Continuation of previous threads (thread 5).

Gather here all ye refugees from the JTT Flat Earth Society, welcome to the reassuringly oblate spheroid of MN! Ye all already know the answers to the questions "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

So really we're all here just to chat randomly.

Sad news of the excellent darkhorse in the old place, the most unwelcome post I've read. He has a nasty cancer, has been ill for sometime, actually. I don't want to guess what the prognosis is. One of the good ones, I always think.

That's very sad to hear, I always thought (prob for no good reason) of dh as a relative youngster.

duc748 · 07/04/2023 20:44

In other news, a satisfying win in the derby for us, in front of the biggest crowd in 18 years. it's a great atmosphere when there's a big crowd, it really is a massive community event. There are loads of kids and women there of all ages. Young girls of seven or eight, all in the their replica kits, right up to grannies. And all loving it. The club have put a lot of effort in recent years into making it a good family day out.

Sad to hear about Darkhourse. I remember the name. Cancer sucks so hard.

I really couldn't have asked for better weather today. We sat outside a restaurant at the end of the pier. I ended up not having ice cream but a gin and tonic on an empty stomach, a treat I allow myself once in a while because it's total heaven when it hits your stomach. You can only have one unless you are prepared for utter carnage because the second will take you on a dark road to hell. I then had a hot chocolate which was equally lovely. Seamus came along so my favourite dog was there, I got kisses from three other dogs. My friend B got me a bigger air fryer and I'll be giving her my smaller one. She has a real oven and I don't hence why a bigger one works better for me. Oh and B fixed my washing machine. We think. I've run it since getting home and it sounded like the drum was loaded with bricks at one point which was worrying, but it did a good wash and wasn't full of water at the end so that was good. Once we'd drained the machine, well she'd drained the machine, the pump was opened and there was a pair of knickers wrapped around the pump. They were not my knickers. We have no idea who knickers got round the pump. Anyway! A really lovely day and more fun to be had tomorrow!

Gonners · 07/04/2023 22:21

Sad news about darkhorse, who I thought (for quite a long time) was a woman. I don't think he'd mind me saying that.

"Alien knickers in the pump" would be a great name for a Eurovision act.

Very sad about darkhorse. We didn’t interact much, but he is one of my favourite posters to read (largely because he is right most of the time i.e. I almost always agree with him). I also find him funny, fair and kind. Poor him and his family - it’s bloody unfair.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 07/04/2023 22:56

That's very sad news about darkhorse.

Britinme · 07/04/2023 23:31

When is Eurovision? I need to fire up my VPN to watch it. I converted my husband to it the year we happened to be in the UK when it was on and Lordi (sp?) won.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 07/04/2023 23:38

May. I'm sure it used to be the second bank holiday weekend, but now usually seems to be middle of the month.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 07/04/2023 23:39

13th May, this year.

Britinme · 07/04/2023 23:40

Thanks @BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn

Dotellhimpike · 08/04/2023 00:12

Had my fair share of run ins with Darkhorse but always thought he was a decent cove. Fuck cancer.

SinnerBoy · 08/04/2023 02:05

Happy Birthday, Crows! My daughter has hers tomorrow.

And sad news about darkhorse, too.

artant · 08/04/2023 02:35

That’s sad news about darkhorse.

And that sounds like an excellent birthday all round @NotDrowningJustCrowing - gin, hot chocolate and a new air fryer are all good things. I do have an oven but have hardly used it since getting an air fryer.

Kucinghitam · 08/04/2023 06:11

Lakeland just sent me a brochure with a dual-basket air fryer for £120. I am so tempted.

But we've just paid for a whole frikkin' bathroom, and we have a bunch of other expenses coming up, and we have no storage in our ghastly kitchen.

(OTOH our oven is a pile of shite, expensive to run because it's extra-huge, and the cooling fan trips the entire half of the consumer unit about half the time we use it).

Decisions, decisions.

My air fryer is a two drawer Ninja one. My mum likes her evening meal to involve potatoes but only really wants them to be fried. Actually pan-frying them means they’re too oily and while she likes them her digestive system doesn’t do I was putting the oven on for a tiny bit if meat and a few potatoes.

Now I can bung a bit of meat or fish in one drawer and a few pre-boiled potatoes cut up and tossed with a tiny bit of oil and cook her dinner in about 15 minutes including preparing and boiling some green veg. And the two drawer thing means one side can also be used for something veggie for me if I’m being really lazy.

I’m a total convert!

duc748 · 08/04/2023 11:59

Proper roasties need an oven!

Tricyrtis2022 · 08/04/2023 12:45

That's very sad news about darkhorse. I didn't have a lot of interaction with him, but enjoyed his posts.

Proper roasties need an oven!

I used my proper oven just yesterday to make proper roasties but it was the first time I’d switched the oven on since Christmas, I think.

But the minimal oil fried potatoes I used to make in the oven for mum are made in a fraction if the time in the air fryer and are every bit as good.

I’ve yet to try baking in the air fryer but it’s just a small oven so no reason it won’t work. In particular, I reckon it’d probably be great for pita bread as that’s better from the oven than the hob but pre-heating an oven to a high temperature to cook a bit of dough for 3 minutes is bonkers.

Britinme · 08/04/2023 14:03

I haven't tried baked goods in my air fryer yet, but my DDIL has and said it burned them.

artant · 08/04/2023 14:06

Yeah, it’s probably the point at which using a recipe written for an air fryer would be a good plan. I’ve yet to do that for anything beyond looking at the sticker on the front fit tough timings.

artant · 08/04/2023 14:06

I’ve used reheat to warm baked good though. That’s pretty handy.

CyanCrystalViolet · 08/04/2023 14:44

I didn’t get on with mine and returned it. I can’t afford to use the oven at the moment so I cook mostly rice-based things and stir fries. Now Spring’s arrived I’m eating more cold foods like tinned mackerel and salads, tabbouleh and the like. Hooray.

artant · 08/04/2023 15:01

I mostly make myself stir fries but my mum’s needs are for simple and familiar foods. The air fryer has been a game-changer.

Happy Easter. I'm back from the dawn mass in the old graveyard - starting in the pitch dark, ending with enough light to see who else is there and to admire the crowd of pipistrelles returning to their roost in the walls of the ruined church. Consider your intentions prayed for.

I'm now drinking cool stewed tea and contemplating scrambled eggs with smoked salmon. And my first chocolate since Shrove Tuesday - big egg? little egg? chocolate covered cherries? decisions decisions.

The management are complaining about negligent gadabouts who STARVE cats.
