I like watching things like NCIS.

Over the years, I’ve heard the phrase watch your six and just let it fly over my head expecting not to understand it.

Literally the other day, it suddenly occurred to me…it means watch your back!!

Of course it does!

...why does it?

00100001 · 28/01/2023 18:45

Nvm. Worked it out.

00100001 · 28/01/2023 18:48

Never heard the expression before.

Anyway, something that took a while to register for me, is the word discipline and disciple are the same and to discipline someone (usually a child) actually means to teach ... Which is absolutely not the same as punishment. But I used to conflate the two.

Well, that’s something else new for me Grin

And yeah, once you work out what it means, (watch your six), it’s suddenly obvious

I've never heard the expression - and have no idea why it would mean to watch your back Confused

Why does it mean watch your back??

InTheFutilityRoomEatingBiscuits · 28/01/2023 19:00

It means watch your 6 o clock position. Ie straight forward is 12, so 6 is your back.

Because of the clock - 12 o'clock in front, 6 o'clock is opposite so behind you

Guessing it comes from police or military speak.
I was 24 before I realised the Bob was short for Robert.

WeWereInParis · 28/01/2023 19:05

Madame Gazelle on peppa pig is French, and her name is a play on the word mademoiselle. I didn't realise that for ages.

We recently had a Harry start at work and one of the staff was quite indignant that IT had set his email address as Henry. We explained that Harry was a nickname for Henry and about half the staff didn't know this.

I didn’t realise until I was in my thirties that raisins are dried grapes.

WFHbore2023 · 28/01/2023 19:11

I was embarrassingly old when I realise le that you have to pay for all water, not just the expense of making it hot

WeThreeKingsofOrientAre · 28/01/2023 19:32

One thing I only recently found out about was that there’s a difference between spider webs and cobwebs. Cobwebs are old abandoned spider webs 🕷 😎

Do you remember the smarties adverts from the 80's and 90's.
A few years ago, I suddenly understood why 'only smarties have the answer'.
😂

One day I sat on the tube in London and realised why the Bakerloo line is called that. Two of the main stops are Baker Street and Waterloo.

TherebytheGraceofGodgoI · 28/01/2023 20:14

Heard on the radio this week where we get the word raspberries from, as in blowing raspberries.
It’s Cockney rhyming! Raspberry tart! Never realised!

MMBaranova · 28/01/2023 20:14

Fortnight is making me reassess my existence.

georgethegeranium · 28/01/2023 20:16
