How long is a reasonable shower?

DD is spending ages in the shower each night. Basically I'm worried we can't afford it, it's getting beyond a joke.
I think 10 minutes max should be enough. DH reckons 5 - which I think is doable and what I aim for - but I don't think she will manage this unless I stand there and personally shower her.

I'm going to start setting a timer! What do you reckon is fair?

No need to discuss your DC's shower habits. A simple number of minutes will suffice!

How long is she showering for and how old is she?

ggbbnn1 · 14/03/2023 17:24

About 15/20 if washing hair 🤷🏽‍♀️

ApolloandDaphne · 14/03/2023 17:25

Also, if you are worried about bills have you lowered the temp in your house? She might be lingering to keep warm?

Nightly? 10 mins is thoroughly reasonable

Sweetladyjane · 14/03/2023 17:28

I would say 15 mins if she has long hair and is washing it. I have very short hair and am in and out in 5 mins, I have a bath once a week to shave my legs (I’m very shortsighted and can’t see in the shower to do it).

PacificallyRequested · 14/03/2023 17:28

Up to 20 minutes totally reasonable, especially if washing hair/shaving legs.

GBoucher · 14/03/2023 17:28

10 if washing hair (but I have short hair, used to be 15-20 when I had long hair), 5 if shower cap.

Xrays · 14/03/2023 17:28

10 mins is more than enough- I do about that and I wash my hair, comb through conditioner and wash my face etc.

Findyourneutralspace · 14/03/2023 17:29

I can be 15 mins if washing hair and shaving legs etc, but otherwise 5-10 mins is fine. DS2 would be in there an hour if I didn’t go and knock on the door

Pinkypurplecloud · 14/03/2023 17:30

Ten minutes is plenty of time to wash body and hair and shave legs etc unless she is Rapunzel. She’s either faffing or she’s warm and doesn’t want to get out again.

megletthesecond · 14/03/2023 17:31

About 10 minutes.
Maybe a bit more if it's a crappy electric shower. Bit less if it's a beast of a power shower.

MushMonster · 14/03/2023 17:31

So, 5 min for a shower only, up to 10 min for washing hair and conditioninh.
Rest is just standing there enjoying the warm water.
I know this... I used to take 30 minutes to shower lol.
But... if I am shaving my legs, then 20 to 30 min still.

WinterMusings · 14/03/2023 17:33

How old is she?

a long hot shower is a fab way to wind down/relax.

but if you can't afford it, you can't afford it.

have you checked how much it's actually costing?

is it on gas mains or an electric one?

pawz · 14/03/2023 17:34

10-20 minutes depending how glossy and smooth I want to emerge!

Orcubed · 14/03/2023 17:34

A leg shave and hair wash shower is about 15 minutes for me but water isn’t on the whole time. I love standing under hot water and could easily stand there for half an hour just thinking or completely zoned out if I let myself! Now I have an electric blanket and promise myself I can get under that for a bit if I don’t linger in the shower!

gogohmm · 14/03/2023 17:37

Can't believe I'm seeing 15/20 mins! 5 mins is plenty. If i want to deep condition my hair (I do it weekly takes 5 mins) I use that time to shave. So that day it's about 6.5 mins, but the remaining days 3-4 mins.

gogohmm · 14/03/2023 17:38

If you want to soak, have a bath

Keroppi · 14/03/2023 17:38

only 5 mins is crazy to me! What about detangling, exfoliating, scrubbing, shaving, leave in conditioners etc?! Can't you just make her turn the water off when conditioning and shaving etc then back on when needed

Keepupandout · 14/03/2023 17:39

To wash my very long hair and shave legs... 5 mins usually, 10 mins at the most. I am blessed with good water pressure.

Unless you have mobility issues or very low water pressure, I don't know what you're doing in there for 15 or 20 minutes except wasting water.

Bluebellsand · 14/03/2023 17:40

What type of hair does she have? And the amount and length of hair also matters.

moppatoppa · 14/03/2023 17:40

15 minutes here to wash everywhere - I do my hair twice

20 minutes if I'm conditioning

FlightyFoxing · 14/03/2023 17:42

If I'm washing and conditioning my hair, and shaving my legs, it takes me about 20 mins.

QueenMabs · 14/03/2023 17:43

I agree with @gogohmm

Every morning 4 mins is plenty for a quick shower and hair hair wash. I struggle to sati in long enough to let the conditioner sink in. Weekly bath for epilating, face mask /hair deep condition.

Buy a shower timer. 5 mins I plenty!

Maybe say moring if showers from now on the speed up the proceeding.

Reddahlias · 14/03/2023 17:43

I wash my hair 5 minutes under the shower. I can probably use conditioner too in that time!

I cannot believe that it would take anyone 20 mins Shock

RandomUsernameHere · 14/03/2023 17:45

3 minutes if not washing hair, 6 minutes if washing it (I have very long hair). Our shower has a timer on it so I'm very aware of how long I take!
