How long is a reasonable shower?

DD is spending ages in the shower each night. Basically I'm worried we can't afford it, it's getting beyond a joke.
I think 10 minutes max should be enough. DH reckons 5 - which I think is doable and what I aim for - but I don't think she will manage this unless I stand there and personally shower her.

I'm going to start setting a timer! What do you reckon is fair?

No need to discuss your DC's shower habits. A simple number of minutes will suffice!

Long, thick hair and a shower where I’m washing and conditioning it (so 3 times a week) plus leg etc shaving - 20 mins.

5-10 mins otherwise.

welshweasel · 14/03/2023 17:51

2-3 minutes if not washing hair, 5 mins tops if washing hair and shaving legs. Any more than 10 minutes is ridiculous.

GoldilocksIsALittleSod · 14/03/2023 17:51

15-20 mins if washing hair/shaving etc.
I'd love the mythical 2 min shower but I can't fathom how anyone gets a decent wash in that time!

No way I can have a shower in 5 mins.
20 mins is when I wash my hair and take my time to enjoy the whole process.

Before coming down on your dd fir long showers, have you looked at how much her ‘long’ shower cost? We have a smart meter and one if those digital box that tells us our exact consumption.
it might be much less than you think it is.

BarbaraofSeville · 14/03/2023 17:53

How long is she in there if its so much more than 10 minutes to be 'beyond a joke'? I would have thought 10 minutes was plenty even if she's washing hair and shaving legs, armpits etc.

Does she not care about the environment? I'm always reading about these teens who blame their 40 something parents for destroying the planet but a lot of them seem to have some very wasteful habits as far as I can see.

Keroppi · 14/03/2023 17:53

Missed that it was every night! Anything over 15 min everynight is too much. Hair wash day takes longer for me.

Phoebo · 14/03/2023 17:53

I think 15? But I think 20 is a decent one, and I'd do more than half an hour if I was washing my hair

Megapint · 14/03/2023 17:55

15 - 20 !?. Fuck me I'd be banging on the door if someone was in my shower for that long. I used to give my kids a timer for the shower & we found 3 mins is perfect

user40816 · 14/03/2023 17:58

5 minutes for a very quick freshen up.
10 minutes for a thorough body/face wash/relax and wind down.
15-20 minutes if washing hair, depending on how knotty it is/hair length/type, etc.

LulooLemon · 14/03/2023 18:00

12 mins

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 14/03/2023 18:01

Water authority guidance says 4 mins. But 8-10 mins seems more practical if doing more than a quick freshen up.

AlltheFs · 14/03/2023 18:02

20 mins to do everything- I have long and ridiculously thick hair which needs 2 shampoos plus conditioner. That includes shaving and exfoliating. But that’s not every day.

12-15 for a hair wash shower with no extras

Just a washing body shower is less than 5 mins, probably about 3 really if I actually rush.

We don’t have a bath so long showers are my luxury equivalent but not every day. Our showers don’t cost very much though so it’s not a concern.

Eranzer · 14/03/2023 18:02

I've got long thick hair, takes me 10 mins if I'm doing a quick scrub and a hair wash

Takes me about 20 mins for a shower where I exfoliate and shave and whatnot

35 mins or so if I'm channeling Celine Dion.

Chikapu · 14/03/2023 18:03

15 mins is reasonable, a 2-3 minute shower is fucking miserable. My cat spends longer washing himself than some of you!

GandhiDeclaredWarOnYou · 14/03/2023 18:04

4 minutes for a quick shower and wash hair.
10 minutes for wash hair, put on conditioner and leave in while I shave anything that ‘needs’ shaving, rinse, and out.

Longer than 15 minutes is taking the piss.

BebbanburgIsMine · 14/03/2023 18:06

My DD usually spends about 10 minutes in the shower, I hate them so never for me.

If there's an occasion (very very rare) that I have a shower then I'm in and out in less than 5 minutes.

I've always been a bath person.

Topseyt123 · 14/03/2023 18:07

I think around 10 minutes, occasionally 15. That is about how long I am actually in the shower for although I'll be in the bathroom a bit longer because I get dressed there once dried off.

autumnboys · 14/03/2023 18:09

4-5 minutes. I bang on the door, all three of mine would be 20 minutes if I left them. Since I started encouraging them to speed up, the water bill has dropped by about £25 a month!

TheChosenTwo · 14/03/2023 18:09

I can be in and out for a basic shower and wash. Not including hair wash and shaving.
I have a nightly bath for relaxation purposes and a morning shower to freshen myself up and wake me up a bit. I can spend 30 minutes in there with a hair wash/mask/condition, shaving etc.
Dd2 seems to take about 10-15 minutes to have a shower and wash hair.
Ds more like 10. he’s just in there singing 😂
Dh is also a 10 minute showerer.
Dd1 moved out, I don’t remember her shower habits!

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 14/03/2023 18:11

I'm a five minutes kind of person. The rest of my family more like 20 mins. I can live with that - we are lucky to be able to afford it, I know. How joyless to set a timer for 3 minutes.

Oblomov23 · 14/03/2023 18:16

4 minutes is the ultimate. Dh takes 5 minutes. It only takes me a few minutes longer to wash and condition my hair. Those saying 20 minutes are off their rockers. Do you have water meters?

Trumpton · 14/03/2023 18:17

We have a megaflo shower which uses 20 litres a minute.
A bath uses about 80 litres.
Anything longer than 5 mins in a shower warrants a bath!
I am generally in and out of the shower in 3 mins.
Short hair, leave-in conditioner.
DH wets himself down, water off, washes, water on to rinse. No hair 🤣

HideTheCroissants · 14/03/2023 18:21

I’m amazed by the length of some of these showers! I shower and wash my below shoulder length hair every morning - I take about 4 minutes. DH takes slightly less time. DD has waist length hair and takes about 10 minutes.

However I do find sometimes on holiday with poor shower pressure it takes longer to wash hair……

DancingLedgend · 14/03/2023 18:21

3 minutes in this house: not made of money.
Shower on, wet hair and body, shower off.
Apply shampoo and body wash.
On to rinse.
Repeat.

Yes I love standing under a lovely hot shower, I just can't afford to pay for that anymore.

Justputitdown · 14/03/2023 18:22

What am I reading?? TWENTY MINUTES IN THE SHOWER. That is literally 300 litres of water.

Five minutes is plenty. Ten is a luxury.

And I say this as someone who is in the fortunate position of not worrying about bills.
