I like watching things like NCIS.

Over the years, I’ve heard the phrase watch your six and just let it fly over my head expecting not to understand it.

Literally the other day, it suddenly occurred to me…it means watch your back!!

Of course it does!

Won't be long before there's MN triplets/ siblings; Balonz, Barold and Nedmund 🤣

scorcio5 · 28/01/2023 21:34

@FindRod I'm not going to lie, I was wounded when I realised, 🥺
I then asked DM and was informed that he was 15, and had cancer so it was the kindest thing to be PTS, ( she still looked at me as if to say ' you have only just realised 🤦‍♀️) 🤣

@Soubriquet
gots me thinking….another one I keep hearing is “T minus ten minutes’
I’ve tried to work that one out but I still don’t know what the T means

they’re often saying it in the American nonsense shows I watch

T for Time (when an event is to happen). So T minus ten minutes means there's ten minutes until it's Time for the event to occur.

You may now be able to work out what the D in D Day and the H in H Hour stand for.

Another time-related one for fans of NCIS and military type shows is Zulu time. Which is UTC (which we'd know in the UK as GMT, but for reasons that's only the time zone rather than standard time).

This thread is amazing, and im embarrassed at how many i only learned this evening.

However... i found out 2 days ago that the price labels on the shelves in Aldi are electronic. Not paper.

Same! 😱

Travellingraspberry · 28/01/2023 21:38

Took me quite a while to twig that in Winnie the Pooh the characters Kanga and little roo together make up the word Kangaroo!

Also howling at Barold!

stormelf · 28/01/2023 20:23

I was in my late 20s when I realised Ned was short for Edward. I just assumed it was short for Nedmund

😂 Amazing. To be fair, I never knew what it was short for - just that it was short for something!

catsnore · 28/01/2023 21:39

Omg, Barold!!! Can't stop laughing and have a baby asleep on me 😂

DogInATent · 28/01/2023 21:39

TwoMonthsOff · 28/01/2023 21:30

@Soubriquet
So not only are they meant to be storming some drug cartels operational headquarters with unknown personnel and their firepower….you have to work out time minus something ?? It’s lucky I’m not in the elite forces obviously everyone would have to have my six at all times 😭

No, it's so you don't have to do the maths.

You're storming the cartel hideout at 1600, right now it's 1550. But because you're told that it's T minus 10 minutes (1600 - 10 = 1550) you know straightaway the important information, that its 10 minutes to kickoff.

Madame Gazelle on peppa pig is French, and her name is a play on the word mademoiselle. I didn't realise that for ages.

I remember excitedly screaming this at DH when DD was 2… “omg!!!! It’s Madame Gazelle!!!! It’s Mademoiselle!!! Do you get it? Do you?”

He looked at me.. “oh. Didn’t you know”

😑😑

Deadringer · 28/01/2023 21:41

I put this on another thread, but I only realised very recently why its called a qwerty keyboard. 🙄

That is pretty much exactly what happened in our house too

TwoMonthsOff · 28/01/2023 21:43

@DogInATent
thanks dog….really ‘it’s you it’s me’ I’m just not cut out for it 😭

And Garth in Wayne’s World …….’excellent’ 😭😭

I had to Google this. It's not Mike Myers it's someone else from SNL - Dana Carvey

m.imdb.com/name/nm0001022/

sorry to be pendentic but that screws with me head 😂

TwoMonthsOff · 28/01/2023 21:44

@DogInATent
meant it’s not you it’s me 😭

one of those things 🤯🤯🤯

It literally just means “it’s happening in 10 minutes”.

Whatever the time is, (t minus 10 minutes, t minus 5 seconds, t minus 5 hours whatever it is) that time is when the thing is happening. So if you had to leave the house in 5 minutes time, it would be t minus 5 minutes.

TwoMonthsOff · 28/01/2023 21:45

@Nicewarmfeet
already got my ashamed face on a PP said dr evil /Austin powers is Wayne not Garth 😭

3beesinmybonnet · 28/01/2023 21:45

I just assumed 'heads up' referred to meerkats tbh

TwoMonthsOff · 28/01/2023 21:46

This thread is funny

NewBootsAndRanty · 28/01/2023 21:47

@Nicewarmfeet pendentic is a fantastic typo there!

HunterHearstHelmsley · 28/01/2023 21:47

Adam Ant is adamant. I felt a fool.

Also, Major Tom dies at the end 💔

ElizabethBest · 28/01/2023 21:47

@TwoMonthsOff it just means the number minutes left until it’s time to do something. So if we were going to leave the house at 9am, and it’s 8:45am, it would be T minus 15 minutes as in there’s 15 minutes until it’s time to go.

Joytotheworld88 · 28/01/2023 20:59

I only learned the other day that 'pram' is actually short for perambulator which comes from perambulate which means to walk! Language is so clever how it evolves.

OMG! My late grandfather always used to call them a prambulator and it always made us (the grandchildren and great grandchildren) laugh so much. I always thought it was just a silly word he made up to make us all laugh…. Until… well…. I just read your post 😳😳😳

Builtforcomfortbutnotspeed · 28/01/2023 21:48

Yesterday I was saying that I’d ordered a new ring for my right hand finger

my dp asked why I just didn’t use an old ring that I used to wear on my left hand finger

his mind was blown when I explained (and showed using a ring sizer) that fingers are different sizes
