I like watching things like NCIS.

Over the years, I’ve heard the phrase watch your six and just let it fly over my head expecting not to understand it.

Literally the other day, it suddenly occurred to me…it means watch your back!!

Of course it does!

That your cervix opens a little each month to let the blood out. Not sure how I thought it was getting through.
Cramps made so much more sense after learning that.

PuttingDownRoots · 28/01/2023 20:35

Those light sticks in Star Wars? I thought they were called lightsavers.

Light SABRES. As in light-sword.

TwoMonthsOff · 28/01/2023 20:35

@Soubriquet
they say that a lot ^^on SWAT - I had to look it up as well 😅

WashAsDelicates · 28/01/2023 20:36

Currants. I thought they were a weird form of raisin, maybe made from smaller, poorer quality grapes. Didn't occur to me until I was in my 40s that they were...currants. Dried currants. Currants just like the ones my dm grew in the garden, which I had been picking and eating pretty much all my life.

Still think they taste weird and nasty.

When you turn a bottle of toilet duck on its side, it looks like a duck

DinosApple · 28/01/2023 20:36

I knew about fortnight. I'm sure I read in Pride and Prejudice se'n night (seven nights) which has been lost to modern English when we studied it for GCSE.

I thought sprouts grew like mini cabbages in rows until I was in my early 20s. My dad came home with a stalk of them from the market one Christmas. Blew my mind 😆.

The sky is blue midday and red/orange/yellow in the evening. Why?

obviously I KNEW this was the case, but it never really sunk in enough to wonder why?

Cherry60 · 28/01/2023 20:45

'Nedmund' 😂😂

DH and DS were shocked to discover I didn't actually know that the Earth orbits the Sun. Not sure how that happened 🤷

Silkrose · 28/01/2023 20:45

The Christmas carol is ‘good king wen-ces-las’ not ‘good king wenslas [last looked out…]’

Bytrgrewd · 28/01/2023 20:46

I was in my thirties when I realised that when I was a kid and my mum and dad were in the bedroom and the asked me to go away and shut the door because they needed to talk about something important that they probably weren’t discussing whether to get me a pony… 😳

I don't understand the expression 'Just giving you a heads up'. Can anyone explain it?

scorcio5 · 28/01/2023 20:52

I am a degree educated professional 43yr old woman and it was only last year that I discovered that a Passport is named as such because that's what it does, it allows you to pass through ports 🙈Blush

Oh yes I always thought this too!

I also thought the quote "Houston, we have a problem" was them talking to a man with the name Houston, and telling him that there was a problem.

EricNorthmanYesPlease · 28/01/2023 20:56

This thread is amazing, and im embarrassed at how many i only learned this evening.

However... i found out 2 days ago that the price labels on the shelves in Aldi are electronic. Not paper.

MarchionessOfMayhem · 28/01/2023 20:57

I've only just realised that Diagon Alley in Harry Potter is Diagonally! 😆

tocahairchop · 28/01/2023 20:57

Passports? 🤯🤯🤯

Joytotheworld88 · 28/01/2023 20:59

I only learned the other day that 'pram' is actually short for perambulator which comes from perambulate which means to walk! Language is so clever how it evolves.

Theunamedcat · 28/01/2023 21:00

See also "on your six" means I'm right behind you

Thank you NCIS 😂
