How long before it's safe to lift the upturned cup off the spider?

losingit31 · 24/02/2023 17:07

It's been about an hour now...do you think that's long enough to extinguish it? I have visions of leaving it a week and it still scampers off in glee when I lift the cup off! And no, I'm not putting the spider outside - the fall from height would probably be the end of it anyway.

That is so cruel. It has as much right to live as you do.

daytriptovulcan · 24/02/2023 19:56

Such horrible cruelty. Just slide some paper under the cup and drop him outside. You d be overrun in flies and other creepies if it wasn't for spiders

Cocobutt · 24/02/2023 20:25

To others too who say 'just take it outside' do you not understand???

She has taken it outside though.

I know people who have phobias of spiders.
I also know people with phobias of cats, rats and birds.
None of them want them to die though and don’t intentionally kill them.

If you are to trap a spider under a cup and carry it outside then it’s not a phobia.

I get your fear.

I'd enlist someone else to remove it.

Else leave it for a long time.

@KattyKattyKatz your name is apt. Have you no empathy for people with a fear of spiders?

She has put it outside, so all your pom-pom waving was a bit of a waste of time, wasn't it?
What were we failing to UNDERSTAND?

I don't like spiders . But to say you are going to let it suffocate sounds vile . Come on you can get someone to remove the spider for you , Have a heart ,

losingit31 · 24/02/2023 18:27

I'm assuming you're all vegan then?

I assume you aren't either so why not just twat it out of it's misery rather than subjecting it to a horrible slow death.

MissMaple82 · 24/02/2023 20:55

Ffs that's evil. Grow up, if you can put a glass over it, you can slide a card under it and release the poor thing outside!!

MissMaple82 · 24/02/2023 20:57

ouch321 · 24/02/2023 17:59

LOL at these replies.

People on here always delight in telling people that they're evil for killing spiders.

Yet those same people will happily kill flies or wasps etc that come in the house and walk along the pavement without a thought to all the tiny little bugs and ants they're killing.

Do what you need to OP. Vacuum is an alternative.

What a nobhead comment. You sound ridiculous

PinkPantherPaws · 24/02/2023 20:59

I hate spiders...yes it's illogical, bla bla...but I'm terrified of them. Not actually a phobia because I can bring myself to catch them in a cup or whatever. But I wouldn't be able to rest if one ran under the sofa or something.

I always, always try to catch under a cup and release and I'm successful most of the time. BUT if I'm unable to catch it and its near the edge of a sofa or something else, it gets the shoe treatment. I feel bad, but it's a choice between that or me spending the next five hours looking for it.

However, at least it's a quick death. Trapping any living thing and waiting for it to slowly suffocate to death is horrifically cruel.

losingit31 · 24/02/2023 18:27

I'm assuming you're all vegan then?

Ffs being a meat eater doesn't give everyone a green card to kill everything!! I am a vegetarian but christ alive I know many meat eaters that still have compassion and don't go around torturing and killing for the sake of it

purpledalmation · 24/02/2023 21:07

Slide a paper underneath and throw it outside. It's cruel. Only psychopaths kill animals and insects.

Oh, you’re going to EAT him? Fair enough, then.

3luckystars · 24/02/2023 21:10

Thanks be to God. A happy ending. Now I can sleep.

GlassBunion · 24/02/2023 21:12

@KattyKattyKatz
You really don't understand the fear, do you?

Do you have any fears?

I can vomit without needing years of CBT

I can happily scratch my fingers down a blackboard.

Wasps can waft around me.

I can speak to a crowd

I can stand on the highest tower and look down.

I can sit in a bath of eels.

I WILL NOT stay in the same room as a spider. I cannot. I will leave the house. I will cry. I will claw at my skin. I really don't care if it lives or dies. If I lived on my own, I will happily lock the house up and stay in a hotel.
Luckily I'm married to an understanding man who will remove the object of my overriding fear.

Howmanysleepsnow · 24/02/2023 21:16

I have an actual phobia of dentists, but I still wouldn’t suffocate one (even though I’m not vegan).

Nowthatlovehasperished · 24/02/2023 21:19

I'd give it at least 10 weeks.

Mochudubh · 24/02/2023 21:23

@GlassBunion

I totally get that. If a spider is in the bath I'll wash at the sink and wash hair with a jug rather than use the shower unless DH is home and awake to remove it. If it's a big one, I'll go downstairs and wash at the kitchen sink.

The OP has been brave enough to capture it but not brave enough to move or dispatch it quickly and would prefer it died a lingering death while telling Ng the rest of us we "must be vegans".

Pretty much. It's a spider for fuck sake.

TwoMonthsOff · 24/02/2023 21:34

So sick of idiots and ‘burn the house down’ comments , grown adults freaking out over a harmless spider. So cruel and Ill informed

Abouttimemum · 24/02/2023 21:37

Pop a piece of card under it and take it outside into the garden. Don’t suffocate the poor thing!

Justleaveitblankthen · 24/02/2023 21:39

Ah the poor little creature will be terrified 🙁

Do the right thing and rescue it OP.

(HRTFT, you may have done this by now)

merrymelodies · 24/02/2023 21:44

Kill it with fire! 🔥

KattyKattyKatz · 25/02/2023 15:48

To leave that spider under a cup for weeks is the equivalent of locking up someone in a dark room with limited air and no food or water . Get someone to put it outside .

You are right, you are ill informed.

Try learning about phobias.
