Now, I appreciate that delivery drivers are under time pressures but surely that doesn't extend to opening people's doors and waking into their house??

I'm WFH today in a room next to my front door when my doorbell rings and there is loud banging and knocking on my front door. I get up to answer immediately so it took me a matter of seconds to get to my hallway but when I get there the delivery driver is stood in my hallway! He just said he was looking or somewhere to put my parcel.

He hadn't been knocking long and it is clear on my account where i want my parcels to be put if I'm out.

I'm mad at myself for not locking the door, I usually do but obviously forgot when i answered the door during a call earlier but that doesn't mean strange men can just walk in my house!!

I feel a bit disconcerted if I'm honest.

I don't understand why he'd open the door in the 1st place. If he's knocked and there's no reply, then that's it. Why on earth try to open the door? I'm surprised in this day and age that a delivery driver wouldnt be scared of false accusations. When you've trespassed into someone's house they can accuse you of anything. You just never know.

He didn't even give me chance to answer the door! Rang the bell, banged on the door and opened the door in less than10 secs!

All our couriers, posties open the front door and leave parcels in the porch. But we are rural.....

SchoolTripDrama · 10/02/2023 19:13

I once opened my living room door - after blow drying my hair in the living room whilst wrapped in a towel - to find a postman stood in the living room doorway! What made it even scarier was that I’d just been watching Michael Jackson’s funeral and the postie was a dead ringer!!! Not even joking. I screamed louder than I knew to be possible

WhenisitmyturntobePM · 10/02/2023 19:28

Our postie always lets himself in and leaves parcels on the kitchen table. I consider it all part of the service. In fact one day his Jack Russell puppy followed him out of the van and into our kitchen, and I walked in the find my dog, the puppy and the postie all running in circles. It was glorious and I chuckled for days.

MammaEvz3 · 11/02/2023 11:06

Wow really? Leaving the door unlocked does not give them permission to just walk in! Absolutely not.

afinishedkiss · 11/02/2023 14:33

Min always leaves mine in the hall and very grateful I am too as I WFH and don't hear the door if I am on a call.

Stuffynosetime · 11/02/2023 14:42

Oh god, I’d not have complained, he was trying to be helpful, I understand he over stepped but they will normally fire him. If there were two he was being trained, which would stop dismissal.

the pay is so low, for such a lot of work, he could have kids to feed, ffs.

sueelleker · 11/02/2023 14:55

Fluffleupagus; most of my drivers seem unable to read signs. My front door opens outwards, as I have a very small hallway and it's more practical-I have THREE signs on the door at different heights saying this, and most of them still leave packages on the doormat. Some can be pushed when I open the door, but it''s not so easy with a 15kg bag of dog food.

lmw124 · 12/02/2023 05:24

I this not the very definition of victim blaming. Surely one should be free to leave their front door open without the expectation of I'll consequences.

NewKittenSlave · 12/02/2023 07:36

This happened to me. I was within sight of the door at the time, but was just too gobsmacked to say anything. I've started locking the door more often since then.

Burglars and psychos don't tend to ask permission.

Locking your door is a very simple thing to do. If you're going to complain about people letting themselves in, then lock the door. Personally I can't imagine doing that but I'm from London. Plenty of people on this thread say they would be OK with it.

EXACTLY!
Don't want strangers turning up in your hall?
There's an easy solution for that.

I think I was right to complain. Nobody should be walking into a house uninvited.

Again, I know I should have locked the door but I forgot this one time.

Still doesn't give anyone the right to just walk into my house.

Multiple people on this thread have said this is normal for them. Clearly some people leave their doors unlocked and are OK with deliveries being put Indoors. Some of them prefer it.

Crazy to me, but then I'd never, ever leave my door unlocked.

How is anyone supposed to know that you're not ok with it? People who don't want other people wandering in lock their doors.

If it's not second nature to you then I think you should change the type of door you have as a matter of urgency.

This time it was an amazon delivery. Next time who knows?

pensionconfusion · 12/02/2023 10:14

The postman used to do this for me pre covid when they couldn't leave parcels on the doorstep. I was ok with it as they didn't come right in just opened the door and left the parcel inside.

Sorry but what a ridiculous thing to say. An unlocked door is NOT an invitation to walk into someone's house. It doesn't matter if you're a delivery driver or not......

You'll notice that those who say it's normal for them to have parcels left in their house are mainly talking about regular delivery drivers or posties.

jeffgoldblum · 12/02/2023 11:26

Walking uninvited into someone else's house uninvited, is not the normal way to behave, true burglars could walk in but during the day in places other than cities, they normally wait till dark or when people are out as neighbours and ring doorbells mean they are likely to be seen!

jeffgoldblum · 12/02/2023 15:09

Just out of interest, I have Amazon delivery often and it's never happened before but ..
Where I sit I can see the front door and my door is always locked but I've just seen the man try my door handle!
My dogs started barking and only then did he knock on the door!!
I'm amazed in all these years it's never happened is it a new thing ?
Delivery drivers opening front doors!

R18 · 12/02/2023 16:31

Hi I just saw your post I had locked my front door and my Amazon man still tried the door handle to get in I could even hear him trying to push it open when I asked him what he was doing he laughed and said here love then went away. I Leave a note saying leave here.

jeffgoldblum · 12/02/2023 16:46

Wow at @R18 ! , what an odd coincidence, maybe this is a new thing.
I've never had it before, even guests and family knock , they don't walk straight in.

sueelleker · 12/02/2023 19:36

Even my dogwalker rings the bell, and he's got a key! (In case I'm out when he arrives)

They shouldn't walk into your house....definitely not. But since covid and COL, I'd much rather a parcel left inside my door than on the street in full view, lobbed over a fence a d potentially broken or put in a bin that's waiting to be collected.

But then I was brought up in villages/towns where doors were never locked.

PARunnerGirl · 13/02/2023 00:53

I couldn’t and wouldn’t complain about this. 😔The job is hard enough. But like some other posters, I live very rurally and the postie or couriers always just open the door and put parcels in the hall. I can see how if you live in a different sort of place it might be unusual and disconcerting. But if it worried me I’d probably just remind myself to lock my door from now on and forget about it.
