How much did you pay towards your child's wedding?

One of my children is getting married and this is a first for me. I am going to offer money towards it, and wondered how much. Me and her father are not together. I know many people will say, it depends on what you can afford, but I'm just trying to gauge what would be the norm, as I have no idea what her Dad will offer, nor the grooms parents. Cost of wedding is Circa £11k. Taking place Spring 2025, so plenty of time to save.

My dad paid for all of the major things which was about £20k in total.

TattiePants · 26/03/2023 19:09

My DM, DF (divorced) & DMIL each gave us £3k (no idea if it was a coincidence or if they discussed between them). My DM bought my wedding dress in addition to that.

inky1991 · 26/03/2023 19:13

My Mum gave us 2k and my Dad 5k.
In-laws nothing, but they did buy our flights (got married abroad). In-laws aren't as comfortably off as my parents though.

Also, my parents aren't together

Most pps here sound really entitled op. If they want to have a party, pay for it themselves

We gave a third towards DS wedding - it was three months after we’d given them £30,000 for the deposit on the house!

DS getting married summer 2024. Current wedding cost is also £11,000 for venue and food . I’ve given £5,000 and his fiancées mum has too. Because I lost my parents already, I’d saved some of the inheritance for this.

I’m not a fan of spending a lot on weddings, it’s just one day, but I guess it’s their choice. I’d rather the money went on something more useful. My own wedding cost £600 back in the day, upstairs in a pub!

Meandfour · 26/03/2023 20:58

My parents bought my dress. My MIL who is very good with flower arranging did my bridesmaids bouquets and buttonholes and corsages.
We didn’t expect anything from either set of parents and didn’t ask for anything but were very, very grateful for both contributions.

shivawn · 26/03/2023 21:04

We didn't get or want any contribution from parents. We had a big wedding and paid for it ourselves. We are far better off than either of our sets of parents so wouldn't even consider accepting money from them.

Kenworthington · 26/03/2023 21:17

My ds is getting Married this year.we are paying for all of it. Future in laws are not contributing anything. I’m not saying how much it is. But it’s a LOT 😬

Autienotnautie · 26/03/2023 21:21

When I married ex dh my parents gave us 3k and exdh about £500.

When I married dh ils gave us £4500 and my parents £1500.

I hope to give dds 5k each

AnonymousArabella · 26/03/2023 21:24

My parents paid for the whole thing 15 years ago. I think it was around 30k.

In-laws gave us 5k as a wedding gift.

But it is such a piece of string question. Don’t give more than you feel comfortable giving, or can give without resenting any of it.

Northernlurker · 26/03/2023 21:26

We paid for most of it, our choice and we could afford it. Was about 17k but a big wedding, Dd lived with us until she married so that felt right, she also went to uni locally so cost us only her keep for those years. Our old dd had 6 yrs of parental contribution (medic) so we reckoned we were about even. Grooms parents paid for photos, suits, honeymoon.

spidereggs · 26/03/2023 21:32

Hmmmm.

I would hope I could sit down with DD and discuss a plan.

What does she need?

11k for the wedding.

How much is she paying?

Could I lay for a lovely honeymoon instead. Or a house deposit. Etc etc.

I wouldn't want to start "matching people"

girljulian · 26/03/2023 21:35

Neither my parents nor my in laws gave us anything

thebestbirtheraccordingtoDD · 26/03/2023 22:10

My parents parents paid for my hair nails & lashes along with the food.
2 sets of in-laws so they paid for the car and one mil made the cake.
We paid the rest ourselves

Uurrjb · 26/03/2023 22:18

Not there yet but on reflection got married very young had small wedding my parents paid for everything, my grandparents paid for my dress
pils paid for 50 bottles of champagne (this was for drinks for nearly 10 hrs).
is it still parents of bride who have larger contribution

Uurrjb · 26/03/2023 22:21

However there was no make up artist, spray tans, nails and one bridesmaid. No fireworks

NotMeekNotObedient · 26/03/2023 22:44

Parental contribtion totaled £6k plus the cost of the dress 5 years ago.

newbiebewbie · 26/03/2023 22:49

Mine paid for everything. I think I paid for the photographer as a token haha but everything else they paid for I think it was about £12k in total but I cannot imagine being able to do that for my children!

2chocolateoranges · 26/03/2023 23:03

we got married in 2000.

inlaws paid £500 for cars
mum paid £1000 for reception and probably another £500-800 on top of that.

wedding cost £4000.

im horrified at the price of weddings now a days. Bil got married 9 years ago, wedding cost 26k and they split up after 6 years!

I said no to large sun of monies after we gave them over 20k.

Ttwinkletoes · 27/03/2023 06:38

10,000 each but we are well off -that was over 6 years ago

Lesvacances · 27/03/2023 06:42

We bought dd’s wedding dress and gave £4.5k.
She ended up with a tiny covid wedding and put the money towards moving home.

I hope to give dds 5k each

How did you parents feel about paying twice?
I’ve (half) jokingly told my dc that they only get one wedding contribution.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 27/03/2023 06:49

We paid for our own wedding - but it cost us less than £500 including my dress and DH's suit.

My parents paid for a hotel for our wedding night, and we got 5k cash towards our honeymoon. DH's parents gave us 3k cash.
