoking, then?

It is for me. Pollen season starts in February, when the hazel catkins open. It never used to be like this and only started in recent years. It's yer age, love.

What ho, new thread and thank as ever, kuc.

I was on a horrific deadlined job last year and it was december before I got my spring bulbs in. They've come up alrigth but they're very sorry for themselves, short and spindly compared to the ones around here.

Anyone used nematodes for slugs? I've just bought a pack but I'll wait until it's a litte warmer before trying. Never used them before, and I won't put pellets down. I've tried slugpubs, copper strips, all sorts. I've even been known to swipe a BB gun from a nipper in the past, and simply shot the buggers. Seems harsh but rather that than salt, and these big, orange blighters, six inches long with huge teef ike iss came from Andomeda - of that I'm certain.

I just move slugs away from the border and out onto the grass. I'm sure some of them come back, but the plants do okay. On the whole, healthy plants don't get eaten.

Simply writing those words probably means everything I try to grow will look like a doiley this year.

It also reminds me that I wants to see if I can find out what has been eating some of my anemone leaves - tiny holes, not slugs.

Ah, you have the Ethpanish Ethlugs! Vile creatures. I've discovered that the bastards really like to gather in evil gangs, plotting, in the plastic compost bin, where they outnumber the worms by about 10-to-1. When enough of them come to the surface, I boil the kettle ... Very few worms are harmed, as they mostly hang out under the lid.

I never remember to plant anything until too late, so at this time of year the garden is quite sad.
