Have you ever been unable to watch an actor again after a particular performance?

For example: I saw Christian Bale in American Psycho when it came out and he played the role so completely I have never been able to watch him in anything again.

For that reason I refused to watch David Tennant as Dennis Nilson. I can't be put off DT.

Crutcher I saw David Schwimmer on Celebrity Bake Off recently and thought he was adorable!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 29/03/2023 17:17

Russell Crowe.

Gladiator was fine. Perfectly acceptable movie. As was Master and Commander. And barely noticeable in the Man of Steel/Justice League movies over the shitness that was everything else. Inoffensive in the various bloke with a sword movies that fill up wet Saturday evenings here, too.

Then he turned up in the abomination that was Tom Cruise Mummy rehash doing his full on Ray Winstone voice.

And then there was the latest Thor movie where he's doing Harry Enfield as Stavros instead. And they claimed that it was his idea and it was better that way,

What dirt does he have on directors that they seriously indulge him with this nonsense? I'm more than happy to suspend disbelief critical faculties for supernatural/mutant/extraterrestrial demigods visiting New York/Sweden/the Colliseum for three hours, but this? Nope. Nope, nope, nope.

Rory Kinnear since I watched Black Mirror. Every time I look at him I just think of him and the pig.

Funkyslippers · 29/03/2023 17:46

Jijithecat oh God yes. Which sick mind thought up that storyline?!

mummypigoink · 29/03/2023 17:51

Jamie Dornan in The Fall. It was the dead behind the eyes expression that terrified me.

Saved me from Fifty Shades though.

I had to stop watching The Fall, I was only about four or five episodes in when I woke up at 4am with a start because I heard a whisper in my ear "he's in the house" and for a couple of seconds I knew it was him.

I did manage to watch him in other things since, he was in Once Upon a Time for the early episodes.

Oh gosh to my huge shame at the time i was strangely drawn to 'Wild Bill' (the child killer 😳) in The Green Mile.

It was the first time i'd seen Sam Rockwell in anything, didn't know him at all.

Now i've seen him in other things i can forgive myself a little because i quite fancy him in everything else as well.

God I thought that part was played by Bill Paxton and he'd upped his acting skills

Bloody hell. I’d never sleep again if that happened 😫

I struggle not to turn off if I even catch a whiff of Andi MacDowell. She was so appallingly wooden in Four weddings. It's like I'm allergic to her.

yup. Me too. And I liked her very much in Sex Lies & Videotape.

clarepetal · 29/03/2023 18:05

It was David Tenant who played a psychopath in a series in the naughties that made me scared for a long time.

SweetCoriander · 29/03/2023 18:08

I'm old enough to have seen Daniel Craig as the increasingly crumbling Geordie in Our Friends in the North. My OH has never seen it.

So when I tell OH he reminds me of Daniel Craig he's thinking James Bond, and I'm thinking Geordie ...

same lovely eyes though.

Same. Just reading his name gives me the shudder. He was terrific (as was Gillian Anderson) but I can’t watch him in anything else.

Saucery · 29/03/2023 18:24

Shaun Dooley. He’s been in loads of things and also does a lot of voiceovers. I’m sure he’s a nice man and a good actor, but after seeing him in Eden Lake I can’t watch or listen to him without thinking of his character in that.

I struggle with John Lithgow after his turn as the trinity killer in Dexter. He creeps me out in everything now, even stuff I've seen before Dexter.

Can you watch him singing for Children In Need and being surprised by Taylor Swift (who is a giant) as a sort of palate cleanser? I love that

Gary Oldman after he played the evil crooked cop in Leon. He terrified me. Just can’t see him in anything else.

Seeleyboo · 29/03/2023 21:34

The guy who played Trevor in Eastenders. He scared the crap out of me.

WandaWonder · 29/03/2023 21:45

It took me ages to watch Anthony Hopkins after silence of the lambs

I'm like this with keira knightly. She acts with her chin and it bugs me. Much to the disgust of my 14yo dd who loves her. 😁

She acts with her chin 😂

I’ve often thought she has a significant underbite that she seems to utilise a lot in how she portrays her roles. Now I have a phrase for it! My DP loves her.

EarringsandLipstick · 29/03/2023 22:04

I love - LOVE - Jason Bateman, and one of my favourite cheer-me-up movies is The Switch, where he & Jennifer Anniston play love interests (and yeah, there's lots of problematic parts to it but I ignore that as it's all so sweet ...)

Anyway ... I also loved Ozark but Jason Bateman is scary as fuck in it.

I had to re-watch The Switch a few times, determinedly, to exorcise the memory!

neilyoungismyhero · 29/03/2023 22:07

Slightly different but just can't watch John Candy films, I loved him - because he died.

TruthsAndALie · 29/03/2023 22:09

I cannot stand Jim Carey’s style of acting. In anything. Ever.

So true! I saw him on stage in a comic role and he was amazing but a little bit of me was still scared!

WomensLandArmy · 29/03/2023 22:31

Never felt the same about Patrick swayze after Donny Darko. Revolting character.
