How long before it's safe to lift the upturned cup off the spider?

It's been about an hour now...do you think that's long enough to extinguish it? I have visions of leaving it a week and it still scampers off in glee when I lift the cup off! And no, I'm not putting the spider outside - the fall from height would probably be the end of it anyway.

I'm assuming you're all vegan then?

Do they suffocate chickens to make them lay eggs?

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 24/02/2023 18:35

Wolfiefan · 24/02/2023 17:10

It’s a spider. Not a rattlesnake. Don’t suffocate it. Slide a piece of card under the glass, lift and let it go outside.

This. Please don't kill it!!!

Spiders do good work.

I'm assuming you're all vegan then?

That's irrelevant.

Why can't you just take it outdoors?

largeprintagathachristie · 24/02/2023 18:37

Yep, the cup thing is to transport it outside, not kill it!

RaininSummer · 24/02/2023 18:38

This is horrible. Poor spider. Put him outside.

LOL at these replies.

People on here always delight in telling people that they're evil for killing spiders.

Yet those same people will happily kill flies or wasps etc that come in the house and walk along the pavement without a thought to all the tiny little bugs and ants they're killing.

Do what you need to OP. Vacuum is an alternative.

Wasps get windows opened to take themselves out and as for flies - well, that's exactly what the spiders are for, isn't it?

Aurorabored · 24/02/2023 18:41

’It's been about an hour now...do you think that's long enough to extinguish it?’

It’s not a fucking candle.

OneFrenchEgg · 24/02/2023 18:44

I don't kill wasps or ants or spiders and I'm vegan ⭐️🏅

losingit31 · 24/02/2023 18:46

It's outside. Just so you won't be lying awake worrying.

Stop trying to justify killing the bloody thing rather than just putting it out the window.

DottieUncBab · 24/02/2023 18:48

You want to suffocate a spider? Seriously you’re a grown adult!!!!! You horrible person!

pick it up and put it outside of it bothers you that much, I can’t believe you think it’s okay to suffocate it

Just move house and leave the cup.

😆

PatchworkElmer · 24/02/2023 18:54

Did you carry it down or lob it out of the window? 🙄

What you wanted to do was cruel. Understand your point about cognitive dissonance around harming animals- but I’m a vegan and therefore by your reasoning, fully qualified to say that suffocating it to death would be a dick move 😇

Honeyroar · 24/02/2023 18:56

Op you sound pathetic and like you need to grow up. If you can’t dispose of it outside or humanely let it go.

pd339 · 24/02/2023 18:58

Pathetic. Just let it be.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 24/02/2023 18:59

You know what I once had a huge one in my house and it ran under a chest of drawers. Went to put my Toms on the next day (bare feet) and I felt it IN MY SHOE. I battered it with the hoover and felt so bad after. And realised nothing bad happened due to it being in close contact with my foot. It was probably terrified.

Justcallmebebes · 24/02/2023 19:00

Don't kill it. Just put it outside. A fall from height won't kill it but slowly suffocating it to death is cruel

Cocobutt · 24/02/2023 19:09

What a pathetic thread.

Do you seriously have nothing better to do on a Friday night then try and work up some strangers on the internet?

How embarrassing!

If there is a spider then put it in the garden with the other thousands of spiders.

It’s not going to hurt you and you might get a bit of adrenaline which will probably be the most exciting thing to happen to you all month.

GlassBunion · 24/02/2023 19:09

I get your fear.

I'd enlist someone else to remove it.

Else leave it for a long time.

@KattyKattyKatz your name is apt. Have you no empathy for people with a fear of spiders?

To others too who say 'just take it outside' do you not understand???

SinnerBoy · 24/02/2023 19:16

I just move them around the house, out of the way. House spiders and cellar spiders (daddy long legs - not the crane fly) can't survive outside.

We currently have a male house spider, who comes out of the skirting in the bay window at 8 pm nightly, before scuttling to the hearth stone, creeping along it and then scuttling under one of the sofas.

I understand you have phobia and at least you've done your best, it may well get into someone else's house and live another day.

How can you tell the sex of a spider?

SinnerBoy · 24/02/2023 19:26

Male house spiders are easy, they have pedipalps and are the ones scuttling about on your floor. They search out the females, who tend to stay in their hidey holes.

This.

I certainly wouldn't be able to take it outside. And I wouldn't be able to settle in the house while it was still visible. Is it irrational? Yes. But that's what a phobia is. My partner has to rid of any spiders.
