Is 1 bottle of wine over 2 weeks a lot?

ironhelp · 08/03/2023 16:24

I drink about 1 bottle of wine every two weeks.

I don't feel like this is a lot.

When I'm asked if I drink by the doctor I usually say not much.

Reason I'm asking is because I have been diagnosed with a medical condition that advises to limit alcohol. (Can cause liver issues in the future)

With no medical issues affected by alcohol, no this isn’t a lot.

with a condition where you have been advised to limit alcohol, then yes that would be alot!
You sound like you’re trying to justify continuing to drink as you do.

Well dur.. 🤭

@Brendabigbaps that's exactly what I'm trying to do. And it worked! Hooray!

🤣🙌

Thanks very much @ironhelp - fingers crossed we can both avoid needing venesection.

Honestky? I think your question is crap. You worded it so that everyone would answer ‘of course it’s not a lot!’ without giving the full information right from the start.

The answer to your question is IT DEPENDS IN THE CONDITION

And no one on MN will be able to tell you that.
Go back to see your GP and ask what they mean by an appropriate amount. Incl the one bottle in 2 weeks.
I have to say, I’m wondering why you didn’t say that to the GP in answer to his question tbh.

Honestky you need to get a grip

Igenix4 · 08/03/2023 19:49

Not remotely a lot. I'd finish a bottle in one hour

bumpytrumpy · 08/03/2023 19:53

It's not a lot.

But to take an alternative view, it's so little then why bother at all?

Being tee total would be healthier. And better for your liver. What pleasure is less than a glass of wine a night giving you? I would suggest trying the many non-alcoholic wines, beers, Prosecco etc and see what else you like. Then you can lose the worry.

Rewis · 08/03/2023 19:55

It's not a lot however if I had a medical consider with potential liver problems then I'd limit alcohol even from the 1 bottle/2 weeka

Namechangenoidea · 08/03/2023 20:03

It’s not a lot but I don’t think I don’t drink much is the right answer to the doctors question. You drink every week no? To me someone who answers they don’t drink much/not really a drinker is a few times a year.

Suzi888 · 08/03/2023 20:10

Red wine is the best option, add water. It does say to avoid alcohol with haemochromatosis. ask your doctor. Depends on the severity of the condition maybe…. ?

fruitandfibreg · 08/03/2023 20:15

Absolutely not

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 08/03/2023 20:17

A whole bottle of wine in one sitting every other Friday - possibly problematic

A single glass of fine every 3 or 4 days -not a problem.

ironhelp · 08/03/2023 20:22

@bumpytrumpy just that tiny bit of wine is enough to help me to relax and to chill out. I could drink more than a glass without feeling quite tipsy.
I suppose it would be good to stop relying on that! It's not every night , maybe 3 a week.

I see what your saying and appreciate your view, thank you.

@Dominoeffecter thank you 😀

@Suzi888 severity is really low. So low it was undetectable to the GPs. It is something that is likely to effect me when I start menopause. And even then, not guaranteed to effect my liver.

It’s hardly anything at all!! I’d be more worried about getting a stomach upset!

xprincessxjanetx · 08/03/2023 20:31

No, unless this is a massive drip feed and your bottle of wine is about 10 gallons in size.

CombatBarbie · 08/03/2023 20:40

Is your bottle a magnum size?

tazzy73 · 08/03/2023 21:30

Hi ironhelp,
I also have Haemochromatosis. I got diagnosed a few years ago. It's a celtic disease. Also known as the Irish disease (any Irish in your family?).
I got genetic testing when my HB was high for a female.
My GP does an odd check on My Ferritin. Luckily I have not needed to use venepuncture to get rid of blood as yet.
My husband needed to also get genetic testing to ensure we did not pass it onto our children. All good there.
My GP has never mentioned to check alcohol use, whatsoever!
I also check my bloods and liver function tests as I am in the medical field.
It's definitely an unusual one, I wouldn't be worried about your alcohol use whatsoever at all.

Taz.

God I bet it’s vinegar at the end of two weeks. 🤢

RafaellaOrDella · 09/03/2023 00:19

It's not a lot in an absolute sense, but it does seem to be a regular habit and you might feel better in yourself if you can break the habit and drink less regularly. Could you replace the wine with a different mixer like ginger cordial? I have likewise been trying to break the habit (but I have tried to do exercise every time I fancy wine at the end of the day. It's a poor swap.)

This study about your condition defines 'very moderate alcohol consumption' as less than 20g of ethanol a day. A UK unit is 8g of ethanol. That's 280g or 35 units over a fortnight. A bottle of 12% wine is about 9 units.

www.gastrojournal.org/article/S0016-5085(02)80320-1/fulltext

This one saw negative effects if the subjects consumed over 40g/day.

ironhelp · 09/03/2023 10:59

Hi @tazzy73 thank you so much for your reply.
This is great to hear!

As is this information @ButteryNuts ! Thank you, really appreciate that.

@RafaellaOrDella yes absolutely. I am going to cut it out completely. I don't need it and I didn't know about it not lasting 2 weeks and it's put me off! Good luck to you too!
