The previous thread filled up fast, so here's another one with a reasonably topical title!

The article Abbott was responding to was in The ST last week and I can see why she felt the urge to reply and address the statements therein. But she can't seem to express ideas without terrible clumsiness.

This.

I posted on another thread I thought it was worded clumsily stating racism but I also think she is a loose cannon who says things without actually considering how they'll come across. And of course to word things even badly you have to have some of the thought processes you're speaking about.

I agree she's been the victim of horrendous racism and that's NEVER ok.

But she's also been a victim of her own stupidity at times and that needs to be stopped.

She has also had significant health problems for some years and should probably have retired some time ago

Shock Almost two years ago I reported that Boris Johnson had tried to meet the Queen when he had Covid symptoms. I was told by No10 it was “completely untrue”.

Yet @AnthonySeldon and @RaymondNewell_ confirm in their new book on the former PM that it had, in fact, happened.

Notonthestairs · 23/04/2023 14:57

He was coughing so much on the phone call that the Queen struggled to understand what he was saying!

Extraordinary that he wanted to go ahead with a face to face meeting.

DuncinToffee · 23/04/2023 15:07

How was everyone's emergency alert?

Mine was a minute early, DD's a minute late, DH didn't get one.

Blossomtoes · 23/04/2023 15:09

Mine was a minute early. Frightened the living daylights out of me!

Notonthestairs · 23/04/2023 15:12

DD's was a minute early. Mine bang on time. Dog didn't stir.
DH and DS hiking 🥾 so might have startled some wildlife.

itsgettingweird · 23/04/2023 15:12

Mine was early too! Was sat waiting for it but was still unprepared as it was 2.59!

DuncinToffee · 23/04/2023 15:12

Mine was very quiet, wouldn't have noticed it if I wasn't waiting for it.

Piggywaspushed · 23/04/2023 15:14

Mine was on time and pretty loud. DH's just made a vibrating noise.

Notonthestairs · 23/04/2023 15:16

Apparently they sent the message a minute early. It only went to 4G & 5G devices.

LexMitior · 23/04/2023 15:21

Woke the cat who looked annoyed

pointythings · 23/04/2023 15:46

Minute early here, I was expecting something more impressive to be honest.

I was chatting to my cat sitter for the summer so not enough of an impact.

🧵 "I interviewed a Home Office asylum decision-maker

He says there will be an "exodus" of staff if the Illegal Migration Bill passes in its current state, because they fear being forced to act unlawfully"

"The attrition rate is already at 46% and the Home Office has been scrambling to recruit

The official says staff are angry at the home secretary for accusing them of working too slowly when they are hampered by lost documents, rapidly changing policies and “inefficient” processes"

That’s interesting @Notonthestairs. I caught a caller on the radio earlier saying how civil servants should just do as they’re told and I think that’s probably a common view.

We’ve already established historically that ‘I was just following orders’ is no defence against participating in wrong doing.

jgw1 · 23/04/2023 20:55

Sorry, been away for a few days.
Have I understood correctly that Raab in an effort to demonstrate that he is not a bully has angrily lashed out at all kinds of people?

LexMitior · 23/04/2023 20:56

We've come a long way from speaking truth to power; this tame civil service is why the country is partly knackered over Brexit - anyone who had a brain knew of the enormous problems it would bring.

Raab wanted rid of the ECHR in effect, so the same issue.

Or Truss with her mad budget. What would have happened if the Civil Service had not told her before it landed what a disaster it would be? She would have blamed them. They were right.

These Consetvatives are crap - children really. And so to it seems are the people who vote for them, who live in magic land.

Yes. The bar for bullying is too low. Doesn't that mean he is saying he was bullying then?

tobee · 23/04/2023 23:49

Btw I got my Severe Alert message at 14.59. And then again 20 minutes later. And then on my Apple Watch about 50 minutes later 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yes but if anyone complains that just proves they are activists and trying to stop the government and all their great plans.

So he Raab thinks its ok to bully in a specific and limited way. Why am I not surprised?

I am impressed if they have found plans the government has, because I can't say I have noticed anything more than soundbites.
Or is it activist to point out that to teach everyone maths until they are 88 will need more maths teachers?

Are you a civil servant @@jgw1 ? One of those untrustworthy activists undermining ministers?

Is it activist to point out that cutting by 25% the MoJ budget means the justice system isn't really a system any more and no Minister we can't do that because there is no money even to prosecute rapists?
