How long was your engagement?

Trying to work out whats normal as we plan.
We don’t want a traditional wedding or to book a venue and invite hundreds of people.
Likely just to elope and spend our money on a fantastic honeymoon.
Do you think a 6-9 month engagement is too short? We are young and the last thing I’d wanna do is rush things and regret not enjoying the fiancé status for longer, even if it is just a stepping stone. How long was your engagement? Thankyou :)

11 years here Grin

MrNorrell · 17/03/2023 22:03

6 weeks, very recently. We didn't have much to organise as we just went to a Registrar's office, it was far more work trying to convince our families that I wasn't pregnant.

ButterfliesandMoths · 17/03/2023 22:03

We never officially got engaged, just assumed we'd get married at some point. It took 13 years but we got there in the end Smile

5 weeks, we had only been dating 6 months when we married!

Keeween · 17/03/2023 22:21

8 months. It was perfect, such a lovely, exciting time. We had a massive midsummer wedding and then after a couple of months, went travelling for our honeymoon. Congratulations 💐

EspeciallyDedicated · 17/03/2023 22:24

Not sure exactly (engagement consisted of talking about getting married for a few months then deciding to tell everyone and start planning so no exact date like you get with a proposal) but a bit over a year. We wanted it to be in summer but it was too short notice to organise for the same year, we were also both changing jobs and relocating so even picking a venue took ages - we're not religious and this was in the early days of licensed venues so not many options.

googledidnthelp · 17/03/2023 22:32

It will be 8 months by the time we get married

Deadringer · 17/03/2023 22:34

Nearly 3 years. But we were only 20 and saving for a house first.

Chickpea17 · 17/03/2023 22:37

10 years. 2 years after we had our daughter we decided it was time to get married. Been married 3 years in October.

Octi · 17/03/2023 22:38

We got engaged one summer and married the next.

I think anything longer than a year is v weird. 6-9 months is perfect.

Basically do it as soon as you can get everything (and everyone!) organised.

WandaWonder · 17/03/2023 22:41

As long as it took to plan the wedding really

I didnt see the point of being engaged unless there was a wedding expected others wise what is the reason to be engaged?

Smidge001 · 17/03/2023 22:49

10 weeks.

sugarspices · 17/03/2023 22:49

It will be just over 18 months. We were planning a baby and found out about the pregnancy 10 days after the engagement, so we've set the date for post-baby. It will be a large wedding with over a hundred guests so there is also a lot of planning!

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 17/03/2023 22:58

About a year I think. We we were planning a small wedding abroad so it was determined by when was a good time to get married.

mrsfeatherbottom · 17/03/2023 22:59

9 months

Nowhereelsetogo90 · 17/03/2023 23:00

Originally wedding was booked for 8 months after engagement. Covid made it 16 months though.

neighboursmustliveon · 17/03/2023 23:01

Ours was 15 months. We wanted a specific time of year which happened to be 15 months after we got engaged. We had been together about 14 months when we got engaged.

Edthehorse · 17/03/2023 23:02

Got engaged in July 2022. Needed time to get a dress from a proper shop (I'm not easy to fit!) So that meant we needed at least 9 months.

Didn't really want a late spring/summer wedding as I hate hot weather so when we found our venue we booked for September 2023.

So it will be 14 months but I agree with what others have said, it's as long as it takes to plan a wedding in my mind.

GinIronic · 17/03/2023 23:08

11 days.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 17/03/2023 23:09

22 years.

So coming up for the fifteenth anniversary in July.

HuggingtheHRT · 17/03/2023 23:12

5 months

justasking111 · 17/03/2023 23:13

Three months. But we didn't live together. Had bought a house, so we wanted to be together. Three day honeymoon in Scotland were seriously skint.

notangelinajolie · 17/03/2023 23:18

8 months. Engaged in Feb, married in Oct.

Avarua2 · 17/03/2023 23:50

7 months
Long enough

I only knew I wanted to marry him at the exact point he asked me. We'd been dating for 4 years! I wasn't in a rush to get married but once he'd asked (and I knew he was committed) then I was really very ready to marry him.

Schmutter · 17/03/2023 23:52

About 9 months. I can’t really remember.
