Have you ever been unable to watch an actor again after a particular performance?

For example: I saw Christian Bale in American Psycho when it came out and he played the role so completely I have never been able to watch him in anything again.

For that reason I refused to watch David Tennant as Dennis Nilson. I can't be put off DT.

I felt that way for a long time after watching James Marsden as a sociopathic rapist in Gossip. It took until 27 Dresses to get over it 😂

Kevin Bacon after seeing Sleepers, I can just about forget when watching Tremors because he looks different (and I love that film!) but anything else I keep thinking he's secretly evil.

Same for me

BlueBananaLlama · 29/03/2023 15:37

Laurence Fox. After seeing him acting in that role where he is a conspiracy - obsessed far right nutjob. It's put me right off watching Lewis.

😂

I think I've had that before as well. I vaguely remember watching something years and years ago where someone was playing a right creepy bastard and I just thought, yeah I still would though. No idea who that was.

Oh gosh to my huge shame at the time i was strangely drawn to 'Wild Bill' (the child killer 😳) in The Green Mile.

It was the first time i'd seen Sam Rockwell in anything, didn't know him at all.

Now i've seen him in other things i can forgive myself a little because i quite fancy him in everything else as well.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 29/03/2023 15:54

I saw Chris O'Dowd in a film called Calvary. He was so scary I find it hard to watch him in anything else.

I don't like watching Keira Knightly much but I'll give her another chance every now and then. I did think that she had massively improved her acting ability when I was watching her in V for Vendetta, but that turned out to Natalie Portman. Grin

James Nesbitt in The Secret, every time I look at him I see Colin Howell.

I'm not sure he was acting in it!

Hugh Bonnerville. he was so "good" as the evil man in I came by, weird as I know in rl he is nice.

ArcticBells · 29/03/2023 16:22

Stephen Mangan after The Split. He'll always be Nathan to me

Came on to say exactly this. Doesn't help that this was the first film I remember seeing him in so that was my first impression

James Norton in Happy Valley for me. Vile character, but still utterly compelling.

Me too. He was just too much like him. I don't know how his wife could live with him after that performance.

I imagine him carrying on a fairly public affair with Lily James was more off-putting.

CherryKolaKubes · 29/03/2023 16:30

Mine was David Tennant in Des. He was absolutely fantastic. But I now can’t bear to look at him and I wish I hadn’t watched it, it’s ruined anything he’s in for me!

Fair point. 🤣

Yes he was brilliant in that. I remember at the time it came out his wife posted a screen shot from the series on her instagram and said “lucky me” and made a comment that the resemblance was very weird!

MarshaBradyo · 29/03/2023 16:35

I can’t stand James Norton now, he irritated me too much I’m Happy Valley

Toomanycreatures · 29/03/2023 16:42

Ray Winstone in The War Zone. Shame, because he's an amazing actor. I have a lot of respect for him for taking on such a role, and Tim Roth for directing. But it was too realistic for me. I felt like I was witnessing an actual crime.

missingthewinchesterboys · 29/03/2023 16:43

Theo James after The Inbetweeners movie when he had poo in his nose. I jaunt can't un see the vileness of that scene.

TooBigForMyBoots · 29/03/2023 16:48

James McAvoy in Filth. I really fancied him before that.

Violethayes · 29/03/2023 17:01

Had recently discovered Claes Bang and thought he was just divine , till I watched him in Bad Sisters. I’m hoping to watch him In something else and get those feelings back as I was crushing hard ..

That's a horrible film. One of the worst I've seen.
I admire Winston as an actor though.

So it seems that Kevin Bacon is either secretly evil or just a very, very good actor!

HowardKirksConscience · 29/03/2023 17:11

Mark Strong, after seeing him in a TV film about domestic violence. He was just so realistically menacing that I can't watch him now without getting the creeps.
