How long is a reasonable shower?

DD is spending ages in the shower each night. Basically I'm worried we can't afford it, it's getting beyond a joke.
I think 10 minutes max should be enough. DH reckons 5 - which I think is doable and what I aim for - but I don't think she will manage this unless I stand there and personally shower her.

I'm going to start setting a timer! What do you reckon is fair?

No need to discuss your DC's shower habits. A simple number of minutes will suffice!

10.mins hair washing , shaving body washing.

4 minutes is the ultimate. Dh takes 5 minutes. It only takes me a few minutes longer to wash and condition my hair. Those saying 20 minutes are off their rockers. Do you have water meters?

It's not the cost of the water, but the cost of heating it.

If the shower is electric, a 15-20 min shower could be £1 a time.

How can you possibly be properly rinsing shampoo/conditioner out in a 5min shower if you've got long/thick hair???

If I'm just doing a quick (no hair) wash I can be in & out in 2mins but if I'm washing my hair (2-3 times a week) I need a good 3 minutes of rinsing time for shampoo (twice) & the same again for conditioner. I always wash my body/exfoliate while the conditioner is in my hair but for a proper all over body wash that's another 3mins - so that's 12mins not including getting my hair wet in the first place! Add on shaving & I could be 20-25 mins - like a pp I can't see to shave in the shower though so do this in the bath when I can be arsed once a week.

So if she was having a 20 minute shower 3/4 times a week I wouldn't care but if it's 30min or over every day then I'd probably have a chat.

Disclaimer: My own DD would be in there for hours if I didn't moan & she has the shower so hot the devil himself couldn't stand under the water.

5 including a hair wash should be plenty

If you want to soak, have a bath

Isn't that more expensive then?

Gwenhwyfar · 14/03/2023 18:34

Unfair of an adult man to think a teenage girl's washing habits should be like his. The expectations on her are totally different.

greenacrylicpaint · 14/03/2023 18:37

how old?
my teens can spend an insane amount of time under the shower. we have resorted to using an egg timer

up to 10 minutes is reasonable imo considering hair washing and rinsing off all suds properly.

Honoraryuce · 14/03/2023 18:40

5 min

60smusic · 14/03/2023 18:42

15-20 minutes

LondonTripPlanning · 14/03/2023 18:46

I shower 20 mins in morning (hair wash and shave legs), 10 mins in evening. I pay the bill though!

This!

20 mins ish for a full shower, hair washed etc. 5-10 for a quick body wash

TheRookie · 14/03/2023 19:22

Surely it costs pence per shower though, like.50p?! How long is she in there for?

MigratorySheep · 14/03/2023 19:25

25 minutes today 😫Her hair is no longer than mine and she uses a kids 2in 1 shampoo. Really don't see why she needs so much longer than me! She's 11, no shaving yet.

In which case she could be washed and out in well under 5 minutes. The rest is a case of how long you want to give her to just stand there - she doesn’t actually need the time, she’s just enjoying it.

That’s a crazy amount of time spent in the shower! Imagine if we all indulged to that extreme. 10 minutes is more than adequate.

FruityLittleDrink · 14/03/2023 19:51

My 16 year old DS with longer than shoulder length hair has recently reduced his showering time to 20 mins. His 15 year old sister with the same length hair can do hers in 10 and turns the water on and off during that time.

Reddahlias · 14/03/2023 19:54

20 mins ish for a full shower, hair washed etc. 5-10 for a quick body wash

What Confused? Who needs 10 minutes for a quick body wash?? Get wet, use soap, rinse off - takes 2-3 mins max!

And adding a hair wash adds a few more minutes. I can easily wash and condition my long hair within 5-10 minutes.

WunWun · 14/03/2023 19:55

I couldn't give a flying fuck how long my daughter showers for.

I'm so glad I've never lived with any kind of "30 seconds is more than enough!" dullard!

Lucky you not to need to worry about water bills, energy bills, live in a drought area or have any concerns about the environment. And to have apparently unlimited bathroom capacity.

Crazyinlove123 · 14/03/2023 20:02

Good god, I’m not exactly rich but it wouldn’t even occur to me to police how long people are in the shower

WunWun · 14/03/2023 20:05

I would happily get in debt rather than fucking harangue someone over a matter of minutes in the shower. And I'm a single parent ina low paid job. As for bathroom capacity... FFS! People are faux pearl clutching over 15 minutes in this thread. Get a grip.

SevenShortDays · 14/03/2023 20:06

I have no idea how long my kids shower for.

But if my partner told our kids that 5 minutes is enough, I’d have an issue with that.

Unless I’m rushing, I probably spend 15-30 minutes in the shower.

NoSquirrels · 14/03/2023 20:06

5-10 minutes is enough. But my DC of that age also spend bloody ages. 25 minutes is crazy though. Explain to her that it all costs money, and is a waste of water.

Mentalpiece · 14/03/2023 20:08

As long as is needed.
