Is 1 bottle of wine over 2 weeks a lot?

I drink about 1 bottle of wine every two weeks.

I don't feel like this is a lot.

When I'm asked if I drink by the doctor I usually say not much.

Reason I'm asking is because I have been diagnosed with a medical condition that advises to limit alcohol. (Can cause liver issues in the future)

I'd say not.

IamSmarticus · 08/03/2023 16:25

No, that really isn't much at all.

endofthelinefinally · 08/03/2023 16:25

I would say not. Have you read the information on the NHS website?

No, not alot.

LucyLeave · 08/03/2023 16:25

No it's not a lot.

Thesearmsofmine · 08/03/2023 16:26

No, I don’t drink at all and wouldn’t consider that a lot.

CattySam · 08/03/2023 16:26

Nope

WishingIWasOnHoliday · 08/03/2023 16:26

Depends on who you‘re asking! You‘ll get some on here who insist that a sip of sherry at Christmas practically makes you an alcoholic and others who drink every night. Personally, I have a bottle a week (over the weekend), which is perhaps a bit more that I should, but it‘s a lot less than I used to!

I think a bottle over 2 weeks isn‘t much, but what does "limit" alcohol mean in the context of your medication? Reading between the lines, it might mean "don‘t drink".

I'm so glad I posted. This is exactly what I needed to hear! Thank you

No its not at lot at all. Tbh i wouldn't even say 1 bottle a week was a lot.

ironhelp · 08/03/2023 16:29

@WishingIWasOnHoliday it would probably be best to not drink at all. The condition can effect the liver in the future, but as long as I manage the condition it should be ok. And I cant drink with food anymore.
But I'm pretty sure it's not a 'no alcohol' thing.

It's haemochromatosis, as to not be mysterious 🤣

Brendabigbaps · 08/03/2023 16:29

With no medical issues affected by alcohol, no this isn’t a lot.

with a condition where you have been advised to limit alcohol, then yes that would be alot!
You sound like you’re trying to justify continuing to drink as you do.

Letstaketotheskies · 08/03/2023 16:30

It slightly depends on how fast you drink the bottle. One entire bottle in one evening, once every two weeks, is going to have a different effect on your body to half a glass everyday (one bottle distributed evenly over 2weeks).
Talk to your dr about how often you drink and how much at a time and see what they know about this might affect you considering your condition.
One entire bottle in a evening would be considered a binge if I remember correctly, even though your overall intake would not be considered high.

ItsCalledAConversation · 08/03/2023 16:30

No it’s not a lot at all, but my first thought was how vinegary that wine would taste after two weeks being open!

ironhelp · 08/03/2023 16:30

@Brendabigbaps that's exactly what I'm trying to do. And it worked! Hooray!

My mum was diagnosed with fatty liver and the advice to her was basically avoid alcohol except maybe a glass at birthdays and Xmas. So under that kind of advice a bottle a fortnight is a lot.
Can you ask your doctor to be a bit more specific than just restrict your alcohol intake because as a pp said one person's raving alcoholic is another's abstention regime.

ironhelp · 08/03/2023 16:32

@ItsCalledAConversation it's mixed with lemonade , tastes good to me!

It's always spread, no more than a glass a night, and probably not even a full glass. Thats why it lasts 2 weeks

I drink 1 bottle of wine every week on a Friday so half a bottle a week doesnt seem much to me. Is normally about 10 units maybe

Weekly limit is supposed to be 14 units so if you're only drinking 5 a week you are well under that limit

ironhelp · 08/03/2023 16:33

This bottle claims 7,9 units of alcohol. So it's well under the limit, I'm averaging 4 units a week.

OP posts:
DuvetDownn · 08/03/2023 16:34

It’s 5 units a week so not a lot but not nothing either. If you wanted to lower it further you could switch to something like ready made Buck’s Fizz which is 3 to 4 units a bottle.

sixfoot · 08/03/2023 16:34

It’s about what I drink and I don’t consider it a lot

ironhelp · 08/03/2023 16:35

@SoCunningYouCanStickATailOnItAndCallItAFox yes I would abide by that absolutely. My condition is more of- potential to maybe cause liver issues in the future when I start menopause. Quite far off that at the moment (hopefully)

OP posts:
ironhelp · 08/03/2023 16:36

@DuvetDownn that's a good idea, and I love that!

OP posts:
DuvetDownn · 08/03/2023 16:39

Me too, but don’t have too much. Another option is a mini bottle of Prosecco at the weekend mixed with juice so it will last a few nights and then nothing during the week. You could try just the lemonade in a nice glass.
These are all my lightweight tips.

ironhelp · 08/03/2023 16:48

@DuvetDownn I did actually do the lemonade in the glass last night. It wasn't great because it was sugar free and a bit flat, but I think a nice lemonade could do the trick.

Great tips, thank you 😊
