Amazon delivery man just walked into my house.....!

Now, I appreciate that delivery drivers are under time pressures but surely that doesn't extend to opening people's doors and waking into their house??

I'm WFH today in a room next to my front door when my doorbell rings and there is loud banging and knocking on my front door. I get up to answer immediately so it took me a matter of seconds to get to my hallway but when I get there the delivery driver is stood in my hallway! He just said he was looking or somewhere to put my parcel.

He hadn't been knocking long and it is clear on my account where i want my parcels to be put if I'm out.

I'm mad at myself for not locking the door, I usually do but obviously forgot when i answered the door during a call earlier but that doesn't mean strange men can just walk in my house!!

I feel a bit disconcerted if I'm honest.

Firstly, lock your door at all times, I do.

Secondly, contact Amazon, they're usually very good about deliveries that don't meet a good standard and entering your home uninvited is one such situation.

I had one get very aggressive to me in summer as he was knocking on the wrong home with my parcel and then slagged me off for not being at home when he was knocking at the wrong door

I also had one this week who, I answers the door within 10 seconds as I was right next to the door which is open into my lounge, he threw the parcel at me, muttered about he had other deliveries to do and hurry up, then slammed the gate on the way out, driving off at such speed his tyres shrieked.
Amazon were very polite and have given me a free month on my prime account.

Stressybetty · 08/02/2023 15:04

Probably really rushed and couldn't find the time to check your instructions on your account. Really rude and frightening. We've got a locked gate and they usually wait for an answer but had them ringing the bell on the gate and driving off straight away leaving the parcel there or throwing it over the (8 foot high) gates.

This happened to a friend of mine a few years back (not Amazon though!) She was off work and sick in bed, her DH hadn’t locked the front door when he left, and a delivery driver just walked in through the front door, down the hall to the kitchen in front of him and put the parcel on the kitchen table! All she knew was that there was someone in her house that she wasn’t expecting and she was in bed in her PJs.The only response she got when she complained to the company was that he was probably just trying to be helpful…

Hopefully things have moved on a bit since then, and you can report it to Amazon and get a sensible response. Walking into people’s homes is completely inappropriate, still not sure why anyone would even try the door handle when they have a delivery to make.

TrickyD · 08/02/2023 15:07

I am amazed because we recently had a TV delivered from Amazon. DH was not in when it arrived. I asked Amazon man if he’d would be kind enough to put it in the hall. He said they were not allowed to enter houses. So he left it on the step.

Irishfarmer · 08/02/2023 15:10

My postie always leaves parcels into the hall. I was so confused the 1st time, also found it very intrusive. They normally don't even knock. Granted I live in the back ar$e of no where and we don't lock our door during the day.

I'd say he just thought he was being helpful

Fluffygreenslippers · 08/02/2023 15:17

What sort of lock do you have? You can’t open my door from the outside even if it’s unlocked. I might accidentally stab the amazon driver if he wandered into my house!

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 08/02/2023 15:22

They’ve done this to me too. I always lock the door but a visitor hadn’t 🙄

Johnnysgirl · 08/02/2023 15:26

Who leaves their door unlocked and then squawks about someone walking through it? You were lucky he was only delivering a parcel.
What if the next guy's a burglar?

Fluffleupagus · 08/02/2023 15:30

We had this a few weeks ago. We have a sign on the door saying all deliveries in the storage box please (massive plastic box right next to front door), please dont knock or ring bell if possible as I WFH.

I was out, DH heard someone open the front door and assumed it was me (no knock or anything). Next minute all hell breaks loose as strange man enters the house and Ddog starts barking and howling like crazy as he frightened the life out of her. The ring camera shows him swiftly retreating and slamming the door shut muttering 'fucking hell'.

I just can't understand why anyone would think that is an acceptable thing to do. In our case you can clearly see its a door directly into the house, it couldnt be mistaken for a porch door.

KangarooKenny · 08/02/2023 15:34

I had an Amazon driver open my front door as the dog was barking and running at him. I grabbed the dog and told him that he was taking a big risk opening people’s doors.
I wonder what would happen if he was bitten 🤔

ouch321 · 08/02/2023 15:37

If the door was unlocked it's not impossible that he thought it was the porch door.

NancyPickford · 08/02/2023 15:42

I live quite remotely and the door isn't locked during the day. The postman just opens the door and puts any parcels in the hall. But I know it's him as his little red van pulls up outside. I usually get to the door before he's halfway up the path, but on those occasions I don't, eg, on the phone, in the loo, making tea, then he doesn't even knock, just opens the door and puts them on the floor. However, he's been my postman for a very long time so he's not a complete stranger.

MySweetBaboo · 08/02/2023 15:43

I have had this with Amazon. I was once in the shower and didn’t realise the front door wasn’t locked and when I got out and walked downstairs there was an Amazon parcel just sitting in my hall!

VioletaDelValle · 08/02/2023 15:54

I know I should have locked the door ... I usually do.

It's definitely not a porch door and doesn't look like it could be one.

It wasn't even anything of value. It was just a box of cat food!! It clearly stated that on the box too.
I really don't like the idea of strange men just letting themselves into my house.

Yabu.
If a stranger can walk into your home, count yourself lucky it was a delivery driver and not a criminal.

I've said I should have locked the door. It was an error on my part.
That doesn't give someone permission to enter my house uninvited!!!

I am.... I made a mistake and I'm freaked out by it.

Doesn't mean the strange man entering my house was in the right though does it?

No, it doesn't.

Pinkypurplecloud · 08/02/2023 15:59

Complain to Amazon. Yes, they’re rushed, but there’s no reason for them to let themselves into your house! I get annoyed by all the hammering too - half the time they hammer on the door, while ringing the bell, then put it through the door slot anyway. Why not just put it through the slot quietly in the first place…

Hadjab · 08/02/2023 16:01

Completely not the point, but why do so many posters have doors that can just be opened from outside? Where do you get them from? When I shut my front door, it locks. You need a key to open it from outside. I can honestly say I've never actually been to the house of anyone who has a door that can be opened from outside.

1wokeuplikethis · 08/02/2023 16:01

This happened to me. Exact same scenario. I contacted Amazon and as an apology they offered me either a food hamper (random) or £25 credit.

EasilyDirected · 08/02/2023 16:03

I've never lived in a house without a self-locking front door either, but they are a thing, my FIL's house is like that.

I'd complain, they should not be doing that. Where I work they just open the door and drop them in the foyer (we aren't open to the public) but that is very different.

I don't know anyone with a door that can't be opened from the outside!! We were offered an option when we bought our door. I actually asked for one that locks automatically but they fitted the wrong lock.
