What kind of drinker are you?

Hi,

Just interested really.

I'm a weekend drinker, who knows they drink more than the RWA and who occasionally toys with the idea of going teetotal....but then comes Friday again 😬

I will drink in the week too if it's a special occasion/social event/holiday/Christmas etc, but I did used to drink most days regardless of what kind of day it was. Only a glass or two on week nights, but more at the weekends. An improvement I guess 🤷‍♀️

Still, overall I'd say I drink a little too much and I'm in two minds whether to quit. Part of me thinks it's OK because I don't allow myself many other treats and have a healthy diet otherwise, don't smoke, life's too short etc, but then the other part thinks just stop. It's never going to be good for me.

How about you? What kind of drinker are you and are you happy about it?

I have a couple of drinks on a Friday night, occasionally I will have a third but I risk a hangover then which I hate. I dont really like wine, i prefer rum and coke. If I go for a night out (very rare these days) I usually drink beer and i will have a fair few, i would usually get a bit merry but if I get close to over-doing it I will start to feel sick and dizzy, so at that point I stop. Haven't been drunk for many years, the hangovers aren't worth it. I am happy with my drinking, yes.

Impatientwino · 28/03/2023 20:36

Just posting to say I'm pretty much the same as you OP. A weekend drinker and regularly over the 'allowance'

I've been moderating much more successfully over the last few months. I highly recommend Anna Charles 90 days later podcast and her website with its resources. She even does coaching and webinars in moderation and AF and is completely and utterly non judgemental in her manner.

I drink most evening 2 or 3 glasses of wine, I am never drunk, I don't drink if I am out driving, I don't binge drink or go 'out' drinking. I enjoy the taste of a glass of wine with my evening meal - as did my DF who died at 90 after a full and happy life. I can afford it.

Could I be healthier? Probably... but at 64, still working and contributing to society by paying taxes, volunteering etc etc ... do I care? Not really Grin!

My 'life style' conscious friend, tee total, healthy diet, no stress ... developed cancer ... apart from having a CS I have never been in hospital in my life. Confused

I’m a summer-only, moderate drinker!

I have been a problem drinker in the past (intermittently during my 20s and early 30s) and then I finally learned where my ‘off switch’ is in my mid-late 30s. I also discovered that wine is not my friend (it had always been my drink of choice).

Now I’m mid 40s and symptoms of perimenopause have made alcohol pretty unappealing overall. I haven’t drunk wine for about 10 years and I have never drunk spirits so now beer and cider are the only alcoholic drinks I enjoy. I don’t fancy them in the winter because in my mind they’re sunny afternoon, beach/beer garden type of drinks. So I drink alcohol for about 3 months of the year, and even then it’ll be two or three beers once every 10 days or so and only ever on a Fri or Sat cause I can’t hack working the day after drinking. I also don’t like to drink past about 7-8pm so any drinking I do now is in an afternoon.

So in short, it’s sounds quite restricted (and totally lightweight compared to the boozing of my youth!), but in reality it’s just what I’ve arrived at as what works for me. I enjoy a few beers in the sun and on holidays but the rest of the time am happy without.

cherrypied · 28/03/2023 20:44

I drink 4/5 nights a week mostly one double gin and tonic, Friday Saturday maybe 2 or occasionally 3.

I've not had anything last night or tonight and won't have anything tomorrow as going out and driving.

I do Like alcohol and like cockatiels
On holiday and at Christmas.

I need to have three consecutive
alcohol Free says per week.

Probably won't have anything until
Friday.

MummBRaaarrrTheEverLeaking · 28/03/2023 20:44

Usually 4 nights out of the week, but I really can't handle a lot of drink (The room starts to spin and I feel very ill and then I whine about it. Loudly.) - so never to the point of being very drunk.

Usually it's a couple of large red wines, or a few spirits and mixers. Sometimes I finish the evening with a single malt over ice.

Hoolihan · 28/03/2023 20:47

Social binger. Drink nothing at home and nothing alone, but on nights out I'll drink loads and get drunk, sometimes very drunk. I've had serious issues in the past with falling over/doing and saying stupid things/putting myself at risk. I'm not so bad now after doing a lot of reading & abstinence in lockdown but it's still in me I think...

Vivacious78 · 28/03/2023 20:49

I drink 2-3 bottles a time

KissesTasteLikeWhiskey · 28/03/2023 20:52

Sometimes I drink a few times a week, sometimes I go weeks without. It depends what we’re up to.

I didn’t drink for years when our kids were young so can take it or leave it.

WhatFlavourIsIt · 28/03/2023 20:52

I drink most nights. I have 1 or 2 glasses of wine or a couple bottles of beer.

KissesTasteLikeWhiskey · 28/03/2023 20:53

Also, before kids I was a weekend binge drinker. I drank a lot most Friday and Saturdays.

usernotfound0000 · 28/03/2023 21:01

I'm a classic binge drinker really. I go weeks without a drink, only very occasionally drink at home, more over summer as like to have a gin in the garden of an evening, but even then I'm talking 2 drinks a week. But if I go out I drink way more than recommended. Luckily I only tend to go out properly about 4-5 times a year but I know it's not great.

lifesnotaspectatorsport · 28/03/2023 21:03

I was going to say little and often - but unlike pp I probably drink almost every day. 6 nights a week in all likelihood. But usually just 1 drink at a time, sometimes 2 at the weekend. I will drink more socially but very rarely get drunk.

I am not bothered about it - it's my only vice really. I don't like most soft drinks and enjoy a drink with my dinner at the end of a long day.

twoblueskies · 28/03/2023 21:04

This is interesting reading
Teen student drinking , liquor , cocktails , white lightening , wikid , Pernod , vodka . Anything from Thursday to Sunday
Then 15 years ago had first child and realised the whirling pits and parenthood didn't go well together . Drink no alcohol from then .

Husband still drinks and we don't agree on what's ok . He has a drink in afternoon to relax ( aka fall asleep 😴)

KILM · 28/03/2023 21:05

Semi-binger- although I hate that term! Every couple of weeks I'll go out and have over/under the recommended amount. I used to drink maybe the equivalent of a glass of wine or two 2l1-3 times a week but stopped to lose weight/exercise more.
Weirdly, I've found that losing the weight, eating healthier and exercising regularly has made any hangovers much better, even though I'm drinking less regularly.

ChocSaltyBalls · 28/03/2023 21:06

almost 2 years ago - heavy/addicted drinker, in despair, knowing I had to change but felt I couldn’t, worrying constantly what it would do to me, convinced I was going to die.

since the last over year and a half - a non drinker and it feels absolutely brilliant

waterlego · 28/03/2023 21:07

Well done @ChocSaltyBalls, that’s fantastic 👏🏻

Well done @ChocSaltyBalls, that’s fantastic 👏🏻

thank you. I didn’t think it was possible but if you want it enough and work at it, it is.

tomfromloveislandsbeard · 28/03/2023 21:10

A bottle of wine or a quarter of a bottle of gin 4 times a week or so.

I know it's not good for me but I bloody love it.

SaltanVinegar · 28/03/2023 21:10

I can take or leave alcohol. I opened a bottle of wine about two weeks ago and there’s still a glass left. I’d say I have alcohol every two months at most, and if I’m out for a meal or a party I often don’t bother with it so that I can drive home. So not teetotal, but a fairly infrequent drinker these days. Different when I was younger and going clubbing weekly!

TorviShieldMaiden · 28/03/2023 21:14

I drink a couple of times a week. Usually a bottle of wine (me and dp drink two bottles between us).

So more than recommended. I hardly drank anything for years as ex-h didn’t really drink and was very judgey about it.

I think about cutting back, but honestly my life is very very stressful at the moment and it feels like a necessity!

Fridayfeelingbeenandgone · 28/03/2023 21:29

I drink 2 or 3 nights a week. I gave up drinking wine years ago but have either 3 or 4 G&T's which I enjoy.

TheChosenTwo · 28/03/2023 21:36

Sporadic I’d say. Had a beer on Friday and 2 on Saturday but before that nothing for maybe 5 or 6 weeks. And sometimes 3 vodkas on a random Wednesday just because I fancy them.
I don’t set myself rules around drinking, if I want it (and I’m not driving anywhere) I’ll generally just have it but I’m not a big drinker in that sense, I just have to be in the mood for it.
dh however drinks every Friday and Saturday night unless poorly, we sometimes share a bottle of wine over Sunday dinner.

Poepourri · 28/03/2023 21:48

I drink most nights but with one or 2 nights a week off. Apart from Friday and Saturday I only have 1 small lager, so not much, at weekends I'll have wine.
Am gradually drinking less as I get older and feeling less psychologically fixed in the habit of drinking. A decade ago I would be having more midweek wine .

DustyLee123 · 28/03/2023 21:55

I used to drink 2 bottles a week, 3 in lock down, but pretty much gave up about 6 months ago.
It was affecting my sleep, making me so tired next day, and I started getting burning to my face.
Now I’ve stopped I don’t want to start again, although I’m not saying I won’t have the occasional glass in the future.
