What can I do with my living room (pic)

I have made a start on my living room . I can't paint or wallpaper at the moment. I was thinking I could put something on the walls with command strips/simlar. Some sort of canvas /wall art. I don't know what though 😕.

I’m not sure anyone can give you advice on the art itself, as that’s a personal choice and it depends what you like and how you want this room to feel.

I agree with other posters that the sofa in your photo needs to be centred on that wall. A large standing lamp could then go on that corner, possibly clustered with a couple of large (but not as tall as the lamp) plants.
Assuming the back of the room is used for the kids area, the sofa you are sitting on should then be pulled right forward to create a square sitting/ TV area with the other sofa, coffee table in the middle, with a large square rug.

SeaweedGarters · 19/01/2023 15:48

Can you add a photo of the rest of the room, from another angle? It's difficult to visualise where the windows/doors/other sofa are. What direction does it face? What time of day do you use it most?

In general, as it is, it's bare and boxy and colourless. I think that the first thing it needs is some added softness and different shapes to make it seem less hard-edged and boxy -- a large rug, more flowy, voluminous curtains, cushions, plants. The side tables look like bedside lockers to me...?

AnekeSchuss · 19/01/2023 15:50

was going to say the same as PP - move the end table to the corner and the sofa moves up toward the socket and door

i would bring the second sofa into the middle of the room toward the tv creating a space behind it as you walk into the room where you might have shelves or a side table

then add coffee table and bean bags in front of the tv and sofas

plus plants rug and pics. Agree that blue and black colour matching isn’t ideal but you could pull it all together with some lighter colour soft furnishings

The unit under the tv needs to line up with the tv.

Waitingforcoffee · 19/01/2023 15:57

Large area rug

A couple of large prints will look better than smaller ones. You can get A1 posters and put them in matching frames. I'd probably go for black frames to tie in with your sofa.

The TV looks too high on the wall for easy viewing. so I'd lower that a bit and get a bigger storage underneath it.

I wouldn't do plants - I quite like the minimalism of your room and I think plants can sometimes look messy.

The sofa to the side looks a bit oddly positioned, but as you say, there's another part of the room we can't see. If the sofa stays there, it at least needs a large area rug in front of it to soften the floor. Don't get a tiny little 6'x4' rug to sit primly (and pointlessly) in front of the sofa, a bigger one would look far better.

hatonacat · 19/01/2023 16:00

The colour of the tables and the sofa don’t go together at all. You could have a round basket in the floor with blankets in. The tv looks like it’s very high up..? Maybe fairy lights of some sort, a big rug and big plants. More smaller lights to make it cosy. Don’t squash everything against the wall, the room needs more life.

Waitingforcoffee · 19/01/2023 16:00

Oh and can just see that the sofa is pushed up against the wall. I'd move it so it was centrally positioned along that wall. Usually sofas face the TV but as you've said, you have another sofa that we can't see so that one can stay where it is (rather than in front of the TV) but I would definitely move it back along from the TV wall.

Flameshame · 19/01/2023 16:03

You need a big green plant in the back left corner. A big colourful rug. A colourful lampshade. Candles and various other cheap ornaments. Cushions. Throws. Make it cosy and filled

hatonacat · 19/01/2023 16:05

Is the tv not in the middle of the wall? That plus that the unit is not positioned under the tv would give me ocd. 😅 Nothing is symmetric, it all looks like it is in the wrong place. But the room itself is big and lovely. Just move furniture around and try different things!

hatonacat · 19/01/2023 16:08

Oh I see now there is a radiator, that’s why the tv isn’t centered.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 19/01/2023 16:08

I thought that about the TV positioning @hatonacat. It why I suggest taking it off the wall (that and I really dislike TVs on walls without a bookcase surrounding them).

larchforest · 19/01/2023 16:10

You can get shelves which fit onto the top of radiators, so that might be useful. A bushy pot plant strategically placed on the table under the tv would help hide the wiring. Other than that, maybe a brightly coloured rug and co-ordinating cushions. B&M is your friend here, they have loads of reasonably-priced furnishings. I think they also sell pictures.

If you move the sofa along a bit and put the other side table in the corner, you can move the table so it is under the tv rather than being off-centre.

TheOtherBoleynGirls · 19/01/2023 16:12

I’d move that sofa more central against the wall and put a big plant in the corner. Then a big colourful rug with a coffee table on it in the centre. For art, chose a colourful print that matches the rug and you can always just put it in a cheaper frameless picture frame at least.

Yes it needs something surrounding it or taken off the wall and lowered. It looks so cold with just a tv.

Unforgettablefire · 19/01/2023 16:18

I'd pull the settee further up the wall, and if you're keeping the little chest at the side put a plant on and a tall plant at the other side.
Huge colourful rug, matching curtains with maybe the wall behind the curtains matching the rug.
It's a lovely size room enjoy it!

Catspyjamas17 · 19/01/2023 16:19

Even without painting it you could introduce colour and chairs with soft furnishings, paintings, furniture and rugs. Perhaps a standard lamp & table lamp for some softer lighting. Think about texture as well- perhaps some wooly/fluffy/furry cushions. Looks like a great room, it's a blank canvas just now.

Unforgettablefire · 19/01/2023 16:19

Ps. I think the lampshade might be a bit small for that room.

Topbird29 · 19/01/2023 16:21

As others have said, need to add some softness and colour to the room. Would move sofa by tv further towards the door/other end of room. Big plant in that corner by tv / sofa end. Move cabinet so directly under tv. Big rug. Maybe a throw for sofa to add another colour. Burnt orange or aqua might compliment the tables. Got a big rug from Dunhelm online for a good price- about £125 - does depend on what your budget is though.
Re artwork- once bought a big plain canvas from the works and just painted splodgey areas of colour on it. Looked OK as an abstract. Maybe you could try that if you can't find anything. That could go on wall behind the sofa.

hatonacat · 19/01/2023 16:22

Yes, a much bigger light. And lots of small ones to make it cosy. And different colour curtains, maybe to match the new big rug. The floor is lovely!

Rickandmortified100 · 19/01/2023 16:23

The sofa is very bare and doesn’t ‘go’ with the rest of the room, I think. It looks quite harsh. Can you soften it up with maybe a throw and a couple of cushions to add some homeliness and colour?

I would definitely lower the TV and hide the wires. It’s way too high up and looks a bit odd. Make sure the cupboard is centrally underneath the TV and not off to one side like it is now.

Move the sofa, like PPs have said. Move it away from the TV wall, more on the wall it’s up against, and put the side tables either side. Put table lamps on the side tables.

Put a rug on the floor. Put maybe a plant in the corner of the room?

Catspyjamas17 · 19/01/2023 16:24

What's the budget? It looks mainly like it just needs more stuff in it.

This rug is cheap and would go with the blueish shades you have in there and add some warmth.

For prints that come with frames try Desenio I’m the same in that if there is no frame I just can’t be assed having to source my own frame!

Aquamarine1029 · 19/01/2023 16:26

Why is the couch you're on so far away from the TV? It needs to be much closer. The black couch needs to be moved into the center of the wall. It looks really weird crammed into the corner. Tack up the cables to the back of the TV, they look a mess. I would also get a console table, bookcase, or something to put under the TV. It looks like it's just floating in space.

You need to move the sofas closer together in a square so that you could have a conversation with people who came to visit. Coffee table in middle on a rug. You need to sort out the off centre TV and TV stand situation. Create a kids corner with book shelves, toy boxes and a beanbag. Radiator cover? You could then put plants on top of it.

For art or mirrors, they need to be big. A trip to ikea could get you all of that.

Focus on making it seem homely and cosy, not 'matchy'. It seems very lacking in personal items?
