What can I do with my living room (pic)

I have made a start on my living room . I can't paint or wallpaper at the moment. I was thinking I could put something on the walls with command strips/simlar. Some sort of canvas /wall art. I don't know what though 😕.

All the furniture looks very squished up in one corner and it looks as though you can't see the tv from that sofa (but good position for view/light from the window).
Have you looked at pinterest for inspiration /ideas in styles you like?

StaceySolomonSwash · 19/01/2023 13:43

Bring the sofa down the room and away from the wall. Get a coffee table for the centre of the room. A couple of lamps would look good with a coordinating rug/cushions.

The sofa is pushed up like that because my kids go on the corner and camp and leave loads of shit down there 😅. No one really watches TV from that sofa. I'm sittmg on the other sofa from where the pic is being taken.

I have looked a bit . But some places confuse me . I might see a picture then it turns out you only get the print not the frame . Or the size it not as it seems. Then I go brain dead.

You need some colour, maybe a feature wall. The sofa looks odd huddled up in the corner and then one right at the back of the room it doesn't look very cosy.

Maybe some little tables & lamps? :)

GooseberryCinnamonYogurt · 19/01/2023 13:46

A rug in the centre would improve the look. IKEA have large reasonably priced pictures - it all looks so bare as it is. How about a couple of floor lamps too?

MadeForThis · 19/01/2023 13:48

Rug
Plants
Something in the middle of the floor - table?
Beanbags for kids?
Lamps

Fullsomefrenchie · 19/01/2023 13:49

The other sofa is very far away from tv and everything shoved in corners and up against walls.

id pull the sofas out to make a nice close sitting area with a rug in the middle

is it rented, if so then I’d caution against command strips they tend to pull paint off the wall when removed and cause some damage

Paq · 19/01/2023 13:51

If no one watches the tv I'd get rid of it. It looks a mess stuck up there with no furniture surrounding it.

boobot1 · 19/01/2023 13:51

Get some large blank canvas and cover in a wallpaper of your choice

Divebar2021 · 19/01/2023 13:53

You need to soften the room up. Definitely a rug in a non cold colour way. Pull the sofa out the corner and add an armchair if you can. A couple of side tables with lamps and then maybe a throw over the back of the sofa. The curtains are not helping too much either so I’d switch those over too if you can afford it. Pictures you can buy with frames from suppliers like Society 6 buy I’d sort the other elements first.

Divebar2021 · 19/01/2023 13:54

Plants are a good shout too

mintdaisy · 19/01/2023 13:55

If you looking for prints and need inspiration you could browse somewhere like desenio. You also have the option to choose a frame which fits the print so don't even need to think about buying that separately.

Getthefiregoing · 19/01/2023 13:55

If your kids gravitate towards that corner then make a feature out of it. Put a den or cosy beanbags there for them. A little book nook. Go on Pinterest for some ideas and tie the colour scheme of their little reading corner together with the rest of the living room.

pelargoniums · 19/01/2023 13:56

The biggest rug you can afford, and rearrange the sofas and side tables. An ottoman or coffee table in the middle. Move the TV. Art comes last I think – sort out the layout first! It’s all a bit empty but squished at the moment.

Get some canvases made from your favourite photos, not of the kids though as that's a bit tacky. A nice holiday photo. Get some large plants and a sideboard for teh left wall. A standard lamp tripod style would be nice too

The TV is watched. Just not from the sofa that's next to it . Apart from the cables needing tucking away I don't think it looks a mess . And there's no further/things around it because I have not decorated /added things yet. That's the whole point of the post.

Get a couple of good sized coffee tables (measure your wall first though) and put one at each end of the sofa.

On the coffee tables put table lamps.

Move the cupboard thing that's under the TV so that it's centred underneath.

Get a big rug that is level with the sofa - I'd go for one with wine red in it.

I'd get a big (landscape) picture for above the sofa.

VioletCharlotte · 19/01/2023 15:32

You need plants. Lots of plants! Either real of artificial, they make such a difference. IKEA have loads.

A big rug in the centre of the room.

Coffee table/ side table

Lamps

Radiator cover would look nice and can put things on it.

Housenoob · 19/01/2023 15:36

Big plants
Big rug
Cushions and throws
Accent chair
Wall art/framed photos up
Side tables or big coffee table
Bookshelf with books/nicnaks arranged nicely
Change the curtains

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 19/01/2023 15:36

I would move the ‘kids’ sofa further towards the door and put space behind it.

I’d put a bookshelf all along the wall behind the moved sofa. Lots of books, pictures etc on the shelves

I’d have the tv taken off the wall and put on the TV cabinet in front. I’d then put pictures (with Velcro strips) on that wall.

I’d move the sofa you are on further into the room.

I’d put a warm coloured rug down (possibly hot pink or raspberry coloured to tone with the curtains and cabinet)

I’d put a coffee table on the rug

I’d get a floor lamp and 2 tables lamps - one of those would be on the bookshelves and the other behind the sofa you’re sitting on

I’d change the ceiling light to tone with the rug / curtains and lower it

I’d have a small occasional table near the windows or use one of the other cabinets

I’d put radiator covers (you can buy flat pack ones) over the radiators and paint them navy

I’d buy lots of plants and have green, pink and navy cushions on the sofa (different shades, none of them actually matching)

The kids would not be allowed to ‘dominate’ the rooms layout. (I use dominate loosely but their den would need a new home). I’d get a couple of bean bags for them.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 19/01/2023 15:37

(Agree with changing the curtains too and if so, colours above would change with them!)

I only just bought the blue side table and coffee table. The 2nd side table is still in the box. So not going to replace them 😀

What time of day does the room get sunshine? Is it the sort of room where you can bask in the sun on your sofa?

wtqkapdj · 19/01/2023 15:44

I don't think the colour of the tables and the sofa go together. I wouldn't put them near each other.

As others have suggested lamps, rugs, pictures etc. I'd get something tall to sit under the TV, all the wires and plugs look untidy.

hopeishere · 19/01/2023 15:45

Can you take one from the far corner looking at the other wall?

I'd move the blue table to the corner and move the sofa up a a bit. Put a lamp on the table. Move the blue thing under the tv elsewhere. Is that the coffee table?

Cushions, big bright rug, plants.
