'90s and early 2000s reality tv shows

Does anyone else remember when reality tv shows were becoming popular? Things like Driving School. Remember Maureen? And Life of Grime with Mr Trebus? He had such a sad story.

There was one about the residents of a particular street but I can't remember what it was called now.

Can anyone remember any others?

Loved these programmes. Fond memories of watching them and my Dad coming into the living room and saying "what 's that rubbish you're watching" . Apart from the 1900 house, 1940 house etc, he used to like those ones. I applied to be on the Edwardian country house one but I didn't get picked.

I blame so many Tory benefits policies (2 child cap, benefit cap, universal credit) on Lizzie from Wife Swap. The look on that Emma's face when she realised Lizzie and Mark got more in benefits because they had 8 DCs than her and her husband brought in from their 2 jobs, with their 2 DCs captured a mood I think.

Enfys1982 · 08/04/2023 10:12

@Aphrathestorm I’m no Tory but we had a Labour government when Lizzie appeared on Wife Swap. It was twenty odd years ago now. Lizzie was actually really clever, she won a celebrity edition of the Weakest Link.

What was the show where 18 year olds went on club 18-30s type holidays and their parents secretly watched their behaviour??

Enfys1982 · 08/04/2023 10:44

I remember one of those 18-30 holiday type shows where a drunken young lad stuck a firework up his bottom and unsurprisingly ended up seriously injured.

mewkins · 08/04/2023 10:58

It was Sun Sex and Suspicious parents 😄 it was more like 2010s so a bit later than I thought

SpreadableCheeseOnEverything · 08/04/2023 11:03

Hotel was another good one. Mid-late 90s, BBC show set at the Royal Adelphi in Liverpool

TulipTuesday · 08/04/2023 11:21

Yes! Thank you.

The bit I remember most was the Liverpool mum tearing down the decorative hops in the country kitchen 😯

She ended up on a few shows but I can’t remember her name.

There was another one on BBC3 I think. Teen couples (?) Were given a baby to look after for a couple of days. Then a toddler. Then a pre-schooler etc. Ending with an elderly person to care for.

No idea what it was called though.

The Baby Borrowers - I use it in PSHE lessons :)

The Marriage

The mid 80's I think, it followed a young couple Mark and Karen I think from engagement, to their first year as a married couple.

I loved that, still together as far as I know

That reminded me an old school friend of mine brother was on a similar show probably late 90,s and they filmed his wedding and all the run up.to it ?they might have followed several couples

im desperate to rewatch Holiday Reps.

does anyone remember the U.K. version of Real World with students in Manchester? There was a girl called Spider?

Yes! I came on the thread to say about the student house,I was a student nurse at the time so it was mid 90,s and living in Salford so only a couple of miles from Manchester I used to.see Spider out and about in pubs and clubs ,I don't think the show lasted long though?

Teatime55 · 08/04/2023 12:43

I’m watching The Living Soap on YouTube, it’s really dull. 😂

Goingtobee · 08/04/2023 13:08

@TulipTuesday thats the episode I remember too! The lady was called Ronnie somethings and was on a couple of programmes. The bit that made me laugh was that she got very upset that the hosts had put the ‘second best bedding’ on for their stay and she was declaring what high cleaning standard she had, you could eat off her kitchen floor etc - she then blew her nose into the tea towel!

I was a student in Manchester at the time and the house was near us. I don’t recall seeing any around and about.

JudgeRinderonTinder · 08/04/2023 14:27

Love in the countryside with sarah cox was great

Wife swap!

The winner of playing it straight won (because he convinced the girl he was straight) and he felt so bad he gave her half his winnings! She's now a presenter Ellie someone..

I thought she was called Zoe. I remember that ending though!

lapasion · 08/04/2023 16:31

I’ve just remembered another early 00s monstrosity: There’s Something About Miriam. A group of guys competed to date a model, but they didn’t know until the end that Miriam was transgender. I remember there were lawsuits and all sorts.

Also wasn’t there a show where Paul Burrell tried to teach young ladettes to become princesses? I remember TV Burp used to make fun of it all the time because one of the contestants was an Aussie called Kylie Boobie or similar. But I can’t recall anything else about the show.

tobee · 08/04/2023 16:49

I love the terrible puns for the titles - Vanity Lair!!! Grin

What was the one called where "delinquent" teens got sent to the wilderness of America and had to do things like start a fire from twigs? That was fun.

And The World's Strictest Parents where similar types had to go and stay with religious families in the US (and other countries) and the teens had to get up and do hours of community activities on Saturday mornings etc.

Two other good, more recent ones were the one with Tyger Drew Honey from Outnumbered and other celebrities living like Industrial Revolution workers at the Black Country Living Museum and another celeb one going on Pilgrimage. Both don't sound that promising but were both good

tobee · 08/04/2023 16:55

I've just looked up that Tyger Drew Honey one and it was called 24 Hours in the Past (forgettable title) and also had Colin Jackson, Alastair McGowan and Ann Widdicombe!!!

FlowerFlour · 08/04/2023 16:56

Wow this thread is bring back so many memories!

Does anybody remember that episode of Bad Lads Army (young offenders are shipped off to a 50s style army barracks) where one of the recruits was a complete lazy fool and kept just giving up and lying down in the middle of a hike, so all his team had to carry him. His team kept getting collective punishment for him being so useless but he didn't give a shit. I think it ended in violence because his squad were being punished every day for his behaviour.

Also the episode of Would Like To Meet where a very trainspotterish man had never had a date. The advisors came to his house and discovered lots of weird stuff, including his childhood pet mouse who had been stuffed. The experts told him to get rid of the mouse because it was creepy and weird, but then the man ended up on a date with a woman who'd had her dog taxidermied. I really hope they worked out!

I also loved 60 minute makeover - a whole house being redecorated in 1 hour. They managed to do so much.

(Why is this stuff taking up space in my brain?!)

Ooh shades of Full Metal Jacket. It does ring a bell.

Trying to drink a cup of tea but laughing too much thinking about Harry Hill talking about Kylie Boobie.
