Hi,

Just that really. How important to you is your job title? Is it more important to you than salary or would you always follow the 💰💰💰

Follow the money!

Starflecked · 15/03/2023 10:54

Hell yeah, more money for (presumably) less responsibility? You can still ensure you're building on skills and experiences ready for your next role whatever the title.

Ceryneianhind · 15/03/2023 10:55

money every time

Mumsafan · 15/03/2023 10:55

Go for the money.

SaltyGod · 15/03/2023 11:05

Money.

Title doesn't mean much in my experience. Money tells you what they think you're worth, titles are free and mostly nonsense.

I've dropped titles for interesting roles and it's always been a good move in my experience

PoundsoverTitle · 15/03/2023 11:05

But what if current salary is already very good? Could taking a lower title affect your career progression?

duckydoo234 · 15/03/2023 11:05

More money and less responsibility? Sounds like win win to me.

winelove · 15/03/2023 11:07

Take the money!

PoundsoverTitle · 15/03/2023 11:10

@duckydoo234 it's not really less responsibility, just different.

PoundsoverTitle · 15/03/2023 11:10

@SaltyGod I get what you're saying.

I couldn't give a shit what people call me for my job title. People have so many wanky inflated job titles anyway that it doesn't matter. Go for the money.

purplevipersgrass · 15/03/2023 11:12

What are the titles involved? Are you going from Vice Principle of whatever (which sounds lofty but is actually ten a penny) to Head of or Manager? Is that the kind of thing you mean?

Because those titles mean very little and what would be important to future employers is the role, the budget, the number of people you manage etc.

Back in the last century I can remember once, in a small company that seemed to be floundering, being offered a better job title instead of a raise.

in the real world, you go with your experience

are you able to share what your job title is now, and what it would be changing to?

SnackyOnassis · 15/03/2023 11:14

I'm pretty confident that many people inflate or embellish their job titles on their CV/LinkedIn anyway so I wouldn't worry about the job title at all - take the money!

Hapoydayz · 15/03/2023 11:15

Take the money!

waltzingparrot · 15/03/2023 11:20

Can you negotiate on the title if you don't think it reflects the level you'd be working at. I did once and they agreed to change it. Suggest a title to them you'd be happy with.

JustFrustrated · 15/03/2023 11:20

Money.

Titles mean nothing.

In my last job role, it was determined by the company so you'd have

Sales rep
Territory manager
Business development manager
Field sales experience specialist.

All did exactly the same thing. No difference.

And none were indicative of what the role was.

SleepingisanArt · 15/03/2023 11:21

Money every time. I once had daily contact with a company where everyone was 'manager' - even the receptionist who answered the phone. Believe me, most of these people were not managers and couldn't have managed their way out of a paper bag..... Titles are getting a bit daft.....

NowAAT · 15/03/2023 11:23

Who cares about the title. Money is money. Ill take the money please.

kirinm · 15/03/2023 11:24

I accepted a job with more money but the same title. The title is really important to me - given the stage of my career and experience- so I was very reluctant to accept the offer. It actually took me about 2 months to accept it after speaking to two separate senior people at the new place.

I'm still not 100% sure I've made the right decision because the lack of recognition just sets a bad tone from the outset but ultimately money won out. I'll give things a go but I'm also happy to leave if the promotion prospects don't materialise.

SausagePourHomme · 15/03/2023 11:24

Can you ask the to give you the title bump too? Might as well ask

GoldDuster · 15/03/2023 11:27

I go to work for money, not because of what they call me when I get there. Take the money.

PoundsoverTitle · 15/03/2023 11:28

@waltzingparrot that's a possibility, yes.

OP posts:
MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 15/03/2023 11:29

Can you negotiate on the title, OP? I have had prospective employees do this, and have been happy to accommodate (within reason!).

Beaverbridge · 15/03/2023 11:30

Money, who cares about titles.
