Amazon delivery man just walked into my house.....!

Now, I appreciate that delivery drivers are under time pressures but surely that doesn't extend to opening people's doors and waking into their house??

I'm WFH today in a room next to my front door when my doorbell rings and there is loud banging and knocking on my front door. I get up to answer immediately so it took me a matter of seconds to get to my hallway but when I get there the delivery driver is stood in my hallway! He just said he was looking or somewhere to put my parcel.

He hadn't been knocking long and it is clear on my account where i want my parcels to be put if I'm out.

I'm mad at myself for not locking the door, I usually do but obviously forgot when i answered the door during a call earlier but that doesn't mean strange men can just walk in my house!!

I feel a bit disconcerted if I'm honest.

This happened to me. Exact same scenario. I contacted Amazon and as an apology they offered me either a food hamper (random) or £25 credit.

How did you complain? Everything I've found so far has been automated and there isn't an option to complain about a driver.... I might not have looked hard enough yet though.

Oops sorry @Hadjab my stupid phone!

On our door to lock from the inside you have to twist a knob, from the outside you have to lock it with the key in the yale lock. It's the first door I've ever had like this though, in all our other houses if the door slammed behind you and you were outside you were locked out!

Completely not the point, but why do so many posters have doors that can just be opened from outside? Where do you get them from? When I shut my front door, it locks. You need a key to open it from outside. I can honestly say I've never actually been to the house of anyone who has a door that can be opened from outside.

We have an ordinary UPVC front door with the kind of handle you pull up to throw the bolts and then lock with a key. I hate Yale lock front doors, I’d lock myself out.

Looking down my street I’d say 95% of us have the same type of door, though some newer ones are the fancy composite material. Perfectly common normal door, you just need to get into the habit of locking it.

This kind of door (the kind that opens with just a handle from outside) was the door that came with the house. All the houses round her have them and I haven't got round to repalcing it yet.

Our postie once walked into the house to deliver something. Once he'd calmed down from seeing 35kg of dog fly towards him while barking loudly at him, he never did it again Grin

I think we have similar doors, but with ours, if it shuts and you're outside, its not actually locked, but very much un-openable without a key.

Sorry to derail the thread OP!!

There is absolutely no excuse in this scenario to enter your home.

I'm guessing this was a man?

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 08/02/2023 16:13

You shouldn't have OP but I reluctantly agree to locking the door going forward

We had this a few weeks ago. We have a sign on the door saying all deliveries in the storage box please (massive plastic box right next to front door), please dont knock or ring bell if possible as I WFH.

I was out, DH heard someone open the front door and assumed it was me (no knock or anything). Next minute all hell breaks loose as strange man enters the house and Ddog starts barking and howling like crazy as he frightened the life out of her. The ring camera shows him swiftly retreating and slamming the door shut muttering 'fucking hell'.

I just can't understand why anyone would think that is an acceptable thing to do. In our case you can clearly see its a door directly into the house, it couldnt be mistaken for a porch door.

Your pooch is awesome Grin

I had an Amazon driver open my front door as the dog was barking and running at him. I grabbed the dog and told him that he was taking a big risk opening people’s doors.
I wonder what would happen if he was bitten 🤔

❤️ this too

Two men actually, although only one entered the house. The other was at my gate. I shouted at them both but got no apology just a shrug before they walked off.

I have had this with Amazon. I was once in the shower and didn’t realise the front door wasn’t locked and when I got out and walked downstairs there was an Amazon parcel just sitting in my hall!

This is the thing sometimes you can forget.

The onus is on entitled idiots not to enter your home

I usually do lock the door.
I'd unlocked it to answer the door earlier the in day while on a Teams call and in my rush obviously forgot to lock it again.

I've had this with a yodel driver a few times!!!! Just walks in! I always lock my door now

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 08/02/2023 16:18

Wow. So 2! And it hasn't entered their heads how frightening and intimidating this could seem?

Hey ho OP. Take it as a reminder to lock up

Who leaves their door unlocked and then squawks about someone walking through it? You were lucky he was only delivering a parcel.
What if the next guy's a burglar?

Squawks? What are you talking about?

Just because a door isn't locked it doesn't mean anyone who wants to should walk through it.

pattihews · 08/02/2023 16:22

They do this to me, too. I work upstairs and although I can hear them it might take me all of 30 seconds to get to the door. By that time they've sometimes opened the front door and left the package in the hall. Not Amazon, by the way. No longer use Amazon.

And no, I'm not going to start locking the door. No one round here does unless they're out.

Craftybodger · 08/02/2023 16:27

I’ve lived in the same house for several decades. The only time a delivery person has ever let themselves in was during lockdown. He knocked and walked straight in, no time to answer the door. I made my feelings and shock very clear at a very loud volume, he retreated hastily. Until then the door was usually unlocked during the day - the burglar alarm warbles if the door is opened. Now it’s locked almost always, key in during the day and key hanging out of the way overnight.

🤷🏻‍♀️ The solution is in your own hands. Why are you so adamant that you need the door open when you're upstairs?

MysteryBelle · 08/02/2023 16:32

That would scare the living daylights out of me if someone just walked into my house. It is absolutely unacceptable for the delivery guy to do that.

That said, I wonder if these delivery people are afraid of leaving pkgs which may get stolen and then they’re accused of it. My husband worked as a delivery driver for a while when covid restrictions took away his job. And it’s a lot of pressure, not enough drivers to deliver two drivers’ worth of pkgs. And one guy apparently was fired because of a mixup, the employer has no way of knowing if the worker did the mixup or not so had to fire him. My husband was grateful for the work but was glad when he was employed in his field again.

Also, the driver may just may be very naive or is allowed to drop pkgs inside for other people. I remember when I was young, newly married, and my husband and I were driving around looking for houses. There was a for sale sign and we stopped thinking we could knock and be shown around,
. The owner opened the door and informed us that we needed to call the agent for a viewing. How stupid of us. Why should she let two strangers into her house. Sometimes I think many of us assume everybody is our friend and neighbor and they should know we are decent people and can just come in haha. Nope!

SallySailor · 08/02/2023 16:41

Two of them?
Quite unusual. With one at the gate and one walking straight in I might be a paranoid londoner, but i'd be worried they were out to 'case some joints' at the same time!

VioletaDelValle · 08/02/2023 16:44

I did think it was unusual that there were two of them. I've logged it with Amazon anyhow.

If they were on the look out then they will see the CCTV and associated signs very clearly so hopefully were put off! You can't do anything out of the ordinary around here without someone noticing!!

MysteryBelle · 08/02/2023 16:57

It was two of them? They both came in? 😳 Was the pkg heavy requiring 2 of them? We had a treadmill delivered once and of course it took two to carry it in and it was part of the delivery plan to bring it inside the house.

Hopefully you reported it, I haven’t read whole thread.

Lock your door. You usually do but I have neighbors who never lock their doors or cars and then they’re shocked when they walk into the kitchen and find a ne’er do well standing there who just came in their back door. Yes that happened. Or that their cars were rifled through.

MysteryBelle · 08/02/2023 16:57

Sorry, just saw you reported it. I missed the last part.
