Is anyone going to more effort tonight for a Valentines Dinner?

What are you having?

I'm going old school with a prawn cocktail, lamb, veg and smashed potatoes and I need to decide on a healthy dessert. I'm thinking of baked bananas and honey instead of cake and ice cream.

Takeout sushi for us, after the kids are in bed. We both work FT so it's not fun or relaxing if one of us has to come home after work and cook a fancy meal in a limited amount of time (and we can't cook together or we'll row 😂), so takeout is what works best for us.

MeinKraft · 14/02/2023 14:51

Will probably just order a pizza. I am going to make a Black Forest cheesecake though, possibly today if I can find kirsch anywhere.

ifonly4 · 14/02/2023 14:53

Freezer desperately needs defrosting, but I've got some salmon in a chilli sauce defrosting. Going to do it on a bed of rice and veggies. Followed by a gu dessert (they were on offer😂). Oh, and a glass of wine. We have a nice three tone candle that we were bought for xmas, so might light that as it goes with some pink roses DH bought me.

DH usually does something fancy but he's away with work so DD has offered to have a go at cooking instead (she doesn't cook much usually) which is super sweet of her ❤️❤️

It’s me, the husband and two teenagers so I’ve bought us a big steak each. Will have chips, onion rings and mushrooms to go with them.
For dessert I’m making a brioche bread and butter pudding with a bourbon caramel sauce.
I have some love heart napkins that I bought in poundland a couple of years ago and will probably light a couple of candles!

OneMoreCookieMonster · 14/02/2023 15:02

Full on roast chicken dinner with all the usual sides. Homemade cheesecake for dessert. And, not because its valentines because its a Tuesday and why the fuck not?

longtompot · 14/02/2023 15:02

I am making instead of buying m&s's coquilles st jacques as needs to be dairy free, Mary Berry's sea bass with a lemon and herb Parmesan crust with new pots (our dds are having pasta pesto and chicken nuggets with happy faces) and salad and crepes Suzette for pudding

OneGoodThing · 14/02/2023 15:03

Waitrose Dine in £20 meal deal for us - I got one last night for me and DD as a Galentine's Day treat and it was such a bargain I was straight back in for another today. Instead of wine, you can opt for a bottle of Tails cocktails, which is normally £16 on its own.

Something's gone awry on the supply front, though, as there were no starters or puddings left by the time I was at the tills, so the manager was having to sub in Waitrose tomato soup (disappointing) and fruit salad (oh dear).

WrendaleCountryDogs · 14/02/2023 15:06

KFC 2x fillet bugers and 2x chips for £5.99. I'm single.

sunshinenroses · 14/02/2023 15:07

Mums over to watch the kids and going to get very drunk over a lovely meal! So excited

Phos · 14/02/2023 15:07

No. I’m genuinely perplexed when people over that age of 16 make a big deal of Valentine’s Day.

maddiemookins16mum · 14/02/2023 15:11

Beef stew and dumplings, DH’s favourite. Then pudding (my favourite) sticky toffee pudding and custard.

SweetPetrichor · 14/02/2023 15:14

We’re just having pizza. I’m off ill with a rotten cold so no energy to be fancy…but pizza’s still an unhealthy treat meal, so I’m looking forward to it.

Putting a bit more effort in to a weeknight dinner is hardly 'making a big deal' Confused

No I’m bloody not.

lazarusb · 14/02/2023 15:33

Love the sound of longtompot's sea bass and Suzettes. Enjoy!

It's nice making a bit more effort now and again, especially as DH is going through a rough time at the moment. Last year my dad had just died so we skipped it, the year before that he'd just had a terminal diagnosis out of the blue so we didn't mark it that year either.

Some people love to get sniffy about Valentine's day. I completely get that lots of people find it awful, and it does get shoved down your throat in the supermarket for weeks beforehand (like all of these 'days'), which is tiresome. But I enjoy it and I'm not ashamed! 😊 It's a nice opportunity for a slightly fancy dinner and a bottle of fizz on a weeknight

AnchorWHAT · 14/02/2023 15:42

No idea what i am having DH is cooking for me, he went shopping yesterday and dinner is disguised in a carrier bag in the fridge as a surprise 😁

FizzyStream · 14/02/2023 15:46

I'm making a chicken pathia from scratch but probably would've been making it even if wasn't Valentine's Day.

Novita · 14/02/2023 15:48

I didn't plan anything special for tonight. We are having salmon with mash and white wine sauce. B cause I need white wine for cooking we will have glass of wine with dinner.

Topbird29 · 14/02/2023 15:50

Always eat with kids, but got us tesco dine in for 2 - chicken legs in white wine and tarragon sauce dauphinoise potatoes, asparagus and melt in middle choc puds. They didn't send the prosecco though (and didn't send a sub!). But have something in the fridge anyway. For both DS - grillsteaks with chips and veg, and also choc pud. All easy in oven food, so little prep required!

Meandfour · 14/02/2023 15:52

Steak & homemade triple cooked chips here with peppercorn sauce
I’ve made brownies which we will have warm with vanilla ice cream

Snipples · 14/02/2023 15:52

We're having honey and mustard chicken (recipe from my new slow cooker book)and a Connie the caterpillar valentines cake for after. I had a rose that was looking a bit sorry for itself so planning to put the petals in a glass of rose later too🌹

TheChosenTwo · 14/02/2023 15:53

Dh is home, we are having fillet steak, sautéed potatoes, asparagus and some bread he’s making. We usually have steak on a Friday so he’s decided to make a special effort tonight, plus he asked ds on their way home from a day out and he requested steak as it’s his favourite 😂
