We have DSs friend with us for a sleepover. It's unplanned because of a sudden family bereavement

I knew he was gluten free which is fine.. but now I've discovered he's also vegan.

I was going to do gluten free fish fingers, potato wedges and beans but obviously no good and I'm tired at at a loss as to what to replace fish fingers with.

I'm sure it's obvious.. but.. help? Please..

Just pop to local shop and get some gluten free pasta if he enjoyed last time. Job done.

Devineursula · 18/01/2023 18:00

So if he enjoyed the gluten free pasta last time… why not just rinse and repeat?

Quorn is vegan and gluten-free and tastes good too.

You can now buy gluten free vegan pizzas!

Probably too late for tonight but helpful for the future!

TeapotTitties · 18/01/2023 18:31

See I would've just asked him or texted his parents 👀

So I’m baffled

you don’t seem to have any options at home. So that is why I was suggesting work with the pasta before if you’re going to have to pop to shop

so what are you doing?

Not always. There is a vegan and no vegan range. It is only vegan if it says in very large letters on it.

Also be careful with shop bought sauces - look for milk in bold a surprising number do! Although he may just eat it and not check (unlike my daughter) and things are also often vegan but just say vegetarian!

And I would not bother with vegan cheese - doesnt add much to pasta.

Very strange that on a thread about a bereaved child and a woman trying to care for him as best she can, they're are people arguing and picking her apart??

Hope you found something suitable OP and if he's stays longer you've found the suggestions here helpful.

A 10 year old lad’s parents allows him to become vegan when he’s already dietary restricted. Unbelievable

Lots of coeliacs are also lactose intolerant so this might be a factor.

Thornrose · 18/01/2023 19:21

Just what I was thinking! Trying to trip her up and questioning her. Some people just can't take a break from being an arsehole...

I have seen meat and dairy eaters with a less varied an unhealthier diet than some vegans I know.

Haveagentlechristmas · 19/01/2023 14:20

Butternut squash soup homemade with some gluten free bread and vegan spread? Be careful no gluten in stock cube....

Buddha bowl, instant rice, avacado, some chopped salad and some kind of black bean or other pulse for protien

Dhal and rice

Jacket potatoe and beans (change butter for fair free margarine).

Cereal with oatmil in the morning?

It's a tough one! Jacket pots and beans may be your best bet!

katmarie · 19/01/2023 14:41

OP, no suggestions for food, other posters have that covered, but I just wanted to say you sound very kind, and I'm sure your son's friend is grateful, he's lucky to have you.

Ameanstreakamilewide · 19/01/2023 15:02

You are patient in the extreme, OP.

GF is fair enough, but a 10 year old vegan would genuinely irritate me.

A lot of Quorn contains egg. Some Quorn is vegan and GF but a lot is not

Meatless farm products and shroomdogs are GF and vegan

Yep - those of us with dietary restriction should not be allowed any further control over our food!

@Devineursula its actually very easy to have a nutritious GF and vegan diet.

as this thread shows what is tricky, is finding easy, processed freezer food.
I guess it depends what type of food you prefer to cook 🤷‍♀️

gogohmm · 19/01/2023 15:16

Some of the Linda McCartney sausages are gf including the red onion and rosemary ones

gogohmm · 19/01/2023 15:19

In the future though I would stick to chilli or curry and rice. So easy to make vegan and gf, the non vegans can add sour cream or yogurt if they want

Oh bore off. A person can be deficient in vitamins etc. on any diet. What matters is how much attention caregivers pay to feeding their child well and paying attention to their health. It’s too easy and judgy to assume a vegan child is being deprived and malnourished. Maybe the kid wants to be vegan and gets upset at animals being killed for meat etc. Why assume it’s something being forced on him?

What a nasty thing to say about a 10 year old child suffering a bereavement

You must baffle easy. Anyone with half a brain can glean from OPs posts she is making him the GF pasta and a tomato sauce from home, her daughter is picking up vegan cheese and other GF things for him to have tomorrow.
A shocking example of a failing education system or just being a nob?

Ameanstreakamilewide · 19/01/2023 16:54

@AppaTheSixLeggedFlyingBison

What's the bereavement got to do with it?
If the boy was just visiting for a play date, it would still be a pain in the arse.
