How long before it's safe to lift the upturned cup off the spider?

It's been about an hour now...do you think that's long enough to extinguish it? I have visions of leaving it a week and it still scampers off in glee when I lift the cup off! And no, I'm not putting the spider outside - the fall from height would probably be the end of it anyway.

For the love of God they live inside. Outdoors will kill them.
My house is a spider magnet and I've learned to live alongside them. If you really can't stand to pick it up then a glass and card slid underneath and transport to a room not near you. That's what I do. I'd never leave the cup over it. I leave towels draped over the bath as well so they don't get stuck in the tub.
