What can I do with my living room (pic)

I have made a start on my living room . I can't paint or wallpaper at the moment. I was thinking I could put something on the walls with command strips/simlar. Some sort of canvas /wall art. I don't know what though 😕.

Couple of big canvas prints would add some colour and interest.

Ikea do curated prints and frames. Whole set costs £45

Add in some cushions, throws, rug and plant.

What's the budget? It looks mainly like it just needs more stuff in it.

This rug is cheap and would go with the blueish shades you have in there and add some warmth.

That rug would go well with the colour of the floor too.

I agree with the suggestions regarding repositioning of sofas, side tables, getting a rug and a big coffee table, large table lamps.

A large plant in the left hand corner would loook great.

The room needs a big, abstract painting. You can create your own with a cheap canvas and a set of acrylics - try Hobbycraft. Good thing with acrylics is that they dry fast, but you can always paint over them if you're not satisfied. This lady has a lot of inspirations using simple techniques:

Anoooshka · 19/01/2023 16:46

What's your budget?

Is that a brown rug in the corner of the photo? What colour is your other sofa? Is it the same as the one in the photo?

I'd google "light brown and blue rooms" and have a look at those. You need an accent colour. Green would be nice. Then you could add a plant or two and some green/blue pictures and cushions. The IKEA frames and prints shown in a previous post would look really nice.

PureBlackVoid · 19/01/2023 16:46

I think you need to add some more ‘main’ bits to the room/layout before picking or positioning any prints on the wall.

I would move the sofa you’re sat on closer to the sitting area so it’s in an L shape (assuming it will fit comfortably that way). Coffee table in the middle, with a large area rug. Then a narrow console/sideboard up against the back of the moved sofa, a bit like in this pic.

Wood floating shelf under the TV, match the wood tone of the top of the coffee and side table you have now.

Obviously can’t see the space where you’re sat now but if it can fit, a nice large sideboard and the ‘kid corner’ somewhere on that side (assuming there is enough space if you can currently fit a sofa there now). Big mirror above this side board.

Once you have that main lay out in place, you can add some height on the side boards/console tables, tall plants, lamps etc then it will be easier to see what kind of wall art will suit and where.

The room is lacking a focal point. Is there a fireplace?

Catspyjamas17 · 19/01/2023 16:52

That open sideboard is great, @PureBlackVoid.

I'm also a big fan of ladder type shelf units. I've got one with a mixture of books and ornaments on.

It's this one, or something very similar.

do you have a dining table? Or is the only place in the front room that one can go?
could you push the sofa your on forward and bring the other one closer to where the plug socket is by the door? Put a tall lamp in the corner? Then put a dining table where the sofa you’re sitting on is? Have a rug in front of the sofas? So it sort of has a cosy lounge space with a dining table behind it? If that makes sense!

DilemmaDelilah · 19/01/2023 17:18

I would find one thing that you love. It could be a picture, a rug or a cushion for instance. Chose a colour or colours from that for any other accessories. I assume that you are in rented accommodation so you can't do much with the room itself, but you could replace the curtains, get a big rug, cushions, throws, beanbags, whatever is in your budget. It does look a bit cold and bleak at the moment but a little bit of colour and some sort furnishings will help with that. You could probably do with some storage for the toys - your room looks very neat at the moment but I'm sure the children have things around the place usually. Maybe you could put that between the end wall and the sofa so that it is where they play and it means that the sofa could be brought out from the wall a little bit? We have a plug in electric fire in a mantelpiece surround under our television. It doesn't need to be installed and even if you don't need it for heat it gives the impression of a cosy fireplace and provides a bit of a focal point.

DilemmaDelilah · 19/01/2023 17:22

Also definitely some additional lighting. A couple of lamps on your side tables perhaps, they would help to make the room look cosier.

Mynewhome · 19/01/2023 17:25

Thank you everyone. Just wanted to add a few things which I probably should have put in my op.

Few people are saying the blue furniture does not go. I bought it less that a week ago and I can't replace it actually everything apart from the sofas I have bought in the last week or 2.

The sofas are against the walls because I like alot of room space. And space for the kids to play. And against the corners because they end up putting all sets of crap down the corners . 2 of my kids have special needs so I want it as easy as possible to clean

I just want to add things to the walls ect to set things of a bit.

People have asked about the other side of the room. I can't take a pic as to many people in my room just now . But there is a video in my other posts the living room is probably about 30 seconds or so in. So welcome to look there if you want to .

Where are all the toys?

PutThatDownNow · 19/01/2023 17:27

I understand the problem of the kids filling up the gap if the sofa is moved. But could you use something else to fill the gap? Eg side table, beanbags? They wouldn't be very visible to the rest of the room but would avoid the tempting gap.

Aside from that I agree about moving the sofa along the wall and adding some softness through cushions and rugs. I like the colour of the side tables and think you can work with what you have got by adding in some softness.

AgathaX · 19/01/2023 17:37

It just needs some stuff to soften the look of it. A rug, a couple of throws over the sofas and some cushions. Maybe a large plant or two. If it's a rental and you can't put things on the walls, could you put some nice posters up with blu-tack? If you pull the soft furnishings together with a colour theme it'll help the room come together. I'd maybe go with either a bright colour like burnt orange or a deep red, or a neutral such as cream or beige.

AnotherAppleThief · 19/01/2023 17:45

I don't really understand what you're asking, you've said no to dozens of ideas and have your reasons for keeping it exactly as it is?

I have not said no I have only said why I don't want to move the sofas for now . And why I can't replace furniture that I just bought. That does not mean I have said no to adding things or dressing it up

OP posts:
NoDairyNoProblem · 19/01/2023 18:41

Ok if you don’t want to move the sofas it will be harder to make the room feel warmer.

I would pull the side table nearer the door and pull the sofa up next to it - put a large potted plant in the corner to add colour.

A large rug, cushions and throws in a mix of colours and textures would soften the sofas and help blend them with your new furniture.

A mix of artwork/large mirror.

Lamps, a vase or potted plant on the side tables too.

Twillow · 19/01/2023 18:51

Lovely big space.
Put some plants or baskets on the unit under the tv to hide the plugs and wires.
Rug.
Beanbag in front of the radiator.
I personally would move the sofa along that wall so that the small unit is near the door and have a taller unit on the other end of the run, kallax type, with the pull-out baskets for blankets and kids toys.
The Range have lots of cheap framed artwork and canvases. Or rather than a couple of big ones, a collection of smaller ones in a theme/colour scheme.

PutThatDownNow · 19/01/2023 19:17

I remember your previous post about your new home and have looked again at your video. The living room is a lovely bright space. Having looked at the video I think the placement of the second sofa (that you were sitting on to take the pic) is fine. I still suggest finding a way to move the one by the TV along a bit and filling the gap with something else. But aside from that some bits to soften. It is a lovely room.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 19/01/2023 19:21

Regardless of how you do it up OP, I hope you’re very happy in it (I’ve read your other posts).

Divebar2021 · 19/01/2023 20:31

Hey OP! decorating a house doesn’t happen overnight. You might start a Pinterest board with ideas that you like and see if a theme emerges. I’ve bought a lot of items for our house secondhand from eBay or FB marketplace. Rugs, silk curtains, bedside cabinets and endless other things. Wooden items can be painted easily enough if you want to change up the colours. I’m sure you’re going to have a lot of fun in your new place

Apollonia1 · 19/01/2023 23:50

I'd take the TV off the wall and put it on a table in the corner beside the window doors.
