Have you ever been unable to watch an actor again after a particular performance?

For example: I saw Christian Bale in American Psycho when it came out and he played the role so completely I have never been able to watch him in anything again.

For that reason I refused to watch David Tennant as Dennis Nilson. I can't be put off DT.

Mark Rylance after Bones and All, because I thought he was awful in it.

DW cannot watch Michael Elphick in anything without referring to him as "that bastard that bullied the Elephant Man!"

Gladiaterf · 29/03/2023 10:53

I struggled to watch Michael Fassbender after watching Shame, because I just kept seeing his big swinging penis.

The guy from Horrible Histories that was a horrible peado in Broadchurch. It was just wrong (extra points for saying that it Ghost's Pat's voice)

I'm sad to say Dominic West as Fred West scarred me for life. Can't watch him anymore.

Cattenberg · 29/03/2023 11:00

I can still watch Dominic West, but I could never find him attractive again!

Me too. He was just too much like him. I don't know how his wife could live with him after that performance.

Ben Affleck, I've never been able to believe his acting, never.

Appalonia · 29/03/2023 11:08

Daniel Mays after he played a rapist. Shudder.

Cattenberg · 29/03/2023 11:09

Daniel Mays is an excellent actor.

I struggle not to turn off if I even catch a whiff of Andi MacDowell. She was so appallingly wooden in Four weddings. It's like I'm allergic to her.

Same. I tried to watch him as Charles in the Crown and I just saw Fred West. I guess it shows how well he played the part.

I'm like this with keira knightly. She acts with her chin and it bugs me. Much to the disgust of my 14yo dd who loves her. 😁

Not quite the same thing, but I so adore and admire Simon Russell Beale, especially his Hamlet, Ariel and Benedick, that I still slightly fancied him as Beria in The Death of Stalin, which was pretty disturbing to me.

Ifnottodaywhen · 29/03/2023 14:02

I think I've had that before as well. I vaguely remember watching something years and years ago where someone was playing a right creepy bastard and I just thought, yeah I still would though. No idea who that was.

I felt like that about Alan Rickman as the Sheriff of Nottingham. And Hans WhatsHisFace.

Same for both of those!

I hated Robert Carlyle for years after he was Albie in Cracker. He was so evil in that.
It took me to The Full Monty to get over it.

We saw Daniel Mays in Guys and Dolls last night as Nathan Detroit. He's far and away the best thing about it and the cast all come out to have a dance with the audience at the end.

Pinkywoo · 29/03/2023 14:24

Kevin Bacon after seeing Sleepers, I can just about forget when watching Tremors because he looks different (and I love that film!) but anything else I keep thinking he's secretly evil.

myveryownelectrickitten · 29/03/2023 14:28

I adore Gillian Anderson but can’t watch her in anything after Thatcher in The Crown. She won an Emmy for it but I just thought it was awful, and since then her acting seems to have gone particularly arch and hammy! Leave Netflix alone, Gillian!

HealthyFats · 29/03/2023 14:31

Kevin McNally once played a far right nutter who put a woman's head in a deep fat fryer. That's all I can see whenever I watch him in anything else, or even listen to him as Tony Hancock.

GCWorkNightmare · 29/03/2023 14:31

Mamma Mia ruined Pierce Brosnan for me.

curtaintwitcher23 · 29/03/2023 14:39

I have been watching Abbott elementary and just can't get along with Tyler James Williams being an adult with a really deep voice not Chris in Everybody hates Chris- weird because I'm totally past Daniel Radcliffe for example being Harry Potter.

twolilacs · 29/03/2023 14:41

Anthony Hopkins after the film Magic.
Silence of the Lambs didn't endear him to me either.

Crutcher · 29/03/2023 14:41

Kris Marshall will always be Nick from My Family.

On a side note, Ross Geller and Hermione are just as self righteous and annoying in real life.
