How long before it's safe to lift the upturned cup off the spider?

It's been about an hour now...do you think that's long enough to extinguish it? I have visions of leaving it a week and it still scampers off in glee when I lift the cup off! And no, I'm not putting the spider outside - the fall from height would probably be the end of it anyway.

Ffs, you’re not really using an upturned cup to kill a spider are you? Just take it outside. Or if you’re hell bent on killing a harmless spider just for existing, at least squash it so it dies quickly… don’t leave it to die slowly under a cup.

She asked me to kill the spider
Instead, I got the most
peaceful weapons I can find

I take a cup and a napkin.
I catch the spider, put it outside
and allow it to walk away

If I am ever caught in the wrong place
at the wrong place, just being alive
and not bothering anyone,

I hope I am greeted
with the same kind
of mercy.

This is lovely. I have a massive phobia of spiders but I can't kill them. I can pop a cup over them for someone else to deal with. Or I now have a spider catcher on a long stick which I can remove them with. But I can't kill them...I imagine them looking up at me, looming over them, and feeling terrified when they were just hanging out in their home Grin

MistyMooninabluesky · 24/02/2023 17:41

Just take it outside Ffs 🤬
They can go weeks without food, you’re cruelty is revolting.

The fall from height is unlikely to hurt it. The heavier the animal, the more the landing is going to hurt.

A landing from terminal velocity for a spider won't do it any damage

KattyKattyKatz · 24/02/2023 17:42

What a vile post . I bet you won't stop at spiders .

CheeseDreamsTonight · 24/02/2023 17:43

Move it outside! I had no idea cups were death chambers in some houses! Why?!

GoodChat · 24/02/2023 17:44

If you're not going to take it outside you're going to have to start catching flies for it and accept you have a pet now. Give it some little sticks to make a web on.

donquixotedelamancha · 24/02/2023 17:44

the fall from height would probably be the end of it anyway.

The surface area to mass ratio of a spider is such that they can survive a fall from any height.

Hate to break it to you, but most spiders you’ll see in the UK are tegenaria domestica- house spiders- and won’t survive outside. So you are killing them too.

It's getting warmer now. They'd die if they couldn't find shetler on a cold night (or any night in some areas) but not from just being put outside.

I’m so sick of humans killing stuff. Just take the poor thing outside FFS.

This

RunTowardsTheLight · 24/02/2023 17:46

The cup thing is so that you can take it outside OP. Not suffocate it!!

Chenford · 24/02/2023 17:46

Jesus Christ, that’s upsetting and cruel.

For fucks sake OP, stop being so bloody ridiculous.

PoshCoffee · 24/02/2023 17:48

bussteward · 24/02/2023 17:19

Just move house and leave the cup.

Absolutely this. Those giant spiders are the biggest CF going.

IncessantNameChanger · 24/02/2023 17:49

Poor spider. I did entomology as part of my degree. Falling into a cup of dilute washing up liquid ( trap in field to assess biodiversity, sorry many insects WAS harmed on my degree) for 24 hours didn't kill it. I put this massive spider under the microscope and lowered my head in to identify it, and it jumped up and run off. After being immersed and unable to breath for a whole day.

Icaughtuadeliciousbass · 24/02/2023 17:50

I'm scared of even dead spiders 😂

But please don't kill the little bastard, thats just nasty!

UnaOfStormhold · 24/02/2023 17:13

Unless you live in Australia it's perfectly safe, just as it was when the spider was going about its business.

Not just Australia
other countries have dangerous spiders that get into houses. We have an exterminator every 3 months to keep our house spider free. Don’t want any bites that cause necrosis.

the cup won’t kill it for weeks. Honestly, by that point I would expect it to figure out a way to escape unless it is a very heavy cup with a tight seal to the ground.

ouch321 · 24/02/2023 17:59

LOL at these replies.

People on here always delight in telling people that they're evil for killing spiders.

Yet those same people will happily kill flies or wasps etc that come in the house and walk along the pavement without a thought to all the tiny little bugs and ants they're killing.

Do what you need to OP. Vacuum is an alternative.

tigger1001 · 24/02/2023 18:04

bussteward · 24/02/2023 17:19

Just move house and leave the cup.

Yep, that would be my advice

I am terrified of spiders. And wouldn't be able to get close enough to get a cup over it - so op is doing better than me 😂

Lulu1919 · 24/02/2023 18:05

NEVER EVER EVER

Inastatus · 24/02/2023 18:05

I hate spiders but would never kill one, nor do I deliberately kill any other living creature fyi @ouch321 Please don’t kill it OP.

DanFmDorking · 24/02/2023 18:06

Be careful

How long before it's safe to lift the upturned cup off the spider?
DoeRayMe · 24/02/2023 18:15

Never. It's a permanent feature of your home now!!

Accidentally squishing an ant is not the same as suffocating a spider for a week.

treshy · 24/02/2023 18:23

I hope him and his Spidey friends haunt you for the rest of your life, what a cruel thing to do, just take it outside.

losingit31 · 24/02/2023 18:27

I'm assuming you're all vegan then?
