Is 1 bottle of wine over 2 weeks a lot?

ironhelp · 08/03/2023 16:24

I drink about 1 bottle of wine every two weeks.

I don't feel like this is a lot.

When I'm asked if I drink by the doctor I usually say not much.

Reason I'm asking is because I have been diagnosed with a medical condition that advises to limit alcohol. (Can cause liver issues in the future)

Hmmm. If I was told that I could potentially make a condition worse by drinking alcohol, I’d just give up. Surely health is the most important thing? There are lots of lovely alternatives now - all of which taste better than a bottle of wine that’s been open for two weeks.

Newnamenewname109870 · 08/03/2023 16:50

It’s not a lot but I’d say limit it as much as possible if you have a medical condition

Lelophants · 08/03/2023 16:52

A bottle of wine contains about 10 units, so ten divided by two is about five units a week. Not loads but still more than you’d drink if you want to be careful! I wouldn’t drink that if pregnant so I wouldn’t if I had any condition related to the liver!

Well it’s obviously not !

Newnamenewname109870 · 08/03/2023 16:54

My only concern is why are you drinking it so frequently even if in reduced doses? As it sounds like you have it in your system for a lot of the week?I guess you can try and reduce the amount even further so you have less in your system at all times?

It’s your life! You need to decide if it’s worth it.

Chasingsquirrels · 08/03/2023 16:55

NHS online says

  • avoid drinking excessive amounts of alcohol – this can increase the level of iron in your body and put extra strain on your liver

1 bottle spread reasonably evenly over 2 weeks doesn't sound excessive.
Probably worth asking your consultant/specialist rather than Mumsnet!

Arniesleftleg · 08/03/2023 16:56

No. It takes me this long to get through a bottle of wine when I open one and I class myself as a very light drinker.

fussyferalkids · 08/03/2023 16:56

NHS says avoid excessive alcohol, but medically any alcohol is not a good idea and lots of other places it recommends no alcohol at all. I would stick to the occasional glass of Buck's Fizz or similar, like every few months, or not risk it at all. But it's all about finding your own balance, I have health conditions which I don't follow the health advice to the letter, not alcohol related as personally I am teetotal, but eating the wrong things and not getting the right amount of exercise, weight mostly which could really help my conditions.

fussyferalkids · 08/03/2023 16:56

Generally I would class that as not drinking much, though

BigusBumus1 · 08/03/2023 16:56

Its bugger all!

liveforsummer · 08/03/2023 16:57

Sounds like it's a low percentage wine and you are lowering it even further with lemonade so I'd really not worry about this - maybe try and have a couple of days totally free and consult your dr with the info asap

greenacrylicpaint · 08/03/2023 17:00

that's about 4 glasses, right.

no, it's not a lot at all, but there is no 'safe' level of alkohol.

Oblomov23 · 08/03/2023 17:11

No.

latetothefisting · 08/03/2023 17:12

Does the wine go a bit horrible after 2 weeks though?

Just because I know if I open a bottle I feel like I "need" to drink it within a few days before it gets flat/vinegary etc. so end up having a drink on a night when if there wasn't a bottle open I wouldn't have bothered if that makes sense? You could try getting some of the mini bottles that are only one glass in if you're the same so might naturally reduce how much you drink (if you want to) when you have to open a new bottle each time rather than having an easy access one there.

ironhelp · 08/03/2023 17:13

@Chasingsquirrels my doctor knows nothing about this condition, And I have no consultant! I'm left with dr google! Mumsnet was actually how I got my diagnosis. So I have faith 😆

@Newnamenewname109870 I didn't think of it like this, that's a good point. It's not everyday, but I see it would be good to have a few days without any in my system.

The NHS website says to avoid drinking “too much alcohol” and I would consider what you’re drinking fits within that guidance.

If it helps I have a friend with that condition and they find being well hydrated really helps. They are always drinking glasses of water. But also often a glass of beer or wine if we go out for dinner.

BeachBlondey · 08/03/2023 17:20

That's nothing. I can drink 2 bottles in a night!

cisisaslur · 08/03/2023 17:30

God no

Chasingsquirrels · 08/03/2023 17:36

Mumsnet was actually how I got my diagnosis.
Maybe start a new post with the condition in the title, and repeat your question. You will be more likely to get answers which address the actual question you want answered and not just a subjective "is this a lot" eg
haemochromatosis - alcohol intake

LaviniasBigBloomers · 08/03/2023 17:41

You need to speak to someone who knows about the condition and can help you make informed decisions! For example, it's not just a case of waiting to see if its an issue at menopause - they can put you on a regime where they take blood over a period of time which will reduce your iron. And you need a better definition of what 'excessive' alcohol is than MN can give you! Ask for a referral if your GP knows nothing.

Thisisformathilda · 08/03/2023 17:41

No, that's absolutely minimal now if you were drinking a bottle of wine every night you would have a problem. I wouldn't worry about it.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 08/03/2023 17:42

No, it isn't a lot and is well within healthy guidelines for the average person, but as you have a liver condition, I would suggest checking with your doctor if you are uncertain. With some liver conditions you are advised to have next to no alcohol. 'Limit' alcohol is a bit vague

oakleaffy · 08/03/2023 17:42

ItsCalledAConversation · 08/03/2023 16:30

No it’s not a lot at all, but my first thought was how vinegary that wine would taste after two weeks being open!

Same here!

Crikeyalmighty · 08/03/2023 17:44

@ironhelp that's interesting as I've got raised ferretin levels but I don't think high enough for them to suspect Haemochromatosis (154) - I'm going to retest though in 6 weeks

justasking111 · 08/03/2023 17:44

ironhelp · 08/03/2023 16:29

@WishingIWasOnHoliday it would probably be best to not drink at all. The condition can effect the liver in the future, but as long as I manage the condition it should be ok. And I cant drink with food anymore.
But I'm pretty sure it's not a 'no alcohol' thing.

It's haemochromatosis, as to not be mysterious 🤣

I've two friends with this condition they both enjoy drinking. One in USA the other UK. Try not to worry about it. You'll learn how to manage it.
