How long is a reasonable shower?

DD is spending ages in the shower each night. Basically I'm worried we can't afford it, it's getting beyond a joke.
I think 10 minutes max should be enough. DH reckons 5 - which I think is doable and what I aim for - but I don't think she will manage this unless I stand there and personally shower her.

I'm going to start setting a timer! What do you reckon is fair?

No need to discuss your DC's shower habits. A simple number of minutes will suffice!

5 minutes including washing hair.

3 if not.

Maybe 7 if shaving but that doesn't happen very often

TheFormidableMrsC · 14/03/2023 20:34

My DD used to stand in it for 40 mins or longer and I had to put a stop to it. She's got very long hair and I appreciate it takes more time but not that long! I try and do it in 5 mins. When I want to wash my hair and also shave, I have a fairly shallow bath and use the hand held attachment for my hair. I can't shave in the shower. I definitely use less water that way.

Agreed.

All the water saving timers suggest 4 minutes. We've started using one to stop the boys spending hours just sitting there.
We're not super obsessed but bedtime is so much quicker and we're saving energy

I would happily get in debt rather than fucking harangue someone over a matter of minutes in the shower. And I'm a single parent ina low paid job. As for bathroom capacity... FFS! People are faux pearl clutching over 15 minutes in this thread. Get a grip.

Thank fuck! I thought I’d entered the twilight zone

OneFrenchEgg · 14/03/2023 21:03

We have gas for water and heating and turn it on for 2 hours in the morning - that allows five people each a five min shower. Any more and the last person gets cold water.

evemillbank · 14/03/2023 21:06

20 minutes

Luredbyapomegranate · 14/03/2023 21:07

10 mins plenty. Get one of those timer things that turns it off for a bit after

TheOrigRights · 14/03/2023 21:37

I timed myself earlier. Hair wash and condition. 7 mins. I recently upgraded my bathroom and the shower is powerful so I'm conscious of how much we're using and the cost. DS takes about 3 but sometimes showers twice a day. If I wasn't washing my hair I'd only be a few mins.

mynewusername2023 · 14/03/2023 21:46

I'd probably just be glad my kid was spending that much time getting clean.

Blurpy · 14/03/2023 21:53

3-4 minutes once or twice a week.

Get a shower timer. 25 minutes is obscenely wasteful.

FunnysInLaJardin · 14/03/2023 22:01

We are on a tight tank and so water usage is very much at the forefront! About 10 mins max for 17 yo DS1 who showers everyday. After 15 we go and bang on the door!

None of the rest of us go above 10 mins

Badbudgeter · 14/03/2023 22:02

I spend a good 15 -20 minutes in the shower if washing my hair. Dc are the same. My solution is actually a cheap gym membership at the local pool/ gym. It’s in a school and we are there three times a week for activities anyway. Tack on a weekend swim and we just have short non hair washing showers at home. I reckon it saves a fortune on water bill.

Thursa · 14/03/2023 22:07

5-10 minutes. My non bill paying kids get in and forget to come back out.

WunWun · 14/03/2023 19:55

I couldn't give a flying fuck how long my daughter showers for.

I'm so glad I've never lived with any kind of "30 seconds is more than enough!" dullard!

You might think differently without mains drains and a tight tank to empty every month.

We even have a bowl in our sink and chuck dirty water outside. As little goes into the tank as possible as not only does it cost money, it floods sewage everywhere if it gets too full and we can't use the toilets, sinks etc.

Puts a very different complexion on water usage!

bigbluebus · 14/03/2023 22:11

No need to have the water running all the time if waiting for conditioner to do it's stuff or shaving legs/pits (although I see you say your DD isn't doing any of that OP).
DS has an electric shower in his bathroom. Our Smart Meter has focused our minds on how much his long showers cost - especially as sometimes it's twice a day if he exercises in the evening. I've told him that 5 minutes is more than enough to wet hair, shampoo, rinse hair, wash body and rinse.

Rebel2 · 14/03/2023 22:28

I wash my hair separately so no idea on that and only shave legs in the bath!
Takes me about 10 mins to shower but that's a proper wash as in everything from in between toes to ears and sometimes an exfoliating scrub

Turquoisa80 · 14/03/2023 22:35

4-5 mins not washing hair, 8mins if washing hair. It's too expensive go any longer

Mojitomogul · 14/03/2023 22:35

Quick shower in the morning about five mins. If hair wash about ten mins. But I turn it off to lather up with shower gel, and turn the water off in-between to shampoo, condition hair or shave legs. So the water is only really on max two mins at a time.
We also do as a PP does, and try to time hair wash days with a gym visit, so have the longer shower there!

sunshineandshowers40 · 14/03/2023 22:41

10-15 minutes should be long enough even when washing hair. I'm pleased when mine get in the shower so don't mind how long they take, just wish the would pull the shower curtain across and put the bath mat down!

HeavenIsAHalfpipe · 14/03/2023 22:46

It takes me 10-11 minutes when washing my hair. (3 times a week.) And my first shower of the day takes about 7-8 minutes. If I have a showers during the day - like when I have one after a walk, doing the garden, or doing housework, it lasts 4-5 minutes. I can't comprehend having 20-25 minute showers like some posters. That's a LONG time to be stood in the shower!

MamaDollyorJesus · 14/03/2023 22:48

Do people really turn the shower off & on while they're lathering shampoo/washing body?

What a palaver... I'd rather spend the £20 a month & have a decent shower without that level of faff!

<just waiting on someone coming on to tell us they bathe in the local stream to save money/water>

HeavenIsAHalfpipe · 14/03/2023 22:55

That is a new level of batshit isn't it? Probably turn half the radiators in their house that has gas central heating too, and think it saves them money! 😆

greenacrylicpaint · 15/03/2023 06:29

in the summer, yes.
we had drought & hosepipe ban where we are last summer.
also don't use conditioner in the shower to save time. use leave-in stuff instead.
