We have DSs friend with us for a sleepover. It's unplanned because of a sudden family bereavement

I knew he was gluten free which is fine.. but now I've discovered he's also vegan.

I was going to do gluten free fish fingers, potato wedges and beans but obviously no good and I'm tired at at a loss as to what to replace fish fingers with.

I'm sure it's obvious.. but.. help? Please..

Vegetarian chilli and rice?

Idontmeanto · 18/01/2023 16:32

Just have a hunt in the frozen section of the supermarket! There Will be a not-really chicken dippers or equivalent. Or a vegan cheese and gluten free tomato pasta dish?!

WileECoyoteMeepMeep · 18/01/2023 16:34

Oh gosh, in this sort emergency situation (if you don’t want to battle round the shops) I’d probably just do jacket potato and baked beans. A quick Google tells me Heinz are both vegan and GF.

If you have things like chickpeas, tinned tomatoes and the sort of spices to make a curry in your pantry, that could be an option.

Ask him. He is 10. He should know what he eats. Take him to the supermarket if needed.

Clarabellawilliamson · 18/01/2023 16:35

Jacket potato and beans- I know there are more interesting meals out there, but it's pretty kid friendly!

Yeah this it will save any faff. Or just ask him what he likes ?

CMOTDibbler · 18/01/2023 16:37

A jacket pot and beans sounds perfect for dinner. I'd be more worried about the morning - what was the breakfast plan?

Devineursula · 18/01/2023 16:37

Drop his parents a line asking for his favourite food

PinkPantherPaws · 18/01/2023 16:37

I'd do a bean chilli and rice...chilli con carne using any recipe, all the same spices etc, just use any beans (kidney, butter, rinsed baked beans) or chickpeas instead of mince.

Devineursula · 18/01/2023 16:38

I always do that before any of my children’s friends over. Also gives parent an opp to tell me if their child particularly hates something

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 18/01/2023 16:38

Short of finding some GF, vegan sausages (I think Quotn do some though), pad out the beans and wedges with big grilled mushrooms, caramelised onions. Sweetcorn fritters made with gf/corn/chickpea flour?

Some kind of homepage GF, vegan sausage made by mashing chickpeas AB's adding spices and veg. I'd usually bind it with an egg though!

Quartz2208 · 18/01/2023 16:42

AS a parent of a vegan there are plenty of plant based alternatives around including pizza and fish fingers. The local Sainsburys often stock then as well.

There are also gluten free pastas readily available as well.

But I would say the easiest is just to grab some plant based sausages (most veggie ones are) and check they are gluten and served with the wedges and beans and grab some plant based milk for the morning.

enjoyingscience · 18/01/2023 16:43

Keep it simple - wedges and beans as planned, mushroom grilled or baked or corn on the cob as above.

just be careful not to use butter on anything.

pocketvenuss · 18/01/2023 16:44

Be aware most vegan sausages/pies etc have gluten. It seems near impossible to make something meat free without using gluten

AdaColeman · 18/01/2023 16:47

It's an emergency! So wedges or baked potato and beans will be fine.

SoupDragon · 18/01/2023 16:47

There's a pizza that is vegan and GF (available in my medium sized sainsburys, has "rabbit' in the name)

SoupDragon · 18/01/2023 16:48

I do agree that wedges and beans is fine as a one off emergency meal. Also, ask him.

listsandbudgets · 18/01/2023 16:49

Thanks all. It does seem obvious really, I was just completely thrown by vegan on top of gluten free

@Idontmeanto has jist reminded me I've got most of a bag of gluten free pasta from past time he was here. Plenty of tomatoes and onions and garlic take saice

Our local co-op is rubbish for anything as specific as vegan cheese but dd called on way home from school and says she has to pass near the health food shop so will get something from there. @CMOTDibbler thank you for your post she's going toget some gluten free granola and soya milk as well ( how I love having a 17 year old daughter she's amazing)

Is he coeliac? If so, be aware that one crumb of toast/a trace of gluten on a washed oven tray can make him ill, even if it looks clean. Might be worth getting some disposable foil trays to be safe.

I'd also check the wedges unless you've made them yourself as they (and frozen chips) often have wheat flour on them to make them go crispy.

How about omelette and wedges?

MaverickGooseGoose · 18/01/2023 16:52

I'd just take him to the shop and see what he fancies, might give him a sense of normalcy but otherwise, yes jacket and beans with vegan cheese plastic.

Rice noodle stir fry
Chickpea or veg curry and rice
Bean chilli and rice
Hummus and veg sticks

Omelette isn't vegan!

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 18/01/2023 16:53

Sorry, I thought you said vegetarian! Whoops!

I realised he's vegan as I hit post - I remembered the vegetarian chilli suggestion and got confused Blush

kitsuneghost · 18/01/2023 16:55

chickpea curry
Mediterranean aubergine stew
mushroom risotto
sweet potato tray bake

Not for today but should you need to feed this child again BBC good food has a section.
