What kind of drinker are you?

Hi,

Just interested really.

I'm a weekend drinker, who knows they drink more than the RWA and who occasionally toys with the idea of going teetotal....but then comes Friday again 😬

I will drink in the week too if it's a special occasion/social event/holiday/Christmas etc, but I did used to drink most days regardless of what kind of day it was. Only a glass or two on week nights, but more at the weekends. An improvement I guess 🤷‍♀️

Still, overall I'd say I drink a little too much and I'm in two minds whether to quit. Part of me thinks it's OK because I don't allow myself many other treats and have a healthy diet otherwise, don't smoke, life's too short etc, but then the other part thinks just stop. It's never going to be good for me.

How about you? What kind of drinker are you and are you happy about it?

I have a couple of glasses of wine every now and then - say once or twice a month. Then very occasionally, maybe once a year, I get really drunk and throw up Blush

Helpel · 28/03/2023 21:59

I try not to drink anything Monday to Thursday but normally crack and have a glass of wine with dinner on either Wednesday or Thursday (3 units) Friday and Saturday anything between half a bottle and a whole bottle of wine depending on what we're doing (between 10-20 units). Sunday another half bottle of wine (5 units) making and eating a Sunday roast or at a pub garden on a walk in the summer. So yeah regularly drink over the recommended amount (between 18-28 units per week) but am rarely drunk and feel hard done by that it's so easy to go over 😂as you can see I count my units religiously but it doesn't seem to stop me consuming them! I am always trying to limit intake for cancer causing reasons.

Cosycover · 28/03/2023 21:59

I'm a binge drinker I suppose.

Can go months without one but when I have a night planned I drink alllllll the drinks.

Abouttimemum · 28/03/2023 22:02

I’m a take it or leave it sort of person, in that I never drink at home and will drink socially if it’s arranged essentially as a meet up to drink and catch up (with friends for example) or at weddings, but I’m not averse to driving and not drinking if it’s even marginally inconvenient for me to get to 😂 basically, I wouldn’t be bothered if I never drank again. Definitely wouldn’t miss it. I feel like an outlier in my social group, who are all big drinkers.

DH has a bottle of wine a week and sometimes a couple of pints at the weekend. He definitely enjoys drinking more than I do though.

rockingbird · 28/03/2023 22:04

I never used to drink much, social drinks every once in a while after work until I had the children. Then nothing for years.. then the sh*t hit the fan and I drank to block it all out having one glass of wine ended up being a bottle a night until last august I quit and became alcohol free. It's was scary that I always had an excuse to drink and knew it's was risky so had to stop. I couldn't moderate and started having black out's hence my complete ban on the stuff. It's been a game changer for me.

WalkAwaySugarbear · 28/03/2023 22:07

Weekend drinker only, 2 glasses of wine or 3 on a Friday and Saturday. Although I'm stopping now whilst I'm on a health programme.

Redminionpenguin · 28/03/2023 22:12

I'm not teetotal however my last drink was in May for a family celebration. I'll drink on holiday perhaps couple glasses of wine with a meal but then might not drink for 6-12 months. I can take it or leave it.

Soproudoflionesses · 28/03/2023 22:18

Sound like my nan but l have a baileys or two at Christmas.
I like the idea of drinking more than the actual drink

7spanishangels · 28/03/2023 22:23

I was always once in the blue moon drinker. But in the last year I’ve lost my son my husband and my mum. I’m now drinking a bottle of wine a night. I know I have a problem but I really don’t care

Vintagecreamandcottagepie · 28/03/2023 22:32

@7spanishangels so sorry

I have half a bottle every night (red), occasionally 3/4 of a bottle.

It is what it is.

Surprised nobody else is admitting to more on a thread about alcohol!

Keeween · 28/03/2023 22:33

I seem to go through phases. I’m always up for a beer, or 8, on a night out and I nearly always order alcohol with a meal while out, but at home, I can vary from never really drinking or having a couple of glasses of an evening at the weekend. I drank a bottle of wine Saturday night, curled up on the sofa with the dogs while I watched Snatch but last weekend I drank nothing, there’s not much of a pattern.
I have, in the past, been a very heavy drinker, to the point I had to have a serious word with myself really. I believe now that a lot of that was centred around the relationship I was in at the time, it was abusive and controlling and I was desperately unhappy. I took responsibility and changed every aspect of my life that wasn’t okay and I’ve not been a drinker like that since. My tolerance was scarily high at the time, I’m glad that’s behind me.

7spanishangels · 28/03/2023 22:43

@Vintagecreamandcottagepie I agree I thought people would be more honest and thank you

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 28/03/2023 22:45

I don’t drink in the week, but I usually do on Friday and Saturday nights and social occasions. At home DH and I will share a bottle of something (fizz usually), with one-third DH and two-thirds me, per weekend night. Sometimes we’ll have more, or have a gin and tonic first and then wine.

However, when I do something social (maybe 3-4 times a month), I drink a lot more. Most of my friends do too. My family are big drinkers too so whenever I see them I get trolleyed. So overall I’m not sure where I stand. On the good side is having Sun-Thurs off most weeks, but on the bad side is drinking a lot for fun. I have no intention of giving up or particularly cutting down, either!

BogRollBOGOF · 28/03/2023 22:51

Sporadic lightweight.

I can go weeks without anything, then fancy a random tipple. Except on holiday/ Christmas when I'll drink more frequently. I rarely drink more than a couple as I CBA to have a hangover and it irritates my digestive system. I'm pretty good at stopping when I'm feeling smiley and switching to soft drinks.

Probably quite an uncommon level of drinking, but it's a good place to be.

iamrageohtheresakitty · 28/03/2023 22:57

It doesn't make sense to talk about alcohol alone, without talking about your full lifestyle.
I drink too much, for sure, but I am incredibly fit and a very healthy weight - I balance my drinking.
Posters could judge you by saying they drink nothing, but they could be obese and immobile.

greenqueen22 · 28/03/2023 22:58

Very similar to you op. Big weekend drinker, look forward to a bottle of wine all week and will take great enjoyment in cracking it open and demolishing the whole bottle on a Saturday night. Then I sleep badly, wake up jaded on Sunday morning and wonder why I do it. Rinse repeat. I've started having half a bottle on a Saturday and the rest with Sunday lunch. It doesn't lead to the inevitable hangover.

Also I might have a gin and tonic during the week if I fancy it or a glass of wine if I'm out for a lunch etc.

I like drinking. I like the feeling of being relaxed and tipsy. But I've gone through phases in my life where I've drank to excess (I got particularly bad during lockdown) and I also used to be a really bad binge drinker on nights out in my younger days. Showed myself up lots of times. I'm glad those days are over but I still enjoy my wine.

Yellowdays · 28/03/2023 23:01

Light. 187ml mini bottle most Friday nights. Not usually otherwise.

sequincardi · 28/03/2023 23:08

Binge
Don't drink for weeks on end then have 12 in one night

HangingOver · 28/03/2023 23:10

I'm just leaving this here. Not being judgey but I used to drink a lot and I didn't know

"Many people, including women, are not aware that breast cancer is the most common cancer caused by alcohol among women globally. People need to know that by reducing alcohol consumption they can reduce their risk of getting cancer. It doesn’t matter what type, quality or price alcohol is,” says Dr Marilys Corbex, Senior Technical Officer for Noncommunicable Diseases at WHO/Europe

Simply reducing alcohol consumption can greatly reduce the risks, says WHO/EuropeCopenhagen, 20 October 2021Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer type in the WHO European Region, with 1579 women diagnosed every day.

RoseMartha · 28/03/2023 23:47

Non drinker due to alcohol intolerance. Never drank loads before I developed it but I have to be very careful it is not in food also.

MistySkiesAreGone · 29/03/2023 05:16

I last had one in early Feb. Surprise myself with how little I feel over it and I was your typical weekend drinker for years. It has taken about 10 years to get to this point though. Sure I can appreciate it but I just cba with feeling sluggish and the empty calories.

YouJustDoYou · 29/03/2023 05:53

I drink pretty much every night. I have done for years. It's not good.

Shoxfordian · 29/03/2023 06:07

I drink mostly at weekends with dh but we can overdo it when we have a bit of a session. I like drinking, just not the hangovers. In the week, I often don’t bother drinking at all even if in a pub or out.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 29/03/2023 07:05

Binge, with no 'off switch'.

I don't drink regularly, don't derive any pleasure from drinking small amounts at home so I barely ever have alcohol in the house, but I do enjoy socialising and I enjoy getting drunk and being drunk. I've never understood the purpose of recreational alcohol if it's not to get drunk, because drinking small amounts does absolutely nothing for me. It's unsatisfying, has no noticeable effect, and I don't get a craving for 'one glass' or 'one bottle of beer'.

If I decide I'm going to drink, I'll do so until I decide I've had enough, the pubs are closed, or I run out of opportunity, and if that means getting blind drunk so be it. I couldn't care less about health implications or what anyone else thinks about my relationship with alcohol. It's none of their business.

Greenolivetrees · 29/03/2023 11:54

2-3 glasses of red wine per year. I don't care for it and it makes me feel tired.

Chocolate on the other hand....
