How long was your engagement?

Trying to work out whats normal as we plan.
We don’t want a traditional wedding or to book a venue and invite hundreds of people.
Likely just to elope and spend our money on a fantastic honeymoon.
Do you think a 6-9 month engagement is too short? We are young and the last thing I’d wanna do is rush things and regret not enjoying the fiancé status for longer, even if it is just a stepping stone. How long was your engagement? Thankyou :)

First wedding engaged in the October married in the July.

Second wedding will be three years from engagement to wedding.

Germolenequeen · 17/03/2023 21:18

Engaged on 4/12/87- my 25th birthday - married on 4/6/88 so six months engagement 💗

Still married 💖

Lenax · 17/03/2023 21:21

Together for 7 years when we got engaged and got married after 1 year & 3 months. But immediately after being engaged the love bubble was so intense I would have gotten married within 2 weeks if we had the money

Four months which was amazingly quick thinking back. It was at a London hotel, 200 guests for five course dinner with family and friends travelling from across the world. My godfather (who paid) did most of the arrangements.

Norugratsatall · 17/03/2023 21:22

16 months. Been married for 32 years now. 😊

Shinyandnew1 · 17/03/2023 21:22

6 months here :)

Panda368 · 17/03/2023 21:23

Coming up to 4 years this spring?

Engaged 2019, planned on the following summer but didn’t get round to booking anything. Then Covid happened so planned to book for summer 2021, then got a bit nervous with all the winter lockdowns, then we had another baby and bought another house in 2021. I expect we will eventually manage it… someday..

Twochildrenpluspointfour · 17/03/2023 21:23

4 months. Didn't see the point in a long engagement.

Dragonsandcats · 17/03/2023 21:23

1 year. I was also studying and wanted to complete it first.

Serena1977 · 17/03/2023 21:24

7 months

ScoopT · 17/03/2023 21:25

2 years to allow us to save

TurnipSurprise · 17/03/2023 21:25

We get married 2 years after we got engaged, it is taking us that long to save up. DH is a bit of a groomzilla and wants a big hoo ha. I would have been happy running away the two of us.

ScoopT · 17/03/2023 21:26

I'm so sorry @bloodywhitecat life can be such a prick.

Alarae · 17/03/2023 21:26

Two years. We bought a house in between engagement and wedding though as thought that was the better financial decision Grin

anerki101 · 17/03/2023 21:26

5 years and counting 🤣 I can't be arsed with it anymore

weegiemum · 17/03/2023 21:27

Ours was waaaaaay too long but we were young and it was almost 30 years ago so wedding was organised and paid for by my parents. We were engaged for 23 months! Engaged at 22, married at 24 (both same ages).

It genuinely took that long for it all to be sorted. I am in awe of friends who did it in 8 weeks.

We often say if we were doing it over again it would be smaller and much quicker! But in the end it was a fantastic day and we loved it, and to pay was very generous.

bluebellls · 17/03/2023 21:27

Hugs @bloodywhitecat, that is truly terrible. You are in my thoughts.

3 years and counting. No date set yet just haven't got round to it. Not saving for a big wedding in fact it'll probably just be quick to get the paperwork done before buying a house next year.

Newtrix · 17/03/2023 21:27

17 months, got engaged in the October and wanted either an Oct 18 or March 19 wedding and decided on March.

mysparkleismissing · 17/03/2023 21:27

Engaged in Dec 17.
Married in July 18!

A BUSY few months!!

bloodywhitecat · 17/03/2023 21:12

I think we talked about it for about six months before we married (we waited for lockdown to lift a bit), we had a small wedding (just 15 of us altogether) and a very happy 9 months of marriage. I have now been his widow for just over a year, the length of engagement is immaterial in the grand scheme of things.

I'm so sorry xx

HoobleDooble · 17/03/2023 21:28

First one 7 years before I gave up and moved on, second one about 8 months, been married 15 years.

BingoBonus · 17/03/2023 21:32

Six months. We had only been together 8 weeks! Seems crazy now looking back, but that was 19 years ago and no regrets.

BridieConvert · 17/03/2023 21:32

2 years to the day. Both my mum and sister were planning weddings the year we got engaged so we waited until they were out the way to start planning or it probably would've been quicker.
We were 23/24

Verylongtime · 17/03/2023 21:32

About 17 years. Then a quick wedding at the register office, just us and our daughters as witnesses.
