What kind of drinker are you?

Hi,

Just interested really.

I'm a weekend drinker, who knows they drink more than the RWA and who occasionally toys with the idea of going teetotal....but then comes Friday again 😬

I will drink in the week too if it's a special occasion/social event/holiday/Christmas etc, but I did used to drink most days regardless of what kind of day it was. Only a glass or two on week nights, but more at the weekends. An improvement I guess 🤷‍♀️

Still, overall I'd say I drink a little too much and I'm in two minds whether to quit. Part of me thinks it's OK because I don't allow myself many other treats and have a healthy diet otherwise, don't smoke, life's too short etc, but then the other part thinks just stop. It's never going to be good for me.

How about you? What kind of drinker are you and are you happy about it?

A non-drinker and very happy. Like you I spent a while pondering whether to stop drinking (usually drank over the 14 units but not miles over) and I am so pleased I did. No more hangovers, no more fretting.

Very little- a few drinks a year! Alcohol is poison to your body in a literal sense. Regular drinking creates dependence and stores up all manner of problems. It rarely benefits anyone

Itsvalentino · 28/03/2023 17:40

I’m not a regular drinker, but when I do I drink too much. I drank 2 bottles of wine in 1.5 hours on Saturday and I was bladdered. And paid for it the next day. I probably won’t drink for another month or so now.

Groutyonehereagain · 28/03/2023 17:40

I’m a once in a blue moon drinker.

HippoStraw · 28/03/2023 17:41

Little and often I guess. One glass of wine while cooking about 4 nights a week

3WildOnes · 28/03/2023 17:47

I'll have a glass of wine 2-3 times a week. Every couple of weeks I might have 2-3 glasses of wine in a night when socialising.

This thread is going to make me feel bad isn't it? 😑

A once a week 'a few glasses on Saturday nighter' here, OP, if that makes you feel any better.

Trekkingaway · 28/03/2023 18:10

I drink socially at weekends only. I'm not good at stopping after one or two and often drink more than I intended, resulting in a hangover, but never enough to really show myself up.

I'm a happy drunk, tbh I quite like my drunk self. It's just me but a bit less shy.

Cuwins · 28/03/2023 18:15

Non drinker and never have drunk really- went through a phase in my late 20's of having the very occasional glass of wine but haven't had any for years now and don't miss it at all.

midlander79 · 28/03/2023 18:16

I'm very similar to you OP. Same in that I exercise and eat healthily, am in good health and a healthy weight so why not, same 'life's too short', and then sometimes think 'that's it, I need to cut back'!

I rarely drink enough to be drunk but It's my little pleasure. I love the bit of buzzy feeling I get. Trouble is I then sometimes think I want that feeling to last a little longer so I drink more. It's so expensive too!

I love drinking! I regularly drink over the limit, mainly at weekends. However, I've taken regular breaks over the years (dry Jan, etc). Currently doing Sober Spring!

Until recently, I've managed to kid myself that because my diet is healthy and I exercise regularly (which has become increasingly more difficult to maintain as I get older... hangovers and anxiety ruin my motivation) I'm undoing any damage caused by my drinking. How wrong was I?! I've recently discovered that alcohol is as carcinogenic as smoking! It's rather shocking!

Listen to the Huberman Labs podcast on the effects of alcohol on your brain and body, if you need a kick up the bum!

Try not to beat yourself up though OP, plenty of people over indulge. Drinking is ingrained into our culture.

shelbaba · 28/03/2023 20:00

Used to be the weekend drinker when I was a teen and going out with friends. I'm the hardly ever drinker now.

I don't know if I've got an intolerance to alcohol but I don't seem to get drunk without being ill. infact I don't even get to the point of being drunk before I'm feeling/being sick. Used to put up with it when I was young but now I don't. Also got 2 young kids so I'm never out and often have the car with me.

I only really drink when on holiday or sometimes in the summer having a bbq or at Xmas if I'm at home. I don't like wine, I really enjoy cocktails especially frozen ones so more so on holiday!

Ichosetheredpill · 28/03/2023 20:03

I am a very occasional drinker. I make a bottle of whisky or sherry last a couple of months or more. Sometimes I get the urge to get tipsy but I’ve never really tolerated alcohol since I gave up while pregnant with DCs so I know I’ll pay for it the next day. That said, I’m on antibiotics at the moment and strictly can’t drink so of course all I want is a tipple.

golddustwomen · 28/03/2023 20:03

I'm the exact same as you op, except I smoke.

WunWun · 28/03/2023 20:06

These days I don't drink often, I've only had a couple since Christmas day. But if I do go 'out out' I am a ridiculous binge drinker. I find it hard to stop after one. Then I am hungover to fuck got days and full of regret. It really affects my already crap mental health.

GiltEdges · 28/03/2023 20:08

I'm a "couple of glasses of wine on a weekend evening" type drinker. Might have the odd glass Mon-Thur too if I'm particularly stressed with work/parenting(!), which isn't all that often. Like you OP, I consider cutting it out altogether, but I enjoy a drink and don't have any other vices really so 🤷‍♀️

PotOfTeaForOne · 28/03/2023 20:19

I'm a social, don't keep alcohol in the house drinker. I probably drink a couple of times a month. I can quite easily go to a pub and just have a soft drink.

A few years ago I fell into the habit of having a g&t after work, then 1 turned into 2, then 2 turned into 3. I figured it was a bad habit and so I stopped buying gin to keep at home. Feel much better for it.

happysingleversary · 28/03/2023 20:20

I like to drink alone at home and watch TV shows. Once in the week, 2 bottles of wine over 8 hours.

At weekend more socially over more hours but more drinks.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 28/03/2023 20:21

Binge drinker once a week.Usually 2 bottles of wine.

fellrunner85 · 28/03/2023 20:25

I'm a non-drinker.
Like you, I think "life's too short" - but I interpret it differently. For me, life is too short to feel sick, tired and paranoid the next day - and have crap sleep - just because I like the taste of red wine. I drink so little now that when I do have a drink (maybe once every year or two) it has a huge effect; and I feel wretched the following day.
Also makes me realise how having such a high tolerance in my 20s wasn't a good thing for my body.

Seeingadistance · 28/03/2023 20:30

Heavy drinker in my teens and early twenties.

Now, I drink rarely.

When I'm on holiday, I'll maybe have a couple of beers or a glass of wine with a meal but not every day.

Nowadays, I feel quite tipsy on a small glass of wine!

Alstoybarn · 28/03/2023 20:32

Drink about 4 nights per week, bottle of wine sometimes more! Do regularly take a month off here and there to prove to myself I'm OK and mainly to try lose weight 😂

ThePoshUns · 28/03/2023 20:32

I'm a weekend binge drinker. Usually a bottle of wine of the course of the evening Friday and Saturday. I rarely get drunk or have a hangover unless I go out then I'll
drink more.
I do worry about it but not enough to stop.
I'm healthy in every other way, i exercise, eat healthy, don't smoke.
My friends drink about the same so I don't dwell on it too much.
