Continuation of previous threads (thread 5).

Gather here all ye refugees from the JTT Flat Earth Society, welcome to the reassuringly oblate spheroid of MN! Ye all already know the answers to the questions "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

So really we're all here just to chat randomly.

I know a few people who have both Aga and an electric cooker, but those two are quite oddly positioned. It looks awkward.

Tricyrtis2022 · 16/04/2023 11:40

In other news, yesterday I washed my mud-encrusted water proofs and hung them to dry. Went to check them and saw that one of the robins had done a shit on the jacket. Thanks, robins...

For the first time in years our town has a man selling vegetable plants (in helpfully small quantities). I now have lettuces that I planted three weeks ago coming on nicely, green broccoli and beetroot settling in, and as of today scallions (spring onions), spinach, and cut and come lettuce. There are also hundreds of self-sown parsley plants. I cadged a few seed potatoes from the man I buy logs from, and I'm feeding and earthing up a few left over weed potatoes from last year.

Now to put in the nasturtium plants from Lidl - I'm hoping for a summer of mixed salads.

I also have some perennials plant, more stuff to relocate including tree lupin seedlings, and a gooseberry and some currants.

Such a contrast to last year when it was so dry and hard all through spring that I hardly planted anything edible - at least the herbs did well.

SqueakyDinosaur · 16/04/2023 12:06

I went and bought loads of plants for my garden yesterday - lavenders, euphorbias, Sylvia's, aquilegia, cranesbill geraniums, pulmonaria and some others I can't remember, plus cherry tomatoes to grow on my bedroom balcony (there are 62 steps between me and my garden...). It was so nice picking them. Now I just need the UK-wide dearth of slug nematodes to be remedied, and to get round to ordering a new shed.

More alarmingly, my lovely downstairs neighbours have messaged to say their bathroom ceiling has collapsed, so I need to get someone to come and investigate that - directly under my bathroom.

Tricyrtis2022 · 16/04/2023 12:15

Oh no, that bathroom thing sounds awful! Hope it's not too much of an upheaval.

Winterborne74 · 16/04/2023 12:25

😱Bathroom thing sounds very stressful. It’s bad enough when it’s your own ceiling affected, but when it’s the neighbours’ that twice as anxiety inducing. Hope it’s easy to resolve and covered by insurance.

Britinme · 16/04/2023 12:28

The Aga and electric cooker arrangement is bizarre. The kitchen is quite big - you'd have thought a better arrangement would be possible. Lovely views from that house.

Britinme · 16/04/2023 12:29

@SqueakyDinosaur - oh dear! That sounds expensive, but if it's caused by a leak maybe you could claim on your insurance?

SqueakyDinosaur · 16/04/2023 12:51

It happened before, a while back, and I had it looked at. That time it turned out to be blocked gutters, but this time I'm pretty sure it must be connected to the bath, as it was late last night and I had a (rare) bath around 11.30pm.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 16/04/2023 13:05

To me the AGA/cooker positioning says 'AT the crossroads, stake THROUGH the heart'. I feel it's someone using a kitchen they didn't design, hate, but have no authority to change.

The bathroom situation - aaaaargh!

artant · 16/04/2023 14:39

Hope the bathroom issue is simple to fix @SqueakyDinosaur

That house is bizarre! Aga in kitchen and separate cooker in scullery (would be a utility room these days) was fairly standard in the farmhouses of assorted aunts and uncles in my childhood but the Aga was very much in use. Apart from anything else, that’s where the Welshcakes were cooked!

MavisMcMinty · 16/04/2023 14:42

No windows, though! How are you supposed to see the coast of Scotland through solid walls?

MavisMcMinty · 16/04/2023 14:49

Many of my neighbours have a range and an electric cooker, turning off the range in summer. We have an Aga and no room for anything else in the kitchen, but keep a Baby Belling single hob in the larder from macman’s parents which is as old as he is (65), and bring it out when the Aga explodes soot bombs/needs a service/runs out of oil. We did turn the Aga off last summer because of the heatwave, but it provides all our hot water so it’s all a bit of a pain when it’s off.

Kucinghitam · 16/04/2023 15:11

Oh no @SqueakyDinosaur! Sending you positive bathroom vibes...

Eek! I hope the bathroom problem is easily found and solved.

Kids as nutters- buying a couple of holiday clothing items in Sainsbury’s yesterday, E & I then move through the other non-food aisles. We’re in the cookware section.
E: “do we need a gravy boat.”
Me: “no, we have 2 in fact so don’t need one.”
E: “no, I mean for taking on holiday”
Me: ?!

Medee · 16/04/2023 16:27

Kids as nutters 2 - in the car.

T: “is this the street with the macaroni cheese car.”
me: “the what?”
T: “I mean, the McLaren!”

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 16/04/2023 16:43

Haha! Top nuttery, there.

Wow, that's amazing, what a beautiful gift from the mother to her son. The collection looks fabulous.

MavisMcMinty · 16/04/2023 16:58

Oh that’s so wonderful! What a lovely, lovely thread.

Britinme · 16/04/2023 17:08

That is quite beautiful.
