Amazon delivery man just walked into my house.....!

Now, I appreciate that delivery drivers are under time pressures but surely that doesn't extend to opening people's doors and waking into their house??

I'm WFH today in a room next to my front door when my doorbell rings and there is loud banging and knocking on my front door. I get up to answer immediately so it took me a matter of seconds to get to my hallway but when I get there the delivery driver is stood in my hallway! He just said he was looking or somewhere to put my parcel.

He hadn't been knocking long and it is clear on my account where i want my parcels to be put if I'm out.

I'm mad at myself for not locking the door, I usually do but obviously forgot when i answered the door during a call earlier but that doesn't mean strange men can just walk in my house!!

I feel a bit disconcerted if I'm honest.

Two delivery drivers but only one came into the house. The other waited at the gate.
Definitely wasn't a heavy parcel - just a box of cat food!!

Royal Mail asked if I had a dog ( I do) and will only deliver to the mailbox or if I answer the door. The only person that tried to open my front door (it was locked) was a blind fitter. I don't know why I felt awkward but I did.

Quveas · 08/02/2023 17:23

I'm astonished anyone sees the Amazon derived man. Around here he hammers on the door, dumps the parcel there, and is 20 miles away before you can get to the door. Of course, if you aren't in the parcel won't be there by the time you get back either.

My postie always leaves parcels into the hall. I was so confused the 1st time, also found it very intrusive. They normally don't even knock. Granted I live in the back ar$e of no where and we don't lock our door during the day.

I'd say he just thought he was being helpful

Same here. We are in Welsh farming country.

Velvetbee · 08/02/2023 17:37

Our door opens from the outside without a key, we requested it so the kids can come and go.
We leave ours unlocked in the day as we’re in a very safe area.
The Amazon guy did open the door once to drop off a parcel, he hadn’t knocked and I happened to be standing in the hall with the dog. She went bananas and he beat a hasty retreat.

Who leaves their door unlocked and then squawks about someone walking through it? You were lucky he was only delivering a parcel.
What if the next guy's a burglar?

What?? It's her fault for leaving the door unlocked? Not the person who tried the handle from the outside??

I had an Amazon driver open my front door as the dog was barking and running at him. I grabbed the dog and told him that he was taking a big risk opening people’s doors.
I wonder what would happen if he was bitten 🤔

@KangarooKenny I've got a feeling you'd be liable. If your front door was unlocked & your dog attacked a delivery person they could sue you & potentially it would have bad repercussions for your dog too. Might have to be muzzled in public all the time or kept on a lead etc (or even destroyed if the person was badly mauled etc).

Even though he was trespassing 🤔

SirSniffsAlot · 09/02/2023 10:10

From my understanding...

It will come down to the extent of the attack, the specitifc actions of the delivery person and the extent to which you knew in advance there was a risk that someone might enter and/or the dog might bite.

A single bite that doesn't break skin to someone who walking well into the house for the first time and from a dog with no prior aggression? Probably fine.

Multiple bites, breaking skin, to someone who just opened the door to lean inside and from a dog already known to have displayed aggressive behaviour? Much less so.

Worth also remembering that trespass is a civil matter (not a crime, unless in very specific circumstances: mainly raves) and a dog being dangerously out of control is a criminal matter.

Our Amazon delivery people (actually also yodel and evri too) are brilliant, they always just ring the bell after putting the package in the porch. I'm invariably in the lounge so they wave as they leave. Nice guys.

Lock your door, very simple

Lock your door, very simple

Yeah I know...and as I explained I usually do.

Still doesn't give someone the right to walk into my house though does it?

Gingerkittykat · 09/02/2023 13:01

This happened to me, I reported it to Amazon and the logistics manager contacted me. They took it really seriously and also sent a hamper to apologise.

There was a previous thread about a delivery driver letting himself into someone's house and I was shocked at the number of people attacking the OP and saying it was entirely appropriate and they were a big bad meanie for wanting to get the driver into trouble.

I normally keep my door locked but had popped out to the shop and left it unlocked with my teenage DD inside. I was furious that it happened. I am now even more careful about keeping my door locked all the time.

LadyJ2023 · 09/02/2023 13:08

Tbh where we live in a quiet part of the country its normal slip the parcel in a door or window. Local driver is known anyhow. Saves having to wait in for a re delivery and the hassle of it

VioletaDelValle · 08/02/2023 16:04

How did you complain? Everything I've found so far has been automated and there isn't an option to complain about a driver.... I might not have looked hard enough yet though.

Go to contact us on the bottom right of the homepage. It will take you to your orders. Click you have a problem with the order (just make up a reason if they don't have one that fits). It will then take you through more automated bits and eventually it will get you to a bit that says if you need more help you can get through to webchat with customer service or have them phone you.

If the door was unlocked it's not impossible that he thought it was the porch door.

I thought this too.

Ignore those berating you for not locking your door OP! I never used to lock mine until our postman also opened my front door to put a parcel in, and my large, very protective dog skidded across the floors towards him haha!
The other 3 went bananas barking too. He was lucky I was there. I always lock my door now when DH goes out to work.

There is no way they thought it was a porch door. It's clearly a door straight into my house.

Thank you . I found it in the end and put in a complaint.

I live quite remotely and the door isn't locked during the day. The postman just opens the door and puts any parcels in the hall. But I know it's him as his little red van pulls up outside. I usually get to the door before he's halfway up the path, but on those occasions I don't, eg, on the phone, in the loo, making tea, then he doesn't even knock, just opens the door and puts them on the floor. However, he's been my postman for a very long time so he's not a complete stranger.

It can't be just me that's reading this post to the tune of "Postman Pat", surely...?

NancyPickford · 09/02/2023 14:35

@EvenMoreFuriousVexation - alas, no black and white cat!

sianiboo · 09/02/2023 14:50

@Gingerkittykat It might have been my thread (different user name). Same scenario, Amazon delivery driver somehow got into my building (must have buzzed another flat for access) my flat door was locked, but they tried to let themselves in, twice... I was in bed ill with covid at the time, half asleep and got the shock of my life....them rattling and turning the handle was loud enough to wake me up! They didn't leave the parcel outside the flat door, either, which was clearly stated in the delivery instructions. I managed to get the car reg of the delivery driver before they left.

I contacted Amazon, they couldn't have cared less. Reported it to the Police, as well...which many on here would no doubt see as an overreaction, but years previously I had had 3 men hold me at knife point in my own house during a burglary, they also sexually assaulted me. Since that date I've never lived in a residence with a front door that opens directly onto the street, and I've always made sure my front door is locked at all times. Hence why I was so shocked - and angry - when someone tried to let themselves into my flat. Police weren't much use either, but at least it was on record if the delivery driver did it again.

DeeCeeCherry · 09/02/2023 15:47

I don't understand why he'd open the door in the 1st place. If he's knocked and there's no reply, then that's it. Why on earth try to open the door? I'm surprised in this day and age that a delivery driver wouldnt be scared of false accusations. When you've trespassed into someone's house they can accuse you of anything. You just never know.

jtaeapa · 09/02/2023 15:56

It's certainly odd behaviour for him to walk right in, but as you said, you can avoid this by locking the door.

I got my front door changed from one of those ones because I think they are a security risk. When I shut mine, you can't then open it from the outside, even if it isn't locked. You can just use the door handle and still open it from the inside though.
