The previous thread filled up fast, so here's another one with a reasonably topical title!

And it’s William Wragg who’s outed her. Looking at his twittter feed it seems he’s had enough of the Home Secretary and her immigration and asylum policies.

Wow. Wonder if he had had a little too much Friday night refreshment when he wrote those tweets?

IClaudine · 22/04/2023 13:05

This is rather interesting...

Cornettoninja · 22/04/2023 15:21

That is interesting @IClaudine.

of course these days we have to be careful about the veracity of these things but I’ll do my bit by querying it with anyone I can.

‘You can’t prove anything’ she told us.

Always the retort of the innocent. 😂

Notonthestairs · 22/04/2023 16:46

No it's not Margaret from Fareham -

'Nobody would accuse me - I believe - of abusive or abrasive behaviour.'

Amber in Suffolk called @mattfrei to share her views after Dominic Raab's resignation - turns out it was the former Home Secretary @AmberRuddUK!

Rudd rightfully suggesting that it is possible to lead without using "abrasive" techniques.

I don't think Wragg is by any means a lone voice. He is standing down at the next GE so I suspect he feels that he is able to speak out. But I think many ON Tory's just get drowned out by the Andersons/Gullis/JRMs of the party. Listened to the Newsagents interview with Caroline Nokes - & heaven knows we don't see eye to eye on a whole range of issues but she was interesting & engaged and I did agree with what she had to say on culture wars.

RIP Barry Humphries

Brilliant.

Notonthestairs · 22/04/2023 19:16

He saw straight through Johnson.

Diane Abbott's letter. What the heck?

Diane Abbott's letter. What the heck?

Yes I was just reading that. Bloody awful. As for pretending it was an early draft...why even draft such nonsense in the first place? No excuse.

IClaudine · 23/04/2023 12:11

Yes. Anyway, even if it was an early draft, it clearly shows her very unpleasant thinking. She's had the whip suspended. It is good that Starmer acted very swiftly.

DuncinToffee · 23/04/2023 12:13

Abbott has Labour whip suspended

A Labour spokesperson said: “The Labour party completely condemns these comments which are deeply offensive and wrong.

“The chief whip has suspended the Labour whip from Diane Abbott pending an investigation.”

sorry xpost with iClaudine

She needs to be deselected. She's no longer fit to serve and she's a liability in a time when we desperately need a change of government.

I watched her being interviewed on GMB a few weeks ago. She's always been a bit of a loose cannon for the Labour Party.

And they are showing inter gritty and accountability by reacting quickly.

DuncinToffee · 23/04/2023 12:21

This is worrying, 'given a discretion'

twitter.com/Haggis_UK/status/1650043401826385920?s=20

Ridge- Is Suella Braverman going be given powers to ignore European courts if they try to stop deportations to Rwanda?

Oliver Dowden - She will be given a discretion....

#Ridge - Some would say that's breaking international law

Notonthestairs · 23/04/2023 12:38

He is suggesting that if the interim order occurs at the last minute Braverman can override them.

But those interim orders happen at the last minute because there is so much drag on the service - it is a byproduct of that!

Dowden isn't particularly persuasive is he?
No acknowledgement of the ever increasing backlog. If you won't staff a service to fit the need then this is what happens (see also social care, A&E & ambulances).

Notonthestairs · 23/04/2023 12:42

And we all know how braverman will use her discretion - desperate to set up a fight with ECHR.

This. She’s been a liability for some time. Hopefully she’ll stand down now and save everyone a lot of embarrassment.

AdamRyan · 23/04/2023 13:09

I don't know about what Diane Abbott said. I'd like to think it was coming from a place of focusing on the unique oppression of black people and that using "racism" as a term to describe prejudice against anyone on the basis of their heritage in effect obfuscates the nature of anti-black prejudice, which doesn't have a specific name.

I feel similarly when men complain of "sexism" about positive action focussed on women at work, for example.

She was very stupid to name Jews though. I suspect she feels the prejudice against them is described using "antisemitism" rather than racism but she should have realised it was going to come over badly.

I like to think that maybe that is what she was driving at, but I don't know. It is a very, very troubling letter and I can't understand her expressing her thoughts in that way.

AdamRyan · 23/04/2023 14:08

I also think this is right wing media gleefully seizing on any hint of antisemitism before the local elections, as they know Labour can be harmed by those allegations.

Piggywaspushed · 23/04/2023 14:14

The article Abbott was responding to was in The ST last week and I can see why she felt the urge to reply and address the statements therein. But she can't seem to express ideas without terrible clumsiness.
