How long was your engagement?

Trying to work out whats normal as we plan.
We don’t want a traditional wedding or to book a venue and invite hundreds of people.
Likely just to elope and spend our money on a fantastic honeymoon.
Do you think a 6-9 month engagement is too short? We are young and the last thing I’d wanna do is rush things and regret not enjoying the fiancé status for longer, even if it is just a stepping stone. How long was your engagement? Thankyou :)

I always assumed an engagement was as long as it took to plan the wedding. That's the point of it I thought.

I was engaged for 6 months and it was only that long because we had to wait until the summer holidays.

Polis · 17/03/2023 20:55

Ten months. Surely, as long as you have adequate time to make arrangements for the wedding it doesn’t matter how short it is?

2chocolateoranges · 17/03/2023 20:55

We got married 5 months after we got engaged. We thought, why wait!

8wks. Had been together just over 3yrs. We had a small wedding as we both just wanted to be married.

JorisBonson · 17/03/2023 20:57

About 16 months, but because of covid. We had originally planned to get married about 10 months after we got engaged.

slamfightbrightlight · 17/03/2023 20:57

Longer than planned because we got so carried away celebrating our engagement that I got pregnant 😬 so we put it off until after baby arrived rather than rush it while pregnant.

thenightsky · 17/03/2023 20:58

4 months engaged before wedding. I was 19, he was 24. Still married 42 years later.

Plump82 · 17/03/2023 20:59

6 months to the day. We knew exactly what we wanted and we only had 11 guests so if was super easy. Plus it was during lockdown so our options were limited.

DappledThings · 17/03/2023 20:59

11 months, but only because that was the earliest the venue we wanted had a free Saturday.

How lovely ❤
Ours was 6 months and that was considered a long engagement at the time

StampOnTheGround · 17/03/2023 21:03

18 months! 😊

This for us too!

I think just do whatever is right for you both.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 17/03/2023 21:05

Five years. Way too long. I had to threaten to leave unless he actually agreed to set a date. We married four months later and got pg with twins on honeymoon Our 30th anniversary is this year.

PinkyBlossom · 17/03/2023 21:05

4 months, we had a v.small wedding

Sunsetintheeast · 17/03/2023 21:07

Enjoying the fiancé status? Er sorry what’s the status. You agree to get married, hou plan it and do it.

6 weeks for us

Paesano · 17/03/2023 21:08

3 months. No regrets. Was low stress, high joy. Everyone that mattered came.

PutinTheFuckingBasket · 17/03/2023 21:08

364 days, as the date was meaningful for us

bloodywhitecat · 17/03/2023 21:12

I think we talked about it for about six months before we married (we waited for lockdown to lift a bit), we had a small wedding (just 15 of us altogether) and a very happy 9 months of marriage. I have now been his widow for just over a year, the length of engagement is immaterial in the grand scheme of things.

Pollywoddles · 17/03/2023 21:12

10 months and that was only because we couldn’t get the date we wanted 2 months earlier.

I don’t see the point if getting engaged if you’re not going to get married.

Smarshian · 17/03/2023 21:12

About 14 months. I was studying and wanted to finish my course before the wedding.

OnTheThames · 17/03/2023 21:13

3 months. Small wedding, epic honeymoon. Didn’t take much planning and we just wanted to get hitched!
