Jack Monroe flounced from Twitter - Again

This time it looks like she was caught out in regard to addiction faking.

She posted a photo claiming they were of her recovery chip thingies and it was noted that 1 of them was for Cocaine Anonymous and another was for Narcotics anonymous.

She'd denied cocaine use earlier.

Early January she was in the Guardian saying she'd blown to s of donated money on Drink, tramadol and Cotswolds sideboards.
Seems the oddities of her stories are catching up with her.

Curious case of honest mistakes of someone who does good?
Or a devious chancer that's raking in as much as 30k a month of other people's money for doing nothing?

I don't think she's well. I think she's seriously ill and should stay off all media. Don't know about the coke chip thing.

I have a genuine question for which I'm sure I'll be shredded... but why is Mumsnet so obsessed with her? I see no end of these threads and whilst I'm no fan of hers, I think the vitriol spewed in her direction is disproportionate and unnecessary. So, she's come off Twitter - so what? Are you all really that invested in her that you need to make another thread and slag her off? Don't you have anything better to do?!

(Don't get me started on the way so many users here are obsessed with Meghan Markle...)

I didn't know she'd come back after the last time! So they were hers and she was lying about cocaine addiction, or neither belonged to her?

She always sounds like her life was in chaos and she likes having people fund her not to work. I'd recently had my eyes opened to it and I was one of those who bought the original cookery books and believed the stories about unscrewing lightbulbs.

@nxa I think it's because of people being taken in by her and perhaps donating. I was one of those people, until reading the threads, and I didn't believe it at first and was convinced she did some good.

Well, I didn't know that she did that. That is pretty low. I knew she was full of stories but didn't think any of them were particularly bad, but if she's trying to con people out of it then that's another matter entirely.

@nxa a lot of people on MN are also on other social media outlets where Jack is prolific such as Tattle life and Twitter. She was also on British screens and still features in British media. Do you live in the UK?

I also have ADHD so I can understand where a lot of her behavior comes from but she really needs to sort herself out. She will be back on Twitter soon enough though.

I've no opinion on JM but there are a lot of dodgy influencers out there making money from gullible followers (and I don't mean clicks) With sums like £30k per month mentioned I can totally see why people are keeping an eye on this. JM is a champion for people on low incomes and if people donating to her are low income then I see why people are pointing out the inconsistencies.

Probably not worth commenting on this thread then 😂.

Anyway… I think the reason people are so invested in this is because many of us have supported her in the past, financially and otherwise, and it’s a bit of a kick in the teeth when she confesses to having spent a lot of that money on alcohol and luxury furniture, while simultaneously claiming to be so poor that she’s having to unscrew her lightbulbs.

A number of factors:

  • She used to be a MNer and a lot of fans from the early days started here.
  • Using the strict rules against attacking other MNers she would report any thread about her whenever anything critical was posted- this went on for a looong time where literally no thread about her survived. I think this generated some resentment from people who posted reasonable questions and felt picked on.
  • Quite a lot of people on here have lost money to her scams. I think the crowfunder to self-publish a book was a big turning point.
  • MNers in general don't like con artists. Just look at the hostility on any thread about psychics, rogue traders or TYOJ.

She didn’t actually provide any of the promised rewards for over 2 years. She now claims to have ‘caught up’ and sent the rewards in December, but so far none of her patreons seem to have received them.

What I think might also be at the root of why so many people focus on JM is that on the face of it she is someone who (if they were trustworthy and honest) most people would really support and agree with, and many people who are 'on the same side' are her biggest cheerleaders. I mean, who can argue with fighting against poverty and support for people with disabilities?
But the possibility that she's just a grifter who is manipulating people for her own purposes, and using the poverty crisis as a means to a selfish end, is even more infuriating.
So they're trying to expose her and prove other people wrong.

She's made that mistake a number of times before. Her 'Georgian cook book' (she used an image of the wrong Georgia) was hysterical.
