Is 1 bottle of wine over 2 weeks a lot?

I drink about 1 bottle of wine every two weeks.

I don't feel like this is a lot.

When I'm asked if I drink by the doctor I usually say not much.

Reason I'm asking is because I have been diagnosed with a medical condition that advises to limit alcohol. (Can cause liver issues in the future)

@Chasingsquirrels I wanted a general view. If I ask regarding the condition, I would get answers from people who have significant symptoms and problems from this condition, as that's when it's usually diagnosed.

@LaviniasBigBloomers I have had a consultation with a haematologist and they discharged me as my levels aren't high enough to have blood removed. They said to be re-referred when I start menopause.

@Leftbutcameback thank you for your reply. I do always stay very hydrated as my haemoglobin is also always high! Good to know they still enjoy a drink 😊

Surely it goes off if open for 2 weeks? Have you thought about checking the NHS website about weekly recommendations?

gogohmm · 08/03/2023 17:55

If you are mixing it anyway, why not buy an alcohol free wine

Have you tried putting agostura bitters into lemonade? That’s nice and more interesting than straight lemonade and much lower alcohol content than a wine spritzer.

GraceandMolly · 08/03/2023 18:05

That’s 50ml a day. It isn’t much.

Kranke · 08/03/2023 18:08

Sounds fine - unless you’re pregnant!!

maddy68 · 08/03/2023 18:14

No

ironhelp · 08/03/2023 18:17

I am definitely not going to be carry on with this. I thought wine didn't go off. Maybe that's my way out of my habit!

Thanks for the suggestions. @Letstaketotheskies I am adding this to my next shop. Thanks!

It's hardly wine at all, but the wine must taste pretty nasty by the end of the fortnight surely?

HoleyShit · 08/03/2023 18:58

What's that, about 5 units per week?

No, it's not a lot in the grand scheme of things.

MyriadOfTravels · 08/03/2023 19:02

Honestky? I think your question is crap. You worded it so that everyone would answer ‘of course it’s not a lot!’ without giving the full information right from the start.

The answer to your question is IT DEPENDS IN THE CONDITION

And no one on MN will be able to tell you that.
Go back to see your GP and ask what they mean by an appropriate amount. Incl the one bottle in 2 weeks.
I have to say, I’m wondering why you didn’t say that to the GP in answer to his question tbh.

ironhelp · 08/03/2023 19:06

@MyriadOfTravels it's right there in my first post Confused

@ironhelp - I also have genetic haemochromotosis - not needing blood removed yet as just have the genetic condition ( and also ended up effectively working it out myself and pushing for the genetic test as could see my ferritin was raised). I’ve never met anyone else with it!

I was advised to give up alcohol if I could - which I have. Other than that no advice at all and doctors seem quite dismissive of it. Just a blood test every two years ( and I’m quite near menopause). Just wondering if you’ve found any helpful sites etc ( most I’ve found seem to be from the US?).

Littlemice · 08/03/2023 19:21

Ps all the people saying to the OP that she needs to speak to someone - honestly my experience is the GP knows nothing really and has pretty much no interest. I am lucky to have private healthcare and the haemotologist also was very dismissive - just told me, said it wasn’t a problem as could have venosuction if levels got high, try to give up alcohol and discharged me saying blood tests every year ( but put every two in his letter). It’s not great tbh - particularly as raised ferritin is inflammation in your system.

It seems in the US it is taken a bit more seriously and there are some sites with suggestions to try and prevent iron overload.

Thesearmsofmine · 08/03/2023 16:26

No, I don’t drink at all and wouldn’t consider that a lot.

Ditto.

user1498572889 · 08/03/2023 19:25

No it’s not. One bottle of wine over 2 hours is not a lot either 😂😂

ironhelp · 08/03/2023 19:25

Hi @Littlemice

Thank you for your reply. I have found the most helpful resource are the charity haemochromatosis UK. I paid to become a member and they have some really useful information. Also have someone you can call to help you with any questions.
Also some great Facebook groups. Haemochromatosis family in particular. The page is run by a really informative knowledgeable lady. Everyone in the group has experience and information. It's great.

I will be having blood tests every 3 months for the rest of my life. My iron saturation was very high, but my ferritin was low. It's an interesting condition!

Thanks @Littlemice I have had a very similar experience to you with doctors and hematologists. Completely agree

I have 2 bottles a week, have been asked at lots of nhs appointments and not one as said anything

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 08/03/2023 19:36

There is an 'urban myth' that if asked by a HCP how much you drink, they automatically double it!

Littlemice · 08/03/2023 19:37

@ironhelp - thank you, I will take a look at that site. I’ve honestly felt a bit lost with it all.

Im actually the opposite - my ferritin was raised, but due to my having had a large fibroid ( now removed) I ended up severely anaemic. It will be interesting to see what my bloods do now I’m not have excessive periods. This thread has actually reminded me to book a blood test ( I am thinking of getting one more frequently privately if I can).

Im actually a heterozygous so I think at slightly less risk of developing clinical haemochromotosis.

Apologies for all the posts - from my experience no one seems to have heard of it and as I said I’ve yet to meet anyone else with it!

@PlaitBilledDuckyPuss of topic but I love your username 😆

As an aside I’ve actually found giving up alcohol much easier than I thought if you wanted to try that - the first 3 months were quite hard but after that it became second nature and now I hardly think about it ( I’ve been tee total for nearly two years now). It was also stressed to me that it was as important to keep weight down due to heightened risk of fatty liver disease.

ironhelp · 08/03/2023 19:42

@Littlemice I do understand how you feel. My doctor dismissed me when I asked to be tested for it. I bought a home test through the charity. Even then my doctor had very little knowledge to help me. The haematologist wasn't great either as it's actually a metabolic illness. Gastroenterologist would be better.

Your version is definitely a mild one. As long as you can be tested for ferritin and saturation regularly, you will be able to manage it. The charity is amazing, I really recommend getting in touch with them. I seem to have learnt a lot about it. You can PM anytime and I will try to help.
