What kind of drinker are you?

Hi,

Just interested really.

I'm a weekend drinker, who knows they drink more than the RWA and who occasionally toys with the idea of going teetotal....but then comes Friday again 😬

I will drink in the week too if it's a special occasion/social event/holiday/Christmas etc, but I did used to drink most days regardless of what kind of day it was. Only a glass or two on week nights, but more at the weekends. An improvement I guess 🤷‍♀️

Still, overall I'd say I drink a little too much and I'm in two minds whether to quit. Part of me thinks it's OK because I don't allow myself many other treats and have a healthy diet otherwise, don't smoke, life's too short etc, but then the other part thinks just stop. It's never going to be good for me.

How about you? What kind of drinker are you and are you happy about it?

Binge once a year and that's it. Very rarely (like once or twice a year) I have a cider in summer

Mañanarama · 29/03/2023 12:03

Binge drinker. I can go weeks or months without alcohol but give me a big event and I’m on the shots like it’s my last day on earth.

LemonJuiceFromConcentrate · 29/03/2023 12:07

I really like the idea of a glass of wine or G&T of an evening, but about 50 per cent of the time I pour it, can’t finish it and end up making a mug of tea instead.

The rest of the time, I love it and might have a second glass. Then that’s me for the night.

Over time, I probably average about one or two full drinks a week.

That sounds a bit “I am a teeny tiny delicate lady” but I’m actually a big strapping woman with a healthy appetite…it’s just that drink makes me sleepy.

I was always once in the blue moon drinker. But in the last year I’ve lost my son my husband and my mum. I’m now drinking a bottle of wine a night. I know I have a problem but I really don’t care

@7spanishangels oh my love, what a terrible terrible time you've had (are having) 🌷

I know you 'don't care' but you need to xx. It's not so much about the dying from something caused by drinking excessively, it's about ending up very ill and alone or in a care facility etc.

I understand it's very hard to find the motivation to care & look after yourself, but being alone & I'll is scary & horrible.

I hope you can get some support to feel you're worth looking after xx

Your replies have genuinely really got me thinking.

I used to binge at weekends, like a bottle of wine on Fri and sat sometimes more. But it was creeping up to in the week as well. Now I try and moderate by having a glass of wine every night and one night off…so make a bottle last a few nights. I now drink 2 bottles a week which I know is still too much! But like others i exercise a lot and feel healthy so I kid myself this cancels it out. I know I’m too reliant on that glass of wine a night tho, I look forward to it during the day. This thread isn’t too bad but mumsnet makes me laugh at times as everyone always says they don’t drink or just drink at Xmas and tell you off for drinking… but there was another thread about what people are doing on a Saturday night and most people talked about how they were cracking open a bottle of red 😂🤷‍♀️

fussychica · 29/03/2023 12:35

15 units over 3 nights a week, nothing on the other 4. Quite happy with that.

MarshaBradyo · 29/03/2023 12:37

Light these days. Have one or two weekend nights, none during week unless special occasion.

Can drink a bit more if in right social setting

TruthsAndALie · 29/03/2023 12:49

I drink 4-5 nights a week. Couple of glasses of wine usually, don’t drink any more at the weekend than I would during the week but might swap for a G&T. Most likely over the RWA overall.

Healthy BMI. Exercise 4 times a week. 10k steps per day. Cook everything from scratch. Low resting heart rate and perfect blood pressure.

Not worried and don’t get all the angst on MN (unless someone is clearly problem drinking). Life is a series of trade offs and risks.

Iamblossom · 29/03/2023 12:53

I drink a glass of wine every day. Sometimes two but usually one.

Friday and Saturday nights I might have 3 or 4 glasses each night. I feel rough the next day if I do and I sleep terribly.

@Movingonupi I don't think people are lying. I just think different threads attract different posters, depending on the title.

Trollsinmyeggbox · 29/03/2023 12:56

I've had about 6 drinks this year, all with meals when we've gone out. My partner doesn't drink so we have 0% beers and 0% gin and tonics occasionally when we're having nice meals at home or the occasions feels like it warrants something a bit more ritualistic than water/tea!

I used to be married to an alcoholic and it's really skewed my view on what is a 'normal' alcohol intake, so I tend to aim for zero!

Spybot · 29/03/2023 12:56

I'm a glass of red wine a night drinker. It takes me about a week to drink a bottle.

If I have to run the kids around to activities then I will skip that night.

Don't drink any more on a weekend than I do during the week. On special occasions I might have more but stop before a third drink as I feel drunk at that point.

Rarely drink white wine as it's too acidic for me and makes me feel rough.

TruthsAndALie · 29/03/2023 12:59

Most people won’t post on this thread, either at all or the true amount, because based on prior threads they will be pounced on and judged harshly.

stargirl1701 · 29/03/2023 13:04

I am a weekend drinker. I switched to gin over wine in the last few years. I have one or two and then switch to alcohol free. Once I have the first, I don't notice the others being alcohol free. No hang overs.

CheerstoUs · 29/03/2023 12:24

Your replies have genuinely really got me thinking.

@CheerstoUs

what are you thinking now?

I'm now mid 50's. Alcohol no longer makes me happy/giggly/feel like dancing, it just makes me feel tired! (More tired🙄). I don't get 'drunk' before I get very tired or feel a bit sick. So drinking to get drunk/have fun is just no longer an option. I do enjoy a nice glass of wine or a spirit & mixer, beer on a hot day. So I do still drink alcohol, but I don't 'drink' for drinks sake.

the link with breast cancer (in particular) scares me a bit, so that affects my decision whether to have a drink or not (doesn't stop me, just part of the decision) & I sleep badly anyway, but I am going to pay attention to whether it's worse the nights I have had alcohol or not. And if it does that won't make me stop drinking alcohol totally even, but will be a factor I take into consideration.

I have no problem not drinking though, so I'm happy with that.

WhoDatWhoDere · 29/03/2023 13:09

I'd class myself as a non drinker.

But every so often I will have 1 ameretto and coke on a Friday night. Maybe two/ three times a year.

Chaseandrace · 29/03/2023 13:10

Little and often, probably twice a month on the weekend unless we have more plans

WhoDatWhoDere · 29/03/2023 13:10

I wish I liked drinking. I feel boring sometimes but I just don't.

WhyDoesItAlways · 29/03/2023 13:17

Binge. 2-3 times a year. Always a night out, never at home or wedding.

Esssa · 29/03/2023 13:18

Occasional drinker though I've been pregnant or cosleeping for the last few years so not even that. I'd have a beer or bitter shandy at a BBQ or a glass of wine with a Sunday roast (which doesn't happen very often!). Christmas is the main one for me though. Bailey's and baraquitos and very boozy trifle.

TheProvincialLady · 29/03/2023 13:18

Normally I drink a small glass (125ml) or max two of wine or a G&T once or twice during the week, plus max 3 of the same on a Friday or Saturday. Occasionally more. At Christmas quite a bit more.

I gave up alcohol for lent which is fine, but I don’t feel any better or healthier for it. I don’t crave it either. I lead a generally healthy lifestyle. If anything it has shown me that I am perfectly ok with the level of alcohol I drink, which is a good thing.

CheerstoUs · 29/03/2023 13:23

@MarchMadness23 well firstly that I drink more than average (which I probably already knew) but also it's got me asking, why did I start the thread in the first place? Because I know I drink too much and want confirmation or did I just want people to come on and say they drank as much or more and so I would feel less guilty and could just crack on.

I honestly don't know.

Try to have 3 wine free nights during the week.
Thursday evening I usually have a glass.
Friday, Saturday and Sunday I will do 2 bottles over the 3 nights.

ChocSaltyBalls · 29/03/2023 13:32

No one should be judged for drinking. If you are happy with your relationship with alcohol, crack on. If not, you are not weak, lacking in moral fibre, a bad person, or anything else. Alcohol is an addictive, widely available and normalised substance and it’s way, way too easy to slide into an unhealthy relationship with it. And if you want to change, you can
